I was a professor of art teaching photography for over 30 years in the US. I am now retired. Of all the sites, I find this the most centered, with the least BS and the most helpful. Thank you.

To be honest every sensor has drawbacks and positives, I started on crop sensor, and have gotten some truly amazing photos at dark live events with the right lenses and techniques! When it came time to choose between a full frame and MFT camera I chose the GH5, I get photos that people love and I love. Get good at what you shoot with, if you have a specific need for a specific quality then get an upgrade, but don’t make things out to be a holy grail piece of equipment! A great photographer could take a great photo with most any camera! If you aren’t good enough to take great photos consistently then expensive equipment won’t make a big difference.

It will take a few years, but the baby will want to help carry things, or at least pull a little red wagon full of equipment. Also, some dogs like jobs and can be trained to wear saddle-type bags. Sheep, too! No more excuses!

I love the answer to becoming a Lumix ambassador… Practically everyone uses Canon, Sony, Nikon, and even Fuji now they have medium format cameras, and there's not a lot of deviation on that in the KZbin world. I love love LOVE my Canon R5, but I still just love how you've found a camera maker you love and prefer that's off the beaten path and have started working with them after they reached out to you. That's totally brilliant!

Another photographer I follow does landscape with a crop sensor. I don’t see a problem with crop sensors what so ever, so long as you can capture the image. I own a crop sensor camera and appreciate the size and weight, along with the surprising quality it gives vs the full frame I have.

Pulled my back picking my 7 month old up yesterday. Watch out for that. And when yours arrives people you know will flood you with their old baby stuff. The baby owning community is strong. And people want rid of all their old crap that is useless to them but relevant to you. Don't get gear goggles on for baby stuff, they grow so quickly there is no point in buying the rolls Royce of things. Definitely invest in a good hi chair that will do 0-toddler and also a cot that does 6 months to 5 years (Snuz). The sleep deprivation is REAL, prep for it. And get ready to feel like a butler for a long time. It is AMAZING enjoy the ride dude.

Personally, I don't worry about styles. I've seen people go with styles and just shoot things based around one theme. For an example I've seen people that just shoot mountains and that's it, other just shoot animals in specific time of the year, and many are successful with it, but I don't like it. My style is to shoot everything I find interesting. I not only offer landscapes of all kinds, I also shoot portraits, I do astrophotography, I shoot vehicles, architecture, I do street photography, basically everything I can. I don't like limitations and limiting myself to just one thing. I think none of us would be fine with just eating one exact same thing every day, right?

I think the mirrorless camera question should be more about what features the camera offers. The fact is digital cameras are improving massively all the time, and they just so happen to be mostly mirrorless. Take the Canon R5 for example. Any wildlife photographer would perhaps want one of those for the amazing animal eye focus. So I’d buy that camera mainly for that reason rather than because it’s mirrorless. :-)

Agreed on the style thing. I've only been able to properly edit for about three and a half years now, but I went from needlessly moody and dark from trying to come up with something on purpose to having four set types depending on what the photo is: Contrasty and cool with a magenta tint to mimic some old sun-faded film shots I saw as a kid (my general style), desaturated (for portraits), very desaturated and warm (old love of sepia), and contrasty black and white. Every single one of those works in just about every single kind of light except for flash, though they're tailored to my usual hard sunlight. Do I still edit outside of those set four? Sure. Sometimes a photo needs a different mood. But otherwise, it's worked for me thus far. And about the individual color tweaking thing, Capture One allows for eyedroppers to select them and manually adjusting the range of what colors from what you picked are being affected by your color sliders, if you want to widen it a bit. Maybe helpful for people who don't particularly like the idea of the Lightroom subscription, don't need Photoshop (or Photoshop integration), or don't mind GIMP. Honestly not sure if Lightroom has that option yet.

Style, I don't agree with (kinda) a lot of people on IG for example stick to the same style, dark mono tones for example, after scrolling for a few minutes then the photos start to merge and look the same, some like that, some don't. I have been taking photos since 2006 and don't stick to any style but I think this works for me as it's completely versatile and changes with mood, scenery, weather, subject and also with different editing techniques too. It makes my page more interesting (I believe anyway) some may not agree.

You have plenty of time for baby shopping don’t panic! I left mine until quite late just in case it didn’t happen, I didn’t want stuff in the house. But do talk to friends, what did they find good and what not, do accept hand me downs if offered even if you keep them as back up. I hope your little one eats well and sleeps, but plan that both are unlikely most of the time and you’ll both be kna** ered for a couple of months. So all day bike trips up mountains may not happen, we will much appreciate videos on how to do awesome composites 😀. And do look into doing some exercises to strengthen your core muscles, should have less problems with you back and lifting a baby in a car seat in and out of the car will be a test..

Shooting in the same location...... 1) The light is constantly changing, as is the weather and the seasons. I live near Loch Ness and I've taken 100s photos but I'm always looking for something new 2) It's a great place to practice. Try different lenses, filters, bracketing, focus merging, all sorts of techniques. You don't want to take a once in a lifetime trip to the Serengeti and then get home and find your one shot of a tiger in a tree is out of focus

Camera companies say their cameras are weather-sealed but they don't IPX rate them-aside from Olympus's very conservative IP1X rating for the EM1X. I'm sure its a warranty liability issue but I would even take a certified IPX test rating over nothing even if they don't cover that level of use in their warranty.

Hi James. My wife and I changed from a Sony system to Fuji towards the end of last year, funded partly by not being able to go anywhere due to the C word. Although we recouped some of what we spent on new cameras and lens by selling all our Sony gear on eBay we still paid out a fair amount of money. So a question for your next Q&A, or maybe you could answer here, how essential is Camera Insurance, where is the best place to look for it and roughly how much should be spent on it? I know it's probably not an easy question to give a quick answer to but any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated 😊

Good grief! I can remember what I was doing in 1989! Actually that was the year I competed in the World Junior Disabled Sport Championships! I was 16! It was interesting by the way, that you mentioned taking photos in the same or a similar location all the time. I've done this a lot, as I'm sure we all have, during lockdown, but also because I struggle to actually get to the 'far flung' places I'd perhaps like to go. I have to think to myself "Well, I might have gone to the same place and shot this same photograph 50 times before, but not today!"

18:05 agreed with spare batteries but I don't agree with third party batteries. This might be depending on the country but over here in Germany if your camera has a legit warranty issue and they scan your camera and see that you used a third party battery they will void your warranty and you get a really expensive repair bill because you saved 20€ buying a cheap battery. I prefer oem because I belive that the Sony camera I use works the best with Sony batteries.

The easiest way to make money in photography as a teenager is.......... sell your camera! Just a wee joke. Not a hater by the way. The money comes when you start putting in a bit of effort and being very proactive. Like James said, family and friends first then they will say to their friends and so on. then the fee can start going up a bit (don't undersell yourself) People will start to recognise your work and work ethic is also very import. Just be keen, turn up on time and do your best. Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!
