I think the reason Aokiji is so invested in Robin's life is because his belief in justice, and the justice of the Marines and the World Government, died the day Ohara did. His dear friend died at his own hands protecting Robin, and the world government put a bounty on an 8 year old girl whose whole world had just been destroyed. A whole island of innocents were wiped out. Not a single thing that happened that day had anything to do with justice. And he went along with all of it. I think letting Robin get away that day is the only reason he's able to live with himself, and also why he's followed her life all these years.

Regarding Aokiji: I think his obsession with Robin really just boils down to what happened on Ohara. He saw his friend Saul, a deserter, and decided that he would put duty over friendship by executing him. At the same time he sees a fellow vice admiral blow up a ship full of innocent civilians in the name of "justice". Aokiji was visibly shaken by this, and later thinks to himself that the pursuit of absolute justice is madness (or something like that). So on the one hand we have Saul, a close friend of Aokiji who breaks the law in the name of justice and gives his life to save a little girl, and on the other we have the navy as a whole, which decided to destroy an entire island and a ship full of civilians in the name of justice. Those definitions of justice seem to be mutually exclusive. At the end of the Ohara flashback you can see Aokiji struggling to come to terms with this, and it seems like he is still trying to come to terms with it in the present. I honestly think Robin is just caught up in the middle of his existential crisis and guilt. She's a symbol of both Saul's and the Navy's ideals. Aokiji has been watching her because his friend died to save a girl the Navy was trying to kill, and he is trying to figure out which brand of "justice" makes sense.

Robin is the litmus test for whether absolute justice makes sense or not. If she is the 'devil child' that the government paints her as and truly brings about evil in the world, then absolute justice will have been proven right and necessary. But IF she brings about positive change and shows herself worthy of saul's sacrifice (spoiler, this is going to be the way it ends), then absolute justice is shown to be deeply flawed and wrong.

For Merphy, 3 things: 1 - please don't read the comments youself, or just read the ones more liked, that probably are spoiler-free. the plot is approaching amazing stuff, so we are hyping up for you and sometimes info slips in 2 - you theorizing it's amazing, I love it 3 - Garp is really proud of Luffy, even if he had different plans for him and they are on opposite sides. sure I wouldn't let Garp babysit anyone, but probably he was harsh with Luffy not because he was projecting to him his expectations, but because he wanted to avoid losing control of his grandson like he did with his son. I believe Garp believes to have been too soft with Dragon and now he's son is the most wanted man in the world, so Garp changed approach with the next generation to avoid repeating something like that. Maybe if Dragon did something else in his life (I don't know, the carpenter, the mailman, anything), Garp wouldn't care that much about Luffy's life choices. I don't think Aokiji necessarily was protecting Robin, I think it was more along the lines of observing, seeing what she did with the life Aokiji's friend Saul gave her. Eventually after 20 years of her running around without direction, jumping from group to group as a "ticking time bomb" as Aokiji put it in the translation I read, he decided she was better off dead like the rest of Ohara, that is until she found a place to genuinely settle down. I do think depending on the translation that exchange can vary significantly because it's pretty subtle. I think it's really interesting to put One Piece characters on D&D alignment charts, I'd say Aokiji is between a Lawful Good and a Lawful Neutral, while Luffy is between a Chaotic Good and a Chaotic Neutral. Also I found the narration after the Ace and Blackbeard fight to be very exciting and foreboding the first time I read it.

So we've got to the point where One Piece Friday is the first thing that goes in my weekly planner! There's a point coming up before too long that I think is perfect to stop for a re-read, I won't say when because spoilers, but that's when I stopped and went back to the beginning. One Piece re-reads are great, you pick out new details every time and take something new away from scenes you might've skipped over before. Plus, even though there's over a thousand chapters out now, it's never enough!

Here's my interpretation of Aokiji and Robin relationship. At Ohara, he absolutely would have killed her because he believed in the WG's "The Oharans are a threat to world peace" line. However, Saul's actions (and likely Akainu's) made him rethink things... and no matter what he says about it only being because of Saul I doubt killing a child would have been easy in the first place. Jump forward to the present, Aokiji's an admiral and seems a bit more on the fence about the Marines and WG as a whole. He's still loyal, but he's clearly questioning some of their methods. Regardless, he also clearly feels he's made a mistake when it comes to saving Robin. He's keeping track of her through the Marine's information network, and she's developed a reputation as a cold, monstrous woman who will work with you, support you, and then slip a knife in your back without blinking an eye (we as the audience know that her reputation is partially over-inflated and largely justified after seeing her interactions with Crocodile, but to those without context it seems pretty spot-on). WHen he runs into her and her newest marks (as he sees it) he decides to give them a fair warning: "I'm off duty, you go about your business. But that woman there? You better keep an eye on her". Why does he choose to spare them at first? Likely teh same reason he doesn't kill Luffy: respect for Garp (Luffy’s grandpa) So, why does he care so much about Robin in the first place? Two reasons: First, the WG took a desperate and monstrous action at Ohara, and thanks to him it was all for nothing. If the sole survivor ends up growing up to be everything they feared, it's pretty much all on his shoulders. But perhaps more importantly, if she is a monster than Saul sacrificed himself for nothing. Aokiji killed his friend, and it wouldn't mean a thing. That's some heavy shit to deal with for anyone. So yeah, Robin and Luffy survive their encounter, but Aokiji isn't done with them. He knows where they're headed, and presumably he knows that CP9 is there (although perhaps not and it was providence for Spandam that they went to the island with some of his best operatives). He gives the director the one piece of leverage Robin will never ignore, not knowing that the guy's a big enough tool to use it, by accident, at a Marine base (let's all take a moment of silence to contemplate on how awful Spandam is). Long story short, Ennies Lobby happens, everyone comes back, they all party, and Aokiji is there covertly. He could kill Robin and the entire damn crew if he wanted... but he doesn't. In fact, he seems happy. But this makes sense: Robin's found a place now, she has the family Saul promised her. Sure, she's still a threat to the WG, but he can cross that bridge when he comes to it (lazy justice ftw). THe important thing is that Saul was right. The important thing is that his friend's sacrifice wasn't in vain

This arc has so much worldbuilding, is a great conclusion to this whole saga that opens up the world of One Piece and sets up so many conflicts. I think a big part of why there's so much One Piece passion on here, is due to finally seeing fresh eyes giving this story a chance - a lot of fans are very accustomed to seeing others slander this series (and I'm talking about ppl who have done the rounds on the Manga/Anime front as well). Seeing an impartial reader become an impassioned fan in real-time, is incredibly vindicating for a lot of fans (who have had to love this series amongst the open ridicule of other Manga/Anime fandoms). Glad you're continuing to enjoy the story, and that you're already feeling compelled to re-read - this is definitely a story that rewards repeat readthroughs imo

As the others have mentioned, the story, and even Oda, take a break there, so it's a great time for a reread. PS: I'm so happy that you went in with relatively smaller expectations, as that's exactly how Oda intended people to go in when he started two decades ago, while slowly buidling up the world. I highly recommend you do that reread of the series after you see the next Saga after Thriller Bark arc. Once you finish the saga after that arc, you’ll feel comfortable doing a reread of the series at that point before continuing the series further if that makes sense. It’ll all become clear once you see the next saga coming up, definitely read it as soon as you can. Glad you enjoyed Enies Lobby.
@johnmartin98463 жыл бұрын
I’d wait two arcs after that. There’s literally a “halfway point” break point.

Fully encourage the rereading, you definitely miss some things and people the first read through. Though you may want to wait a few more arcs. Chapter 597 is a good turning back point, you’ll see why. A lot of big moments and unexpected connections are coming up, and it’ll make you appreciate some people more. Also, pay attention to some of Usopp’s lies when you do.

Given how much Merphy is loving One Piece at this stage, I would love to see her catch up to the story in a few months and see her discuss new weekly chapters here.

I know that time will come... she's HOOKED on One Piece now 🥰 Sadly I wouldn't be able to watch since I'm anime only 🤣😂

Every time she gets exited about seeing mermaids, a little smile appears on my face. I love your theories, I can’t wait for the next few arcs for you to have your mind completely blown.
@nicolev9903 жыл бұрын
@ZHANMIN WANG I mean, she’s probably already read through thriller bark (which doesn’t have mermaids). Right after that they’re basically on their way to fish man island, so I don’t consider it much of a spoiler. It’s just funny that she keeps on expecting mermaids but of course Oda’s teasing his readers.

Aokiji saved Robin on Ohara on a whim. He didn’t expect Robin to be later recognized, have a bounty on her head and lived a life in fear of betrayal. Thus he feels responsible to finish the job and end Robin as he should have in Ohara. But Post Enies Lobby, after confirming that Robin is happy and has found her place, he was able to find peace himself that his whim to save Robin wasn’t a wrong decision

Aokiji knows they are going to "Water 7" because in the grandline the log pose{navigator compass} has a set path it will take you depending on the island you travel to. They use magnetic field to find the next closest island. that is why the crew has to stay on their current island for a set amount of time before setting sail. probably wont see this, i was a little late on seeing these reviews but love the content. Just thought I'd let you know the Log Pose Mechanics

It's ok if you don't remember their names, One Piece's characters are so distinct I can mention "monster mermaid granny", "the square hair ladies" or "the smiling girl with the rabbit" everybody know who I'm talking about.
