I need help to get off this roof and into OPD life. Great video guys. What a shame the Welsh government couldn't come together with Welsh farmers and land owners to come up with some sort of OPD land lease scheme with possibly labour exchange/part exchange for land rent. Anyway I'll be down to Loughor when the pandemic restrictions are eased to take a serious look at this. Thanks Shaun

I believe if we can pull our resources together to create private loans to build community Farm Village so to speak. We could cover all the aspects off the OPD. With farming, furniture building, plant nursery, live stock ect... I have had a passion for this way of life for 9 years now with many hours of research in to combining aquponics, vertical grow, back to edam, gutter growing, wicking beds and much more all together as one working system. I hope you find this of interest so that we can look at ways to bring this about. Working as a group I believe we could raise the money to creat and show case this way off life. Though fund raising, grants ect... OPD is not just about creating a few farms but creating a network a family. As guard said to see a change we must be the change. Who ever reads this I hope you pass it on to others that wish to see things change for the better. If this pandemic has shown us one thing is that we need change more than ever.

It’s promising to see that low impact planning policies are being introduced now in England (Dartmoor has a policy and Cornwall has a proposed policy currently under consultation)

Try finding land in Suffolk! Small parcels get snapped up by people with equestrian needs. 10 acres of agricultural land would be anything between £100-200k and with no likelihood of getting planning for a small off-grid house because any houses being built in really rural areas are expected to be noteworthy from an architectural perspective. I know a couple who wanted an earth sheltered 2-bed bungalow on an 8 acre plot with ponds, trees, meadow who could only get permission by building a glorious 4-bed stunning glass fronted residence, Grand Designs style of build. Old bungalows in big gardens are being snapped up by developers for nearly £500k, then bulldozed and three 4-bed houses crammed onto the site. It's outrageous that we're all shoe-horned into smaller and smaller spaces with pointless back gardens filled with decking and almost no access to allotments of a decent size. What can be done? It feels very hopeless sometimes.

that is depressing, and I would have thought it would go the other way, having homes more in keeping with the landscape

Perhaps if rented land was allowed it would make it more accessible

Great interview. I like how Paul says that OPD would look really different in a socialist society. I always say if I had millions, I’d buy plenty of land and re wild everything. Less grass & sheep and more natural diversity.

I think sustainable family development need to become the old normal again, but as long as someone has to get permission, that permission can be denied just as it was implemented. So, as long as you're dependant on money, you can't truthfully be successful. Money is the best mousetrap ever invented. Squirrels don't pay rent. Why is that ? Therein lies the answer for everyone, and you obviously show you can do it without money yourself, as I know many who do. They just live off of and take care of Life. No money EVER.
