For example, in the Making of *"From Russia With Love"* Documentary; Peter Hunt talked about how Terence Young visited the editing room one day and asked him if he could see what they did so far. So he showed him the scene where Q taught Bond how to safely open his suitcase, and when he did, it suddenly cuts to an explosion (Crab Key blowing up) and then end credits rolled. I remember the first time I saw that film, that dish blew my mind. I had NO IDEA it was a real location. I was so into the story, in the back of my head, I thought, "HOW MUCH did they spend to build this set?" Meanwhile, I also had NO IDEA what Derek Meddings did on the film. The shot of the dish coming up out of the water, of course, was a MINIATURE. But I had NO CLUE! Some of Medding's best work was when you COULDN'T TELL he worked on the film at all. Another example was the deserted warehouse the helicopter flew into in the pre-credit sequence of "FOR YOUR EYES ONLY". Inside the warehouse, the copter was not really flying-- it moved on a track. But outside-- it never did fly into the building. Meddings built a miniature of the building, shot very close to the camera, with the camera focus at the widest distance, so everything was in the SAME focus. The REAL copter flew behind the tiny model. But it looked like it actually flew INTO a building. The irony of this hit me sometime later, when I saw "SHAFT'S BIG SCORE" (1972). That film actually did have a real helicopter flying inside a real warehouse. 9 years before "FYEO" faked it!

I don't know if you'd put this as a fact about YOLT or OHMSS but the latter was supposed to be made first which would've been the correct chronological order. Problem was that it was unseasonably warm in Switzerland during the winter of 1966-67 so the producers decided to make YOLT first which screwed up the chronology. Had YOLT been a direct sequel to OHMSS like in the books I wonder how different the movies would've been. They certainly wouldn't have just glossed over Tracy's death the way they did in DAF. Not only that but DAF would most likely have been a more faithful adaptation and Blofeld wouldn't have been involved at all. One of the great What Ifs of James Bond. Great video! Keep these "one in every Bond movie" videos coming!
@henrykujawa44272 жыл бұрын
Strangely, I have heard MULTIPLE conflicting stories of "why" "YOLT" was made before "OHMSS". This includes someone saying they felt "OHMSS" was "THUNDERBALL on skis", and their being unable to find a proper location for the "fort" in the book. One thing I do know-- while "Piz Gloria" was not exactly the building described in the novel, its location, its look, the fact that it had a TOBOGGAN RUN as part of it, all made it arguably the best Bond location EVER. And it was being built when they found it! The owners agreed to let the film use it in exchange for them furnishing the place, AND, building a permanent heli-pad. For the sake of that location... "IF ONLY" they waited 4 years after "THUNDERBALL". There's also those who have insisted "YOLT" was "unfilmable". See the Kurt Russell film "STARGATE" where his character has virtually the same "character arc" as Bond did in the novel-- a man on the verge of suicide because of the murder of his wife, who goes on a suicide mission and finds out he has a chance to kill the one responsible for the earlier murder. Imagine Connery with a script like THAT!
@spencerkindra88222 жыл бұрын
@@henrykujawa4427 "Thunderball on skis" wow I've never heard that anecdote before. That's a dumb thing to say since Thunderball and OHMSS are pretty different books in terms of the action. And yeah I agree, Connery in a more faithful adaptation of You Only Live Twice is definitely a cool idea. YOLT is my favorite Bond movie and I can see Connery giving a good performance as a suicidal alcoholic Bond. Only thing is in this alternate timeline, does Connery make OHMSS? If so then he's probably phoning it in in YOLT since that would've been his seventh movie so he'd have maybe been even more over it than he was in Diamonds Are Forever.
@RomanShopa2 жыл бұрын
@@henrykujawa4427 having never read YOLT, this description is a discovery for me. Arguably, only few films feature Bond experiencing mental issues and almost none develops it into a distinct story. For instance, I consider Vesper's arc the only valuable thing in QoS and a fail at the same time, having not been elaborated to a proper level. You know what gets me... ALLEGEDLY, Mie Hama was supposed to play Aki, but her English wasn't good enough, and she threatened suicide when she heard they wanted to replace her. But, this story doesn't make sense to me, because of HOW MANY ACTORS in the films got dubbed! (Ursula Andress, Gert Frobe, Adolph Celi, Tetsuru Tamba, Gabrielle Ferzetti) They decided to swap her with Akiko Wakabayashi, because "Kissy" had SO LITTLE screen time. Which, by the way, I CANNOT consider "Kissy" the main girl in that movie. "Aki" was in 3/4ths of the movie, was a wonderfully developed character, and did NOT deserve to be killed off so cold-bloodedly. It only happened because the producers stupidly told fill-in writer Roald Dahl to have 2 girls, and kill the first one off midway in. The more I watch the film, the more, as a writer, I resent this happening. Mie Hama was dubbed in "KING KONG ESCAPES", and I don't think anybody was bothered by it.

At the end of "WRONG IS RIGHT"-- my very favorite Sean Connery movie-- just before he jumps out of the plane with his TV camera, Connery yanks off his toupee. (In the 1977 DC comic-book, "Secret Society of Super-Villains #7", con-man villain "Funky Flashman" does the same thing at the end of the comic. A year later, Gene Hackman did this at the end of "SUPERMAN". Ever since I saw the comic, I've been convinced the film-makers got the two bad guys CONFUSED, since Lex Luthor-- the real one-- is also in that comic. In effect, Gene Hackman was REALLY playing "Funky Flashman" in the movies. If they had really wanted to do "Lex Luthor" properly, they should have cast TELLY SAVALAS... who happens to be my favorite Bond movie villain.) I've always liked the idea (never confirmed) that General Gogol was a former member of SPECTRE, who went back to Russia after the 2nd Bond film (heh). The scene with the girl in Cuba is "NO TIME TO DIE" was so good, it really deserved to be in a completely-different and far-better Bond movie.

Well there’s a reason Ana only had three weeks training. They realized they needed a pretty girl to show alongside Bond in the trailers, because “the same girl who was in Spectre - the one you all thought was meh.” doesn’t sell tickets.

@Greg Elchert I remember a lot of people saying that Connery looked younger in "NSNA" than he did in "DIAMONDS". Just had a thought. Henry Silva might have made a good Bond villain! I think the sickest, nastiest role I ever saw him play was the hit man in "SHARKEY'S MACHINE", a movie with a lot of likable characters where the story was just WAY too nasty and viscious for its own good.

The ass-kicking niece that you reference in "Man with the Golden Gun" is Yuen Qiu, a HK actress. Being that she is HK Chinese, how exactly would she be "the real-life daughter of the head of the Japanese Secret Service?" Citation needed.
@DutchBondFan2 жыл бұрын
Found it on a trivia website, the citation was: Trivia: "One of the two schoolgirls (the one with the shorter hair) who help Bond beat-up the bad guys at the karate school, was the real-life daughter of the head of the Japanese secret service at the time." - I never knew about this myself so thought it would be an interesting addition, not knowing she's actually Chinese. Who knows!

He was just a really good Japanese spy. Joking. My daughter is a different nationality than I am. Although it’s more likely the facts are wrong.

Fun Fact: In a deleted scene, featured only in the workprint of *"The Living Daylights",* Admiral Hargraves/"M" reveals to General Gogol that Kamran Shah is now the new Afghan foreign minister and after Kara went to her dressing room, Gogol tells Kamran that now they can be friends.

Probably just a piece of studio "hype," but the Rank Organization put out a press release that two of their young stars, LOIS MAXWELL and CHRISTOPHER LEE were engaged to be married.
@henrykujawa44272 жыл бұрын
I just learned the other week that Christopher Lee's very 1st movie in the early 50s featured Lois Maxwell and was directed by Terence Young. The more I learn about Lee, the more I wish he'd been cast as BOND, back in the 1950s.

LIke the best Bond that never was (Lewis Collins) George Lazenby were the closest to Fleming's Bond character. Both Lazenby and Collins passed the rigorous SAS training. Both were members of the most elite service regiments (SAS) in Australia and United Kingdom. George taught unarmed combat. When George audtioned for the Bond role he bought a rolex watch that was the same as those used in the films, and wore a suit that was tailored for Sean Connery Lewis joined the Army after appearing in the TV series The Professionals. After his passing out parade he was told he was too famous to be a SAS soldier. When Lewis auditioned for the role Cubby Boccoli thought he was "too aggressive". The obviously Cubby wanted a Bond who was in touch with his feminine side. Lewis's role in Who Dares Win illustrates what a great Bond he would have been.

As a Puertorrican I'm sadly to say that the Arecibo Observatory from Goldeneye no longer exists. They couldn't get the funds for the maintenance and the antenna fell. But I read recently that NASA is planning on rebuilding it.

On Thunderball. It wasn't a mafia job. The 18 "operational" member of SPECTRE included three mafia members and three Corsican union members. All had left their own organisations to become members of SPECTRE.

In Norway the translation of Max Zorin's line is correct. Of course it's possible the translators made a mistake in the cinema version and corrected it for the VHS/DVD release.

Howard Weber says > When I lived in Los Angeles , there was a Bond convention in 1994. On one of the days , they had a Stump the Panel - Bond trivia contest. On the panel was Graham Rye and 4 others. Well , I`m proud to say I was the only one that stumped the panel. Now remember , this was in 1994. Here`s the question I asked > " Not including the 1967 Casino Royale film , name everyone that has appeared in a Bond movie that has an Oscar ". They named them all except one. They forgot about John Barry`s appearance at the end of The Living Daylights. He has an Oscar. Remember , I didn`t say name every " actor ". What I said was name " everyone " that has appeared in a Bond movie that has an Oscar. I got a nice applause from the audience.
