For those that are curious about why the 1999 version of Luffy’s backstory is different to the 2021 version. The 1999 version made small changes to how scenes played making them different from the manga. Then in 2021 when they had to reanimate those scenes they decided to make them more manga accurate Now in my opinion the changes the 1999 version made did work better animation wise, making funny scenes funnier and serious scenes more dramatic. A scene may work well as a comic panel but the beats won’t be exactly the same when animated. The changes the 1999 version made didn’t alter the story just made it so that scenes landed better when animated. Unfortunately the changes to the 2021 version also meant the dialogue and lip flaps were different, so the dub team was forced to alter their translation as well though they tried to keep it similar to the 1999 translation
