The "one take thing" and "not writing it down" thing is impressive the same way we are impressed by great movie scenes that were ad libed and unscripted. It gives it a mystique of being from the ether. It doesn't take away from the body of work if it's not done in that format, but it adds to it if it is done in that format. This doesn't mean that it should be the standard. These are special moments and artists. Don't try to do this at home kids.

the core of the question is does doing it in one take affect the quality of the record. When you’ve came up writing your able to map out things In Your mind and have foresight about how to make a verse or song cohesive all the way through(mental practice, building that creative muscle). From that your grow to a point you do t necessarily need to write cause you can envision and edit on the fly in your head. What the guys were talking about with the younger generation and I’ve seen it as an audio engineer. Is they go find a random beat, don’t have any song structure in mind or even know how to count bars and sit in the Stu piecing lines together to the point every verse or song they do sounds the same. They were just trying not to step on coat tails or not make you get guest not want to come by not saying names
@Harold10ful2 жыл бұрын
Also it adds to and gives major credibility to you as a word smith and MC. If you didn't know it was one take or wasn't written down before it was recorded it's fine because that is the usual way humans do it. But once you find out the process of someone who has no paper no pen walk in and walk out one time it speaks to the level of genius only a few rappers have ascended to God level rappers like Biggie etc. once people find that out it adds MASSIVE credibility especially when your material comes out way better than someone who sat in front of a notepad for days at a time stuck with writers block. It is definitely way more impressive.

@12:00 The reason a recorded one take rap is impressive, is because a lot of artist may miss pronounce a word, lost some breath control, forgot a line, punched in the second half of a verse because it didn’t sound as good as the first ,cause the energy of it fell off etc. these things aren’t at the for front of our minds, but when brought to our attention, knowing what it takes to write, come up with lyrics, remember it then spit it flawlessly? I care about spitting a verse in one take because it sounds better, period. It’s a performance. We revere rappers for breath control. When a punch-in isn’t executed well-and often even when it is-you can tell. It disrupts the rhythm. One reason why contemporary rappers rap live over their own vocals is because they couldn’t possibly rap the song live in one take-they never have!
@biigspice2 жыл бұрын
I get what mecca was saying . He basically saying It's like the dunk contest. A one attempt successful dunk (one take) is more impressive than 10 attempts dunk (punch in) The dunk with 10 attempts may still get a 10 , but the the dunk with 1 attempt that gets a 10 makes you feel more impressed

This was a robust discussion and I'm looking forward to hearing the rest of the interview. I think Mecca's point is that "one take" rappers are more distinguished than other rappers. While the others guys and Guru place more value on the quality of the record regardless of how it is executed.

I will say, as a person who does music myself, it is extremely difficult to do 1 take. It's not as easy as it sounds. Especially if you're doing technical raps and going in and out of pockets a lot. Not to mention breath control and the other small nuances. Which is what makes the 1 take thing very very impressive. With that said, I'm with Guru on this one. As long as the finished product is 🔥 and it's what you envisioned then you've done your job. Infact my engineer even said that he wishes more of the rappers that come to him would punch in sometimes because sometimes their work isn't as good. They sacrifice on the quality just to say that they did it in 1 take or just so they squeeze in as many songs as they could in the alloted time frame they have. As for me personally I've never been able to do 1 take because I'm such a perfectionist and focus too much on the smallest of details. If I pronounce something even slightly off I gotta redo it. I was not blessed with the ability to just go in 1 take and then everything still sounds immaculate. I gotta do a bunch of punches. 🤣 Let's just say my engineer is a super patient guy. 😅 By the way can't wait for the full episode. 🙌🏽

We get (or have gotten) hung up on arbitrary stats and feats that don’t matter to the end product. One take vs. punching in, production hardware vs. software, using a mixing board vs. mixing with plug-ins. All things that 99% of music listeners couldn’t hold a 45 second convo with you about.

Glad they called Guru out. I definitely don’t believe dude laid verses for a whole track while a video was still playing once completed. FOH Also- the one take process is highly overrated. It’s impressive: but in the long run- it doesn’t have a direct impact on how great a song is. It’s one of those afterthought types of medals on your chest (provided the finished product is dope).

That line about "developing the Fundamental's like Tim Duncan before you try to be Kobe, they both have 5 rings" is some deep philosophical REAL shit!! When word got out about Jay NOT writing & then they showed it in the Fade to Black movie, I remember almost every MC/Rapper even known star's started saying they'd stopped writing! Everyone CAN'T do it & those that try barely create Dope music!!!🤦🏽♂🤷🏽♂🤴🏽✌

'Practice, practice, never re-enact this.' Jay Z's rhymes at 19 years old back when he was spitting fast. So when you slow it down it naturally becomes easier. He also stated how he had to compile rhymes on the go as he had no pen n paper whilst out and about. Essentially, if you put your mind to it, you'll see what you can come up with too. Perspective.. This is what Young Guru was explaining that flew over many heads. People forget Lil Wayne also inspired the spitting with no pen when he dropped, 'A Milli.' Especially down south.

Contrary, it does matter knowing if Jay performed a verse in one take.....This is where we lack as a culture...Knowing that Jay Z performed a verse in one take could set a higher precedence to the future artists no just rappers....Knowing Jay performed in one take could 1. Aspire artists to TRAIN THEIR MIND for perfection both mentally and verbally and to "not mess up" when given an opportunity of performing in the midst of executives 2. Help the artist not waste precious studio time by going in and possible completing 7 songs in a night that could be an album. 3. Or regular fans who might be using this method while in school/college such as being on a debate team or an athlete that has to communicate with media on camera and off. So it does matter, GURU, respectively.

It doesn’t matter bro. I get what you’re saying but as a fan, you shouldn’t give af if it was done in one take or not. Just be impressed when you find out that it was done in one take and move on with life. You think we would care if we found out Nas did multiple takes on Illmatic or Biggie with Life After Death (or Ready to Die)? Or what about Pac with Me against the world? Those albums are hip hop gold regardless. The final product is all that matters. It’s just impressive when we find out it only took one take

Jay and Wayne being able to come up with the type of lyricism and content they do with no pad no pencil and 1 take is simply amazing Migos, Uzi, 21 Savage claiming to do it makes perfect sense and the music clearly shows. Its impressive when a rapper can do that and put out mind blowing bars that most people couldn't put together if they had all year to think and write it down

@@durrtyjerzeeable Me being a MC myself, I always write on paper but it takes me weeks for me to write a verse depending on what it is but when I do write it down, I would memorize my verse before recording it. I use to record into the mic while reading my pad and I listen to my verse back and it sounded like I was reading my lines. Just by hearing the way I said my lyrics, it didn’t sound right to me. Reading from my pad throws me off. So what I started doing was memorizing my whole verse and I’ll record. When I played my verse back, it sound like it was more natural and my cadence was riding on the beat really well. Sometimes when Im at work or riding around, I would come up with dope lines on the fly. When I have a pen and pad in front of me, my mind is blank and I think too hard, which is weird to me.
