I've learned a trick or two with my Mr. Coffee Maker too. I've heard that the first few "drips" out of the internal nozzle are too cold and that the whole pot can be under extracted as a result. So, I have a Mr. Coffee Maker with a drip arm that swings out of the way. Before I close the lid, I swing the spout away from the coffee basket and direct the first few spurts back into the reservoir. This allows it to throw back the first few colder shots back into the reservoir for recycling. My coffee maker also comes with a stopper that prevents coffee from running out of the machine if the coffee pot (carafe) isn't present. This is how I "bloom" the coffee grounds. So, with the coffee pot out of the machine, I swing the internal spout back over the dry coffee grounds in the basket and close the lid. The water pours into the basket but it does not come out because the pot is not in place. After about a minute or so, I place the pot (carafe) onto the burner, which unstops the mechanism, allowing the coffee (now well bloomed) to empty into the carafe. This delicate dance works pretty well. I use an espresso grind, which I think tastes richer than the standard grind. I also use bottled spring water rather than tap water because God only knows what the municipal water supply is polluted with. I mean, it looks clean but with all the chlorine and fluoride they dump in that crap, it's a wonder we can safely bathe in the stuff.

I was actually thinking about that today. Turning it off and letting it bloom for a while and then on again. Two thoughts though. One is, each cup either in the carafe or on the maker itself, as I tested, is only 4 oz. A mug, filled to brim, to my surprise, is 16 oz. Or 12 oz to make room for cream and such. I think the 4 oz measure was based on those small cups in a fancy China set. So considering using 4 tbpn for 12 oz, essentially, you are making one cup of coffee. If you have two people and two cups per morning each, that's about 12 cups. So that would mean you would need 16 tbspn of coffee for 4 cups. Now that would be an expensive 4 big cups of coffee.

I prefer cold brew in the summer. First, I grind my beans to a medium coarseness, and then put in a little hot water and let it sit for the infusion process. After about 30 sec to a minute, I stir it to crack the crust, put in the cold water, and then let it sit in the fridge for about 24 hours before drinking. I have tried all of The Morning Movement Coffees, except intuition- I didn’t make it in time, and my favorite has been Dreamland. It’s beautiful brewed hot in the French press, but as a cold brew, it’s amazing. I have truly enjoyed your specialty roasts and instructional videos for enjoying it at its finest! You guys rock!! 💗☕️

This video changed my morning pleasure. I have a simple one cup camping style drip cone. This method suits my single life in a tiny home/kitchen - fulltime vanlife. I was not enjoying my coffee at all any more. A few sips then dump it out. When I remember to rinse the filter. My coffee is so much better. I drink the whole cup. Thank you so much. As much as I'd like to I doubt I will get to the roasterrie in Panama. I am determined to visit Newfoundland Canada. My journey will include many pitstops along the way and will take about five months from British Columbia. My planned route includes a cup of coffee in Stow Vermont.

Best advice ever. I've been experimenting with percolators and percolated coffee because it's actually boiling the coffee causes it to have a bitter flavor. So percolated coffee is probably the worst choice. Drip coffee using this method works really well. The secret ingredient was using 10 g of coffee for every cup. I brew four cups of coffee and I used this method and 40 g of coffee and it tasted perfect. Thanks so much for the great advice.

1: Use the tapered filter machine (Melitta type). 2: Heat some water apart (like in one of those hot pots). Stop it shy of boiling (about 175°F). 3: With the carafe out of the machine, Pour the water lovingly over the grounds in the machine. Just enough to wet all the grounds. 4: Carefully adjust filter position, centered, sides straight and opened. 5: Pour more water into the grounds, off to one side, this time fast enough to get the grounds mixing. Stop about an inch from the top. 6: Let sit five minutes. Meanwhile, fill carafe with appropriate amount of cold water then put that into the machine reservoir. Close the lid. 7: When time is up, turn on machine. When it commences to drop hot water on the grounds, then quickly and precisely insert the carafe into the machine. 8: When it finishes dumping all the water, turn off the machine. 9: Enjoy the coffee! -- For a little tweak, try adding a drop or two of pure vanilla bean extract at step 3.

Grinder. grinder, grinder! The importance of a good burr grinder ***cannot*** be overstated. The cheap whirly-bird grinders are the worst. But after that, a plastic V60 is so cheap and makes great coffee. I used MR Coffee for over 40 years until I purchase my Breville Precision. The biggest problem with Mr Coffee it can not get the temp hot enough for drip coffee. I had two of them and the most I ever got was less than 180 degrees. We all know it has to be at least 195 to 205 degrees. I even when brewing with my Mr Coffee, I would use the wire basket and rotate the basket a full turn allowing the coffee to bloom while the machine was adding the water over the coffee. But, for the most that don't know about coffee or don't care, Mr Coffee is a very good machine for the out the door drinker.

You know, i'm kinda surprised there seemingly aren't any coffee machines that have this sort of thing built in. Like how a toaster has a dial to let you choose how done your toast is, a coffee machine could have a dial to adjust how much coffee you're brewing. This then tells the brewer how long to do the initial pour, before stopping and starting a 30-40 second timer, before continuing with the rest of the brew. Even if there's no good mechanical system to do this, it wouldn't take much electronics or programming to make it work. Plus for fancier, more expensive models, i'm sure there's ways that it could automatically detect how much coffee and/or water is loaded into the machine, to then determine the timings of everything.

@rhymeswithteeth
@rhymeswithteeth Жыл бұрын
If you're shopping for a drip machine: #1.) Be sure to check the size of the showerhead. You want a machine that has a large showerhead so that the coffee grounds get thoroughly saturated during the brewing process. #2.) When you get a drip machine home, run some water through the machine and, using a digital probe thermometer (like the one you use to check the internal temperature of meat), place the probe between the bottom of the basket and the top pf the carafe to see what kind of water temperature your machine is producing. Ideally, you want a water temperature of between 195 and 205. (If you're unable to get the probe in between the basket and the carafe, take the temp of the water as it's filling the carafe. Expect the water in the carafe to be only slightly cooler than it would be if you took the temp between the basket and the carafe.) If the machine you've purchased isn't achieving a water temp between 195 and 205, return it and try another machine. (I've returned several.) #3.) A faster brew time is better than a slower brew time. A faster brew time to make a full pot indicates that the machine is pumping a greater volume of water than a machine that takes longer to brew a full pot. With a greater water flow, you'll get better flooding of the coffee grounds and, therefor, more complete saturation and more thorough extraction.

I am pretty sensitive to caffeine and have to drink half caff but it's really hard to find decaf coffee beans. I'd really prefer to grind my own for fresher coffee. Do you have any suggestions for where to find good decaf beans? Thank you!

Do you not use a coffee filter inside the basket? I know the basket is quite fine and should do the trick, I've just always seen people also use a coffee filter inside that basket as well. 🤷🏻‍♂️
