I was fortunate enough to borrow the new Fuji GFX 50R from Midwest Photo for the last week and I've gotta admit, I really enjoyed shooting with it. Today, I'm sharing a quick overview of the camera and what my experience with it was like. I'll also be showing some of my favorite photos I made with it over the last week.

Great review and insight. I also am unfortunately not in the position to budget for a gfx50r and lens(es). But, if Fujifilm dishes out new models as frequently as they seem to do, it won't be long till we see maybe a gfx50r2 or something like that.. Whatever the next version is.. And, maybe then the price on a gfx50r will likely drop to a more affordable level. Thanks again. For sharing your experience with the gfx50r. And, have a great and happy holidays.

Matt, Thanks nice overall summary. Know its hard to get into much detail about the camera, functions, shooting modes & ratios. (maybe next time) Learned & started my photog career many years ago using medium format film cameras. Once you see the quality, its hard to go back to any other format. (Though for events, sports, and general use smaller dslr way to go ) And the price point for the 50R that quality for $5K or less... "no brainer" ! Its def a niche market but if you are serious photographer and serious about your digital files and the quality of your work...then you should consider making the transition to a digital medium format and Fuji 50R would be my choice. Best in 2019!

Matt, I have my first child coming in Dec. if I could have this or a Leica M240 to document his early years what do you think would be the smartest choice? This isn't related to the 50R only, but I find I really like the Rangefinder layout. Not because of the mystique of the image you can capture with it, or anything like that, it's just that my nose isn't bumping into the camera like it generally does with an SLR arrangement. Almost for that reason alone I would probably go with this model if I was going to purchase one.

I don't like that the GFX 50R and GFX50S deliver 14bit raw photos instead of 16bit raw like most other digital medium format cameras. With 16bit raw you can adjust more the dynamic range with Lightroom. Nevertheless the GFX50R is a very small, light and cheap digital medium format camera. Of course what is small, light and cheap is relative to sensor size.

@mattdayphoto
@mattdayphoto 5 жыл бұрын
James Climaco Man, that’s tough. The TX-1 is a very specific use kind of camera, in my opinion. Panorama isn’t as versatile as a 3:2 or 4:3 ratio. I might go for the 50R over that..
@RadekDrozdalski
@RadekDrozdalski 5 жыл бұрын
James, I know your pain. I got 50R as a digital Xpan replacement (have Xpan 2 and not really looking to get rid of it anytime soon). I know people are RAW fanatics, but I shoot with Jpeg - minimizing need for post processing and having a bit of the film feel. Fuji film simulations are great fit for that (usually Provia at night) and mostly manual lenses (Xpan lenses fit the GFX great, but you can adapt pretty much any lens you can imagine including medium format glass [Bronica ETRS lenses are not expensive at all]). I also use the 65:24 crop mode to have the Xpan pano feel and this is currently one of the very few cameras on the market that offers 25 megapixel jpegs in this format (was considering Sony A7RIII, but it does not have crop mode in live view like 50R does and sensor is a bit smaller. No idea if this helps you in any way to make a decision, Xpans are really climbing in price as of late, and maybe it's worth it to take advantage of that? In any case good luck!
@jamesclimaco5219
@jamesclimaco5219 5 жыл бұрын
@@RadekDrozdalski This helped me more than you can imagine. I had no idea that the GFX had crop mode in live view, and in 65:24 for that matter. And adapting the Xpan lenses to the GFX never came to mind, what a great idea. I wonder about the Xpan 45mm f4 vs the GF 45mm f2.8 in terms of image quality though. It would be nice to hang on to the Xpan glass at least especially if it produces good image quality. With all that said, common sense weighs in favor of the GFX, but I'm still torn about pulling the trigger and getting rid of the Xpan body...I have a love/hate relationship with developing and scanning film but I keep coming back to it for some reason. =P
@RadekDrozdalski
@RadekDrozdalski 5 жыл бұрын
@@jamesclimaco5219 Excellent! GFX (and all other mirrorless cameras) allow for adapting pretty much and lens you can imagine. G mount is quite new, so there aren't as many adapters for it, as for example Sony E or Fuji X mounts, but still there is plenty options to go around. If you want to go this route - adapting manual lenses on GFX to get a different experience - keep in mind that there are a lot of manufacturers out there and adapters differ in quality. Sometimes even between samples form the same one. It all depends on their accuracy and as the old saying goes you get what you pay for (but even that sometimes is not true). You will get by with a $40 adapter, but it might not focus to infinity, or will focus even past infinity. Some people do not mind that, some do - it comes down to how much are you willing to work around by using the cheap options. Granted I have not tried any of the higher priced ones (Kipon, Novoflex or Rayqual) but in my experience K&F Koncept ones have a bit of play to them once mounted on the body, Fotodiox are better in that regard, but still my samples focus past infinity (same "issue" with K&F). I tested a lot of Nikon and C/Y lenses on GFX in Xpan crop mode and vignette is pretty much non existent (for regular to wide primes, have not got a chance to test tele ones yet). But 45mm Minolta f2 pancake SLR lens and adapter should not set you back more than 70$, and will allow you to get a similar magnification to Xpan 45mm lens mounted on GFX (their FOV also should be the same). Keep in mind that GFX sensor is big (for digital camera) but nowhere near as wide as actual Xpan opening (or even 645 medium format) is. As for GF lenses - they are focus by wire, so they are not as accurate in that regard as a manual counterparts. Still you can use back button autofocus / critical focus with focusing ring at 10x magnification technique with decent results. It all depends on your style of shooting and your needs. GFX is not a sports / wildlife camera, but I have been using it at night hand held with satisfying (for me at least) results and printing 32x12 inch Epson prints straight out of jpegs shot on it.

After rumors of rangefinder-style medium format from Fuji, I was hyped. But after release I have mixed feelings, in comparison to Hasselblad, it looks like a brick. IQ isn't that different from FF, this sensor is the smallest one used in medium format, FF is 60% of its size and if you prefer 3/2 crop (I do) difference is even smaller. In compare, APSC is 40% of FF. So pass from me :/ (still excellent camera :)

Plenty of other manufacturers have been utilizing sensors of the same size in their cameras and calling it medium format, I don't see why it should be any different when it's Fujifilm doing it..

Thanks for the reply Matt. I ask that question because, although I use digital cameras (currently canon markIII) for other things, I have been using my Pextax 67ii since 1998 for my night architecture photography using positive film like Provia 100f which gives a more natural look vs digital at night. Digital gives a more HDR type look, which on print i'm not to fond of. So, I was thinking a higher pixel camera like this Fuji, might do the job, so I could finally put my Pextax 67 to rest, seeing there are not many labs left to develop my positive film, and seeing I no longer have excess to an imacon scanner that I was using free for the past 9yrs, I need to find a digital camera that might do the job. So, any input would be great, Thanks, I enjoy your videos

@@jt4369 if a 44x33mm sensor camera with a lof ot bells and whistles can cost $4000, then why not a photography focused, no video, modestly featured 54x41mm sensor for 5000-6000?

i have a brick/cinderblock of a camera as well...There was no 'uproar' about card slots.It was just defensive posturing from those who bought those overpriced crippled,one card slotted mirrorless full frame cameras.I mean really,that's like removing one door from a sedan and trying to convince people it's ok.The proof of that is,you will see that silly decision corrected in the next models...When I delve into medium format,the 50R is in my sights...

Enjoy your videos. Thanks. A side by side comparison of files with the X-T3 would have been interesting. How big is that medium format advantage over a really nice ASP-C sensor? No pixel peeping!

Thank you! I wish I would have had more time to go out and shoot side by side with both cameras and the same scene, but the week just flew by. Pixel peeping you could definitely see a difference, but in real world use, is there a HUGE advantage? That's tough. For most people, probably not.

not sure why you keep saying it's comically large, and a big brick... for a medium format digital camera, that thing is TINY. It's smaller than canon and nikon's DSLR full frame options. (or at least the same ballpark... certainly looks slimmer back to front).

Hey Matt, great Video. But one thing. Is it possible that your mic is broken? Or maybe your audio settings are messed up. I am listening with a good pair of cans and the audio is overmodulating. Especially when your voice gets a little louder. Keep up and greetings from Germany.

I have seen some +70k shot X-T2s with well functioning joysticks. They get a bit softer over time, but also faster. Granted, that's my biggest concern on durability as well, as the lack of the D-pad increases the use of the joystick. And although Fuji's joystick is physically different looking outside, it is likely the exact same component beneath that other manufacturers use.

Compeltely new to Fuji digital big format. So, I don't even know if it shoots tiffs, or jpeg FIne and Raw, etc. I really wish Fuji would let you shoot uncompressed tiffs that maintained the great jpeg qualities the cameras have. I really don't need raw.

There are regional differences. On the East Coast, the beard tends to be shorter, there's horn rimmed glasses involved, and as you travel west, camera bags change from nylon to leather. There is some research to be done about the North-South axis and earrings, but my studies are as yet incomplete on that subject.

The build quality of the GFX50R is not that amazing. Cheap flaps on the bottom that don‘t really want to get in place back again, very flush buttons with almost no pressure point, a back dial with a stupid press-in function that feels strange to me and stupid button placement of most of the buttons on the back of the camera. Other than the awful build quality and ergonomics it is surely a nice camera especially for this super low pricepoint. The viewfinder gets super laggy when shooting the camera in RAW as the processor is not able to handle the data. You get what you pay for, a consumer grade compact JPG medium format system for a nice price. It is great for traveling. Coming from the Leica M8/M9, Hasselblad H3DII and Nikon D4 I might snag one when the used prices will drop under a thousand bucks (hopefully the bodies will survive until that happens).
