So we finally went with plan B to get the new engine on the cradle, just to realize we needed the bellhousing spacer off the old drive train. Couldn't believe I missed it, with all the comparing I did to figure out what I needed to swap over, but I didn't feel so bad since my mentor didn't think about it either. In this video I go after it, and go in to a bit of detail about some of the modifications necessary for the Allison v730 automatic conversion.

First off your videos have the best music. I have 4108 1972. Just got back from 4000mi trip on Dead &Co with my son. Still running the wet clutch 4 speed. But will be doing v730/731. Going to start gathering parts and info. Thanks and good luck brother. I'm Homelessgs Garage on fb.

Thanks a ton, it means a lot. I Just did about 2500 from AZ to WA and back to NV through CA and the bus did great, even at 8k elevation. Sent you a PM on FB :).

Thanks! Yes I remember that one. Ain't that the truth, if it wasn't for the vintage bus community I'd be lost, especially the Vintage Bus Mechanics and 4106 groups on Facebook.

I've got the gasket without the ear on it but I pulled it out of the box today and it was all in pieces .... can you be so kind as to give me the info as to where you are getting your gaskets from and maybe a part number that would be much appreciated...your return line is on the side of the ear mine is on the inside of the ear...at least that is how leon drilled it I think....thanks again my friend...

Looks like the ring is already installed on your engine, so the gasket with the ear should already be installed underneath, between the ring and the engine. I would call an allison/detroit shop for the gaskets. I don't know the part number, but the round one is same for all Allison 700 series from what I was told, if you tell them it's for a v730 bellhousing they should be able to look it up. I got the gaskets from US Coach, whom are knowledgeable and great for supplying hard to find vintage bus parts to keep these old busses going, which I appreciate, but i was a bit disappointed with their customer service and business practices, and ended up using only one of them. First the gaskets were backordered, ok, no problem. When they finally came he sent me two with the ear (at over $30), ok, mistakes happen, gave them a call and they said i could return it, and sent the round one (and charged me another $36), but he sent it to my billing address, which is my home in WA, in stead of the place i was working on the bus in AZ. When i called about it after another weeks wait and it not showing up, he told me he realized the mistake after he sent it wednesday of the week before, and not only did not immediately send another to the correct address, he would not even overnight one free of charge to fix the mistake (and wait till i sent the wrong and extra ones back), but wanted to charge me another $36 to snail mail me another. Now, they already had my money for the extra ear gasket, and were now contributing to multiple weeks of delays in my project which I could hardly afford to drag on any longer, so no way was I going to essentially loan them more and be $100 in to two gaskets and wait for a refund till i sent the two extras back, so i said screw it and cut my own out of an $8 roll of gasket material from the auto parts store. I had to make it in three pieces due to the limited width of the material, and mate the ends with silicone sealant, worked a treat. This will be included in a future video when I get to that point.

@@macelius Wow...what do you think of just using a liquid rubber gasket ...that's what Leon did on the oil pan? I can't see the gasket on it but maybe it's on there...

@@doityourselfwithfixinitwit270 It depends on how flat and flush the mating surfaces are, if they mate well I think it'd be ok if used according to the instructions, but I was told they can be so warped sometimes it takes two gaskets, and that silicone alone will leak, so I dressed the gaskets in Permatex Ultra Grey. Not a drop so far.
