One-Stripe White Belt Gets into Street Fight!

John Ikuma is a one-stripe white belt in the Gracie Combatives program who hasn't trained for over 5 months. On Friday, March 24, his jiu-jitsu was put to the test when he intervened in a violent assault. The very next day, he returned to class and he broke down the entire incident for Rener as well as all the students in attendance at the 10am Gracie Combatives class. John managed the distance AND the damage. Amazing!

What I love about Gracie Combatives is that it is street defense oriented Jiu Jitsu working from a clinch against an opponent who's main arsenal is striking - every position in Combatives assumes you are being struck at with punches.

Daniel Skipp They (we, us, me) do not assume you can safely eat a punch on the way it. One of our rules says - who manage the distance, manage the damage. We tell all students the first thing they have to think about is protecting themself from striking. There is no such thing like "absorbing a rabbit punch and gain dominance". Every situation is different. Every opponent is different. Depends on indicators from a "bad guy" - you protect yourself at first, then make them tired while you preserve your energy and finish the fight if you have to. Being gouged or grappled - false. You will learn during gracie combatives how to defend yourself from that. Ripped - Women empowered - different course. Men dont get ripped Neck-crank and stabbing with a sharp object ect - less common behaviour on the street (according to statistics). Same with the kicks, If someone can headkick other person it means that is skilled opponent....no one leg kick on the street. And you got to be very unlucky to be knock-out by kick to the liver on the street by unskilled opponent. Please, go to any ctc close to you and just try....You will have a free trial...judge Gracie Combatives course after you try it....not before

Muscle memory! 20+ years after my last judo class, as a teenager, and I still have the muscle memory. I was only a green belt, but I never forgot. I have been practicing Kuk Sool Won for 8 years, and every now and then, I like to have a little fun in class with hip throws, break falls and grappling. As a retired police lieutenant and black belt holder in Korean Tae Kwon Do with some training in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, I will say that first instinct is to help someone in need. However, as a police officer you'd be surprised how many domestic violence calls I'd go on to find similar situations where husband beating wife or sister, mother, etc.. The second we had the suspect in custody the family turns against us. These types of situations are dangerous because the sister could have turned against him. Not only that, but you risk getting shot or really hurt if there are multiple attackers - hence the reason I trained in Tae Kwon Do for over 40 years. Granted, jiu-jitsu is brutal one on one, but speaking from experience I am sure glad I have mastered a few kicks and hand to hand combat in a multiple attacker situation. Of course someone well trained in jiu-jitsu should be able to handle more than one attacker, but the art is geared more toward one on one.

I trained for years with a Korean master who taught the Korean navy. More hand to hand combat and mastering basic kicks that have proved to be very effective. It’s saved my life countless times.

just came to the realization that, when me and my brothers fought growing up, we unknowingly were using BJJ techniques against each other. Albeit basic stuff, but still pretty much what you see in this video. No matter how hard we fought we never punched/kicked, so our fights, and there were many, involved grappling. (important to know that i'm a triplet so most fights were more or less equal in terms of strength). Such a weird feeling watching this video realizing that. I suppose BJJ is kinda pure, or rather a "natural" fighting style in that after trial and error, fight after fight, these moves just emerged over the course of our roughhousing. dope

Honest question from a "below-white belt:" What would keep the bad guy from smashing the back of his head into the front of the good-guy's face when the good guy was sitting right behind the bad guy? (Any insight would be helpful.) Thank you!

Push your forehead against the back of his head, or get your head lower than his, like against his shoulder. Try it out next time you're the big spoon.

That's an absolute last measure. Only if the guy has a weapon or is about to kill you. You don't want to go through the legal process and the emotions of killing someone

Zach Simpson conceal carry, open carry...and you need ground game. Plenty of videos of officer and citizens without ground game and the gun is useless or over used i.e. excessive force. Must have all tools available to you
