On paper, it works but... Does it really works with those rectangles ? so small long difference between the hole... Doesn't also needs around at the extremity of those rectangles to prevent from wrong way ? The problem starts at 0:07 min

Neat. I observe that the rod never changes angle as it moves. Would remove the need for an articulating end of the rod. Not sure what applications this might serve besides sewing machine, or why it was beneficial there.

I think we still need for an articulating end of the rod to drive the needle. I don't think that it would be beneficial for modern sewing machines. I have not seen any old sewing machine that uses this mechanism. One application of this mechanism might be a pivot mechanism where the reciprocation motion transferred from 90 degrees corner. If you like I can make a video of it.

Looks like the mechanism is missing an important part. I see that if you make the device it wouldn't work as it shown in the animation. It would turn as a whole instead. There must be some contraption to prevent the rod from rotating and keep it horizontal all the time for the mechanism to work.

Thanks your visit and comment. And it is good catch, the animation as shown leave it to your imagination. Actually systems may turn as a hole as shown in the animation. I left the part where the rod connected to needle through a articulated joint. Than the bed of needle prevent it rotating as a hole.
