It's an impressive speaker. Although having heard it myself, I can only recommend buying it if you plan on playing it at ludicrously loud volumes. Buy it if you live in a detached house in the middle of nowhere, don't buy it if you have neighbours. You only get the best out of the speaker if you're playing it loud and have a large room to play it in. Bare in mind that to have this playing in stereo you need to buy two, plus the bridge, plus two stands to put them on - £5,227.00. For half this amount you could get a setup with ribbon tweeters and a nice subwoofer which sounds amazing at mid- to low volumes and doesn't mean you have to remortgage the house.

With no actual live mic audio this doesn't actually get any real point across, it seemed to be more an excersize of cinematography than a real review. Also just for the sheer fact of size, this wouldn't be able to create enough air movement/SPL to be nearly comparable to the level of a concert of any variety in a venue of that size. Regardless of the amount of watts supplied, the sound output is limited by the amount of air the woofers can physically move, and the size of the box/port.
@djlobb7 жыл бұрын
Exactly!!! I think he missed the point. Devialet don't claim that it can compete with a rock concert PA, in the same space. What they mean is that, when at normal speaker listening distances in the home, it is as loud as a rock concert from the audience perspective. Which honestly isn't terribly loud anyway as they keep them at a comfortable listening level that's just loud enough to be energetic these days
@usbtnt7 жыл бұрын
it's a bullshit video, but you're are also slightly wrong there, it is a bit about air movement but more about how the moving cones couple with the air that creates sound. you can have 18 inch speakers moving only a few millimeters compete with 24 inch cones that are moving a couple of inches
@vfam8257 жыл бұрын
He could just make same video at home. What did they do at that big place? blows my mind he didnt even tried to capture loudness staying in one end of the place and maxing the bloody speaker out.

Lots of points well made - yeah, hindsight is a wonderful thing - I should certainly of included more of the venue audio, you are bang on and I regret that. At its heart the review was meant to do something different to other reviews on KZbin, by people who, frankly, know a lot more about audio than I. It was about testing the claim on Devialet's website 'Phantom, 4,500W of power, 108 dB of physical impact, the sound level of a live rock concert.' That's the sentence that grabbed me and the source of the test. From your comments I guess I can see that there is room for interpretation, but checking back at their site tonight it's a straightforward claim that we tried to check out with a straightforward test. I'm listening though and your comments will inform how I approach reviews like this in the future.

Yes, I did put two Devialet Phantom Gold's on my shelfs and called it a day. Yes, my expectations where high. Yes, I had a similar reaction unboxing them. Yes, my mind was blown (what's going on here?!) the first time I cranked up the volume (including the silly shock & aw faces). Yes, it doesn't make any sense to me getting this volume and high fidelity from such small sized speakers. Yes, I needed them in my life. Yes, I think they are beautiful and just love to stare at them (I have them on the optional Devialet Treepods, which enhances their striking looks even more). Yes, I don't regret purchasing them although they set me back five times my monthly rent. Yes, I can't wait to move to a bigger house without neighbours, because they're mad and my current living room is not Rock Concert size. The Gold Phantom is designed as a wireless speaker, of course, and has both Bluetooth and wi-fi connectivity. But there is also a digital optical socket for legacy equipment, and an ethernet connection for those who value signal stability over decorative minimalism. Setting the whole thing up wasn't effortless and didn't go too smoothly. First time the bluetooth connection was poor. Using the needed Spark app to control my Phantom set-up with two Gold's and the Dialogue box needed some trial and error to get used to. I resetted the Dialogue and Phantoms and after my second try it all worked perfectly fine. Working with the Spark app has its ups and downs, but in general I'm quite content with it. Although some crucial UX problems should definitely be fixed in the future. I use Tidal and Qobuz to stream lossless mp3's (FLAC), it really doesn't make any sense to listen to normal mp3's on let's say Spotify. Music sounds best on the Phantom Gold's when listening to vinyl, or CD's. Obviously. The pair of them delivered surprising clarity and coherence across the audioband, astoundingly deep and controlled bass, reference-class sound staging and imaging, and extremely high output. This makes a pair of Gold Phantoms with the Dialog a compelling option not only for those who want something that sounds great and is small and rich in features, but also for the audiophile who cares only about sound quality. And when I say “sounds great,” I don’t mean “for the money” or “for a small speaker” -- the Gold Phantom sounds great, period. I only turned them up to 100 (max volume) for a minute and my ears where buzzing right after that. The Phantom Gold is capable of peak volume levels comparable to those of a modest aircraft. Which, in my domestic situation, ought to be ample.They shouldn't allow people to buy speakers for their living room that go this loud! Are they insane? It's not healthy. Nor responsible. I never ever had them louder than 60 ever since. Usually between volume level 30 and 40 is most pleasing to the ears. It does kind of feel like driving a Lamborghini at 100 Km per hour while it could go 300Km per hour easily. Hooked up my Smart TV with the Dialogue box with an optical cable. Watching movies with the sound coming from two Phantom Gold's beats any Soundbar on the market. Are you kidding me? It's not Dolby Digital (ATMOS), but what's going on here?The incredible bass just vibrates the whole building and made things fall from my walls (there's a Night Mode setting in the Spark app, which makes the sonic earthquake more bearable). Finally I can hear dialogues clearly and the overall soundstage is impressively wide. I can imagine adding three more Gold's would get you IMAX sound in your living room, but I'll take the sound I get from 'just' two Phantom Gold's any day. Accompanying the brick-cracking bass is a hectic flurry of movement from the side-firing woofers, the sort of alarmingly visual driver extension that in any other circumstances would have us leaping forwards to reduce the volume and prevent possibly terminal damage. It’s a bit of visual theatre you simply don’t get with any other product. Pro's: - Tremendously fulsome sound. - Small size, very practical on many levels (26cm tall and 25cm wide, 11.4 kg). - Future proof because of Devialet’s Analogue Digital Hybrid (ADH) technology. It combines Class A and Class D amplification in an effort to maximise each technology’s inherent benefits while minimising its equally inherent shortcomings (free upgrades for life, so never having to change hardware anymore!). - Visually, the Devialet is like no other device outside the Phantom range. - Smart inside, striking outside. I love the design of the Phantom Gold's, they just look gorgeous. Cons: - You want a minimum of two Phantoms. - You need the Dialogue box (which sets up its own wifi network that is exclusively for the Phantoms without interference of other wifi using devices). - You want the Phantoms on Treepods or Stands for optimal sound. - All together it costed me 5200 Euro (which is a lot of money, but almost a steal for what I've got sitting at my home right now)

Very nice review! That´s exactly what I would expect from reviewers. You did their job best, and you deserve to eat their bread. Naaa, I´m not sure about the "aircraft" sound pressure levels, but that wasn´t that much amount of hyperbole in the text. When I turn on my PA, things break! Ceiling, done... Window, done. Things that can fall - done... :-)
@adejupe83087 жыл бұрын
Have loved the Phantom for a while now... and I'm an audio engineer!!! To answer many people's questions... the Phantom is a hermetically sealed HIGHLY PRESSURISED unit - hence how it can shift so much air and with such force. The 4.5K of amplification in such a small unit is done by a very clever combination of both Class A and Class D circuitry. The guys at Devialet have achieved an amazing feat of engineering. And Jason... good to have you back... the main main!!!

This speaker is awesome, but I'm pretty sure meaning behind the claims of it being as loud as a rock concert is being completely misinterpreted here. It doesn't mean it can fill a stadium, it means when listening to it from a normal range it will sound close to as loud as a concert will sound when you are at the concert. But it's impressive that it is that loud in a large area.
@infamousgaming87042 жыл бұрын
I've been dying to get my hands on one of these😔 I am a huge music person and this is definitely somthing I've always want to test out and experience.
@kloug20067 жыл бұрын
For a claimed dB level to make sense, the distance between the ear/mic and the sound source must be stated. The level of a rock concert is up to 120 dB at an average distance from the stage, up to 138 dB in front of the stage and up to 139.5 dB near the speakers. For home speakers, the standard used is a measurement taken one meter from the front of the speaker. In the case of Devialet, no distance is mentioned, but it is likely that they used the standard one meter distance. At 108 dB, this is very far from the actual dB level of a real concert.
@colourbasscolourbassweapon2135 Жыл бұрын
well i have a dual 18inch subwoofer that 6400watt that does that aka 138db and it's in my very Small house R.I.P Neighbours and they're right next to me LMAO
@EgenMusik7 жыл бұрын
4500 watts is most likely peak power (i would guess a few hunded watts RMS until someone proves me wrong), and concert levels are closer to 115 dB. Still very impressive for such small speaker, but for that price i expect RMS power in the specs, and less lies like "zero distorsion" =/
@kunchography37257 жыл бұрын
They're not lies. They literally achieve zero distortion. They're hybridising Class A and Class D amplifiers, and using some very advance methods of output, like the pressurised woofers which can put out over 100KG of forcefulness.
@gary23jag7 жыл бұрын
Phantom-Atic I'm not sure Steven Hawkings would see how you can get more out than you put in. Running 4.5kw from less than 13amp. supply.
@CrashPCcz6 жыл бұрын
That is load of bull. If you knew physics, and knew what modulation does with all woofers, what thermal compression and other stuff does, you would know there is nothing capable of delivering anything remotely close to zero distortion. Pressurized woofer means nothing really. 100kg also nothing. There is nothing with which this speaker could push against air with this amount of force. So if that force is applied, it must be absorbed by the rest of the speaker. And that makes no sense.
@denythesound6 жыл бұрын

At what distance does this thing have 108db? The dB unit is measured at certain distances, and the correct is to say dB/m . At 50cm it may have 108dB and at 2meters it may have just 40dB. So the "108dB" is irelevant IF the distance is not mentioned. Same as speed of a car, you need to say miles/hour not just miles. You can't measure speed jut in miles.
@thetigergamer46445 жыл бұрын
40dB? that's extremely quiet, 40dB is as loud as a library . Your phone probably produces 60 ish dB from 2 meter distance. It also depends if it's in room or outside. In room it'll get a lot louder.

Rock concerts exceed 130 dB SPL and sometimes even 140 dB or more. Bear in mind that you testing this speaker without a crowd. People who visit a concert absorb sound and therefore you need a lot and I mean a lot of amplifier power and high efficiency speakers. Most PA speakers have a sensitivity of 110 dB or higher. That’s 110 dB of sound on 1 meter distance with only 1 watt of power delivered by the amplifier. Back to the crowd: for every person in an indoor or outdoor area you need 10 watt of power delivered by the amps. Knowing that most concerts exceed 44000 plus people you can do the math and know for yourself that this Bluetooth speaker cannot deliver the job. It’s normal for events that they have 250000 watts of real power blasting to the crowd. But nevertheless I think for home purposes the Devialet is an awesome speaker. No doubt about it. It surely can deliver loud and clean sound, 108 dB is really loud people. Most hifi systems can’t even reach this level. I definitely want to listen to this beautiful shaped speaker in real life. Awesome video my friend! Best wishes, Emiel.

1 is impressive. Just imagine like 10 of them synced up and placed equally around the room wall mounted in surround sound fashion. It would literally be a concert from any part of the room

Liking the idea of testing the manufacturers claims! As we all know, sometimes they like to exaggerate, which can lead to us feeling short changed or even straight up lied to upon discovering they don't live up to said claims. Keep up the reviews Jason, and please keep the manu. claims testing element also as I think that's a great way to give us at home, a realistic expectation of the products you review/ test! :)

It's just occurred to me, you Periscoped this set up at the time, way before Unboxed Therapy filmed it! I know everyone's trying to get in, but I think the regular vlogs thing would really suit you, a la Casey Neistat. You always have that spark for life and gadgets, that people enjoy watching. Can't wait to see more of your reviews!

4500 Watts Devialet Phantom Gold, 4500 Watts 4500 Watts 4500 Watts jajajajaja do you know the size of a 4500 Watts class D amp ? and what about the speakers??

We need someone to put two of these up against a pair of KEF LS50W.
@lukabosnjak38293 жыл бұрын
Kef ls50 are crap, not flat frequency response for that price... Phantom is more hifi sounding and much louder with more deep and precise bass, but you can get some better but bigger speakers for money... ;)

It won't be as loud as a rock concert (at least in a rock concert sized place, though maybe on your desk) but I bet if you put one in each corner of a room (add some acoustic foam) you could have a seriously thick home audio setup that ask people asking where you hid the active 12" subwoofer(s) and not have the wife complain about large speaker boxes ruining the sitting room feng shui. I've never heard them this is a disclaimer. The reason it needs 4500 is to get that sound out of a tiny sealed box needs huge voice coil speakers with gym plates for cones to lower the resonant frequency so you don't lose the low bass and produce a honk/boom box and keep the cone tough. Yes this does make the drivers incredibly inefficient. You would probably need a nuclear reactor to power enough of these for live music use. I'm curious to try sticking it by the wall or right in the corner of that venue to see what sort of bass output. Apparently you can get +12dB off a corner (+6 concentrating the sound in 1/4 of the air space and another +6 for increasing the efficiency of the speaker to air interaction by coupling it with its in phase reflections from the corner.

Right I went into Westfield's speaker shop and asked for a demo !!! Bob Marley .. the lady flicked it on hit play.. Omfg!!!!!!! I swear to God the shop rattled like nails in a bucket and my mouth litterally fell open! The bass went in my mouth and vibrated right out my asshole. I was left stunned with a little bit of drool dripping of my gob... 1 year later I brought X2!! My front room is 18ft by 12ft. Hahaha People laugh at them say they look gay...... Haa. They soon shut up once fired up!!! Untouchable. 11/10

You forget that at a rock concert, people are in the building and they absorb a lot of sound with their bodies. A rock concert have a average SPL of 120 to 130 dB. The SPL this speaker puts out, 108 dB (probably dB C weighting) is not extreme loud. Also, the size of the speaker is small and a small sized speaker always performs less in any kind than a bigger one. I want to see you stand next to a P.A. speaker at a rock concert. You are deaf before you even got the chance to measure the sound. A single pair of P.A. speakers produces 135 dB and more at 1 meter distance. At a concert there are lot's of speakers. There are speakers available that can easily produce 144 dB of sound at the mid and high frequencies, and I can tell you that those frequencies with such amount of sound pressure is not nice to stand next to when its fully blasting. Just saying...

+Emiel333 Bakhuis Cheers for feedback. This test has seen a huge reaction and I'm thinking a second review - with commenters suggesting the parameters is an interesting idea. Whatcha think? J

Jason Bradbury I would love to see a 2nd test with this Devialet speaker. It sure is an impressive wireless speaker, no doubt. Maybe you can do a test in a room with 50 people inside that same room and check how it performs. But I must say, although the hall is empty, the low frequencies are amazing! I hope to see a 2nd video. If I had the money, I would buy one 😉

In London, the standard mains voltage is 230V. Assuming 100% efficiency, 4500 watts would draw 19.57 amps from the line. The power cord (and the extension cord) show are nowhere near the diameter necessary to supply that kind of power. Plus, you would have to have the box hooked up to a dedicated circuit breaker or 25A or greater. I went to the manufacturere's website, and they conveniently omitted the power consumption from their specifications. The sdpeaer may be louder than most, but 4500 watts? As far as I'm concerned, it's bullshit until proven otherwise.

I have a hard time believing this system can outperform a well tuned line array speaker system. More power to them if it does. These speakers are a bargain if they can compete against speakers that cost multiple thousands of dollars. I'm really blown away by the power of this little speaker.

One of my customers had 2 of these and they're absolutely mind blowing! I got a $4000 klipsch setup and depending on what you listen to these sound better than my system! It does an unbelievable good job at filling large rooms, you almost can't tell what direction the sound comes from
