Say what you will, but if any One Piece antagonist has the credentials to be a protagonist it's probably Kaido. The dude isn't a good guy, but he has gone through a lot being used by the Vodka Kingdom to destroy enemy armies and being used as a political tool by trying to give him to the Marines to become one so they would have a seat at the Reverie. Kaido trying to kill himself multiple times with failure. Kaido likely literally enslaving Wano just to spawn Joyboy to come there and fulfill a prophecy as Kaido told King "Joyboy would be the one to defeat him." And Joyboy being the savior that he's waiting for which is Luffy who will go on to abolish the Celestial Dragons and their rule over the world.
