This is the very first arc where it's not the strawhats that arrive to defeat the big bad. But the bad arrive to defeat the big Strawhats. For the first time, the roles in an arc are switched. And that will be the standard from now on.

I don't know if anyone else noticed the same thing in this fight, but it was literally a fight of male egos, kind of like a kids fight. In Water 7 they showed Lucci as a calculating and sadistic guy who only follows orders, but Luffy despite beating him by very little, humiliated him in W7 and Lucci this time even though he knew he shouldn't fight Luffy and that it was an order, he didn't hold back, because he wanted to basically measure himself against him, check if he was really at Yonkou's level and above all, he wanted revenge for his wounded ego. For Luffy it's the same, Lucci was one of his biggest obstacles at the beginning and he couldn't resist to measure himself with him, in conclusion, both were, irresponsible, childish and impulsive, that's why Stussy said "Men are so stupid", they made a mess just for wanting to measure themselves, Lucci being several years older than Luffy behaving like a teenager, that's what Luffy did to his ego.

I'll dissent here, Lucci had a facade of being cold and calculating, but the sadism really is the point. Lucci only works for the government because it gives him a legal outlet to murder people. He's literally a government employed serial killer. Luffy is both a challenge and a target that got away. Of course there is plenty of ego there, but Lucci was always a hyperviolent smoke demon who loves beating people to death.

I hate everyone who supports the protag and underestimates the villain. Sometimes it feels like these reactors just support the fan fav characters so that they wont anger the fans. Protags have plot armour especially shonen protags.They aren't worth supporting. Villains are fated to lose. So I feel bad for them and kinda want to support them everytime I can.
