Hey David! I love those little "lightbulb" moments we have on our golf journeys. As another poster commented, it would be interesting to see you experiment with the right hand - getting it more under the club a bit and in a stronger position. I went from a pretty weak grip (which was then called a "neutral" grip when I was coming up long ago in the 90s) to a stronger one to promote a draw, get the flight and spin down, and gain some distance. This all worked, in combination with some small setup changes. But there was a learning curve with controlling the face, as is to be expected. I ended up bending my irons a degree or so flat, also. And I had to learn how to aim at the right edge of greens, which was harder than I thought it would be!

Yes you’re right and I could also try that for sure. My grip gets too weak a lot of the time and strengthening it would help the contact also

David, once again, thank you for sharing. Like you, I work on my swing constantly. I bought my R10 based on your reviews. I am surprised you didn't look at the face-to-target as a more direct comparison between grips. Once again, thank you for sharing.

Hey David, great vid. Shows how important the grip is. A proper grip is in fact the #1 part of the swing. Neither thumb should be down center. Both down opposite sides. As far as your grip, just my two cents and someone who has used and changed grips multiple times. Your grip looks quite weak, which promotes fade. I hope you will try to rotate right hand to the right a tiny bit, even 1/4-1/2 inch. That will help naturally close face and promote draw. Too much is a pull/pull draw, and its amazing what a 1/4 inch will do. Rotating both hands adds more of course. Glad that thumb is helping though. Keep up the good fight. ✌️

Thank you mate. And yes there’s a light rotation. Controlling the clubface is key 😁

I have a 3 Hybrid with a Winn grip it has that kind of wear down on it but I am not a slicer of the ball. I draw or hook it. I think the Winn grip is much softer than the other grips I use. I was gonna say the first five shots where a great dispersion!! But putting the thumb over looks like it helped. I've been working on keep my forearms more together I think it is helping me get more consistency with my strikes. But I have only been practicing with the phigolf 2 swing stick. Hope to get out to the range again next month and maybe play a round!! Keep up the good work David!!🏌‍♂⛳😀

@@davidmaxfieldgolf I even tried out moving the thumb and it did cuase the shot to do a fade or draw. I believe my thumb was normally setup for the draw. But it works!!

It's pretty cool how into your swing you are and can "self diagnose" and improve without lessons. Good work sir. I'm actually going to try this hopefully Saturday if the rain ever stops here in Florida!!!

I have nothing against the thumb on the side and I have seen an entire methodology built around it. I just thought that I would mention though, that I seem to see your hand path coming quite inside out in the late down swing and then lead wrist going into extension slightly before and through impact. This would seem to me to introduce an extra timing element into the release. A firmer lead wrist going into impact (with the same hand path) and then the trail wrist crossing over the lead would conceivably introduce a consistent piercing draw. In any case, all the best. Cheers.

Yes you are right, didn’t know there was a methodology around the thumb though haha but with the thumb it’s just 1 thing to think about that keeps the clubface square. Once I’ve got that working fine I’ll add one more thing at a time like you’ve mentioned here 😁

@@davidmaxfieldgolf Sounds good, I recognize that the methodogy thing sounds weird. The proponent is an older guy who has his own youtube channel and who has developed this methodology that is very centered around getting the trail thumb off of the grip. He gets it down to the side of the grip with the thumb pad not in contact with the grip. His claim is that this fixes virtually every common problem in most people's swings and increases power. Unfortunately, for the life of me, I can't remember his name or any other coordinate although I have watched some of his videos but a long time ago, and my history is not helping. The approach has other elements but the grip is very central to it. Speaking of that kind of thing, have you seen the channel "Scotty's Golf Grip". Similar kind of deal with an even more unorthodox kind of grip but some of the results are quite amazing. His most recent video is with a new-ish golfer who is predictably a a very high handicapper and poor ball striker. The results of a couple of hours of instruction with Scotty (system originator) are pretty incredible. I'm not advocating anything, and the grip is very unorthodox, but as a student of all things golf swing, it's pretty interesting. Just thought I'd explain myself a little more.. Cheers.

By moving your thumb over, would you say you are effectively giving yourself a slightly “stronger” grip as it is called, even though you aren’t moving your knuckles?
