It is based in lithomancy. There is a really good book: Lithomancy by Gary L Wimmer that goes into good detail. I hope this helps!

I’ve never seen a crystal reading. Amazing! Is it similar to tarot, in that you understand the meaning but your intuition pulls more from the interpretation? Curious.

Yes, it is similar to tarot. each stone has a property/meaning and the position on the mat shows its position to past, present, future along with its relevance to the now. its called lithomancy.
