People always ask how to get smoother gimbal footage, and in today’s video I show you one of the ways I do just that. Not only does recording in 30fps give you smoother footage, but it will also improve your footage quality in low light, as well create more dramatic looking sequences.

Ayee he's back! I never considered slowing 30p down, but I love the way it looks! It's smooth, a little slower, but nowhere near as slow as 60p, making for some very cinematic footage! Awesome for B-Roll segments as well, where people tend to only use 60fps or above nowadays!

Hey Daniel I really like your videos. It's perfect length, precise and get to the point. In these days I find myself no time to watch Peter McKinnon videos. He used to create great contents about filmmaking and photography. Now it somehow degrades to another vlogging channel I care less. Probably because most viewers do like that format but I am definitely losing interests when there is too much vlogging with fewer contents.

You can still record at 60 FPS, slow down the video to 80% then export at 24 FPS. Recording at 60 FPS gives the added benefit of slowing down even more if you need to.

He said that already but shooting at high frame rates means using a faster shutter which can sometimes underexpose your footage which then means you need more iso meaning more noise?
@kuunami
@kuunami 6 жыл бұрын
PalaHD is correct. The benefit of shooting at 30fps is that you don't need to increase your shutter speed like you would at 60fps.
@papirazzi8014
@papirazzi8014 5 жыл бұрын
I am confused by replies to this comment. I believe Sergio is correct. Assuming lighting is not a problem, then shooting at 4k/60fps would be preferable where it's slowed down 80% to create the smooth dreamy motion, but then you also have the ability to slow to 40% if you wanted to use slow motion.

I recently discovered this from just hand held filming. Seems to make my videos looks smoother and less jittery, so you don’t need a gimbal really. Only problem is now you have longer video clips, so you really have to decide what you want to use and then also the audio of course will never match up if there’s a visual needed to the sound. You do have to also move the sound around to match it up, so it does overall create a lot longer edit

Daniel > Sorry to ask you a question off topic but when you shoot for a project, say a real estate home or a resort, for about 6-8 hrs. How many hours of footage do you shoot (say if the end video was going to be a 2 minute promo webmercial) and how long do you take to edit that after the shoot day. Your inputs will be very helpful.
@danielschiffer
@danielschiffer 6 жыл бұрын
I haven't taken video of a resort, but when I do houses I'm generally on location for 1.5-2 hours, and it takes me 30 minutes to edit when I get home for same-day turnaround. In terms of actual footage- I'm not sure how much I actually shoot- I usually get 2 or 3 shots of every room- each lasting about 8 seconds then cut down in post.
@mgr5550
@mgr5550 6 жыл бұрын
Whaaaat ??? You shoot maybe a 6 bedroom house in just 2 hours ? Kudos ! and just 30 minute to edit ? But with all due respect Daniel, wont the NLE proxy building (for 4k) itself take about 1 hour ? And you give them a simple cut kind of video i assume because color grading etc takes more time right ?
@danielschiffer
@danielschiffer 6 жыл бұрын
6 bedroom would take a little bit longer - here in Toronto the average is 3-4 bedrooms and sometimes I do condos which only take 45 minutes for me to show up, shoot and leave. Yes, editing is super fast because I have done it 100's of times and it's very cookie cutter. I never over-shoot- I get exactly what I need, dump the footage in my timeline and chop it up to the beat of a song, pre-chosen from a list of about 10 that I cycle through for real estate videos. I add a cross dissolve to the start and end of the video and maybe some text at the beginning- followed by a super quick grade. Also I don't edit proxies, I edit the 4k source Apple ProRes 422 clips directly in FCPX. I don't do as much real estate stuff these days but there was a point where I was doing anywhere from 5-10 listings every week so I had to work very fast. My rates were extremely affordable and I offered a really basic, yet high-quality product which realtors were really happy with. They don't care about all the bells and whistles- they wanted a clean video that looked professional and they wanted it as quickly as possible- hence the same day turnaround. I'll also add that if you're doing 6 bedroom luxury homes, it's an entirely different product your'e producing. My videos weren't intended to sell houses- they sell the realtors services. Here in Toronto you can list anything and it will sell, the market is ridiculous over here.

For those of us here in the UK most models available with 4k will only shoot 25fps or 24fps. Only a few PAL cameras with 4k let you shoot in 30fps which is annoying.

This is really interesting! Definitely makes a difference. Would make shooting music videos a nightmare though! I guess you could play the music on set at 1.25x and have the artist mime at that speed, then slow the footage to 80% and use the original music in the final video?
@danielschiffer
@danielschiffer 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, definitely do not use this technique for any footage that has talking, audio, or lip syncing (music videos). If you were to use this in a music video, you'd want to the artist to mime the lyrics at 1.25x speed just like you said.
@lorimermacandrew
@lorimermacandrew 6 жыл бұрын
Papo You film for 80% slow motion as Daniel recommends, and play the music at 1.25x speed for the artist to mime to. 1.25 * 0.8 = 1 so it works out :)
