So, it's been a year officially since I moved here to Puerto Rico, and I’m a guy and I’m not that hard to please; but there are a few things that I wish I knew before coming here. And I’m going to tell you the good and ugly and that normal.
And you might be watching this video because you want to come down to Puerto Rico to save money on taxes, or to live a better quality of life or maybe you just want to come here. This video is for you

1. First of All this is an Island ( which sounds sexy but its really not that sexy )
-Think about it when you think about living in an island you think about
-Things being cheap, going to the beach everyday and going to eat all the time
-But you forget that literally this is spec of dirt surrounded by a body of water, and you forget about logistics ( btw I was born on a little bigger piece of dirt called Dominican republic, and I love it, I don’t mean it in an offensive way )
Food:
-The food here is not amazing or special, it’s the people that are special and amazing and they cook with so much love
-But about 80% of all the food is imported from other places
-So that leads food being a little more expensive ( a lot more expensive )
Cars, Gas and Insurance:
-all this stuff is more expensive, because you have to consider how much more overhead is involved in getting these things here( except for insurance I pay like $150-200 a year and get a marbete which cover like 3k in damangers I think or something like that )
Sale Tax:
-you ever got a paycheck and was like where is the rest of the money and realize it goes to social security and taxes
-well here when you buy something and see that they charged you an extra 11.5% between sales tax and miniciple tax, you realized that things can very expensive
The roads:
-people complain about potholes and I’ve had a tired completely destroyed by a pothole
-but honestly it's not as bad as you think, once you know where they are you know how to avoid them and after a while they get fixed
-but remember Rain, Hot Sun and a lot of traffic equal pot holes
The electricity:
-I went three days without electricity when one of the power factories blew up, think about that 3 days no electricity and no generator
-Omg, the worst part is just that your food go’s bad but if you buy a good generator you will be fine
-And I can count on one hand and one foot the amount of times we lost power is not that bad
Marketing:
-people love new cars here
-people love solar panels here
-a lot of people are not financially educated honestly and that the entire world
2. The Good this Island ( really wants to grow and to prosper and you can tell )
First the people are amazing:
-I’ve made around 5-8 friends in one year, because I’m an introvert and I don’t really like places
-But these people are quality people
Tax incentives to do something:
-You buy a house and its your first one, you pay no property taxes
-You can start a business and save money on taxes
-You can buy a home and get a grant
-You can see a bunch hiring signs
Properties Here are Still Cheap
-You can buy a dilapidated home for 50-90k and fix it up and easily be in for 0
3. Overall if you ask me, know what I know today ( would I move here )
-A lot of good has happened to me while I’ve been here Not because of Puerto rico but because of decisions I’ve made

Tommy, the whole reason everything is expensive in Puerto Rico is because the 1920 Jones Act, it requires all goods shipped between U.S. ports to be transported by U.S. vessels. So, if there is a shipment coming from Europe to Puerto Rico, it has to go to Jacksonville, Florida to offload their cargo so a US vessel can transport it to Puerto Rico. If that law was lifted, PR can receive shipments directly from any country, thus making the goods prices cheaper. Just to tell you how sick is that law that after the hurricane in 2017, Panama sent a humanitarian ship with water and food directly to PR, but because it didn't go thru Jacksonville, Florida; the whole cargo was discarded and lost. The whole reason why the USA is not lifting that restriction is so Puerto Rico don't become a power island in the middle of the Atlantic, which a very strategy point in the Caribbean. Only thing that can fix that is for the congress to remove that restriction, or the island becomes independent.

The Jones Act doesn’t exist to keep PR from becoming a powerhouse. It exists bc states like FL and CA are benefited by it. Jones Act is also not “the whole reason everything is expensive.” It’s one factor. Most islands are expensive. PR doesn’t produce enough energy, food, or manufactured goods for all local consumption. Like most islands. So they have to import and pay extra. People really have some wild conspiracy theories and victim complexes.

I totally disagree. That is just another scapegoat excuse used in Puerto Rico and the Pro Independentista movement drilling lies on people. The Jones Act applies to all Coastal States and Puerto Rico and by the way. United States had 8 territories.

If they are so warm welcoming and respectful, why does Puerto Rico have by far the highest homicide rate of any of 50 states, why does every home have to have bars on the windows to protect them from those wonderful neighbors?and what are they drive so violently that they have the highest vehicle fatality rate per mile driven of any of the 50 states. I appreciate this video! I think we should also be pushing proper respect to places like this. With everyone wanting to be a “digital nomad” or fleeing whatever community wasn’t enough for them. When you move to a new community you have no roots in, you should come prepared to contribute to community beyond your shopping. it’s not suppose to be built for your convenience. I’ll go further and say it’s best to go to these communities ready to align with what your neighbors need and not just your convenience. We in the West (lesser traveled) tend to go places with skewed view of what community means in other places.

Just spent a week in Rio Grande right by Playa Las Picuas Beach and absolutely fell in love with the island and it's people. I'm from the South in the US, so we can relate to island time, heat, humidity, mosquitos, etc. From the people's hospitality, the terrain, lifestyle, etc, I really felt like I was back home in the foothills of East Tennessee, except it was tropical and there were Beaches. I absolutely love PR and could totally see myself living there one day. The only thing I regret is not knowing Spanish, but most people there are bilingual so it was absolutely not an issue. If I ever move there though, I will definitely learn Spanish out of respect for the PR people.

Over the past 20 years I've done that 4 times making $860k tax free. Crime is high but is usually between drug cartels, unless you get involved. Town's usually have a few thieves. There's a huge underground economy, people hustle alot. There are good universities and trade schools. Locals are cool with visitors as long as you are respectful. Prices have been rising on everything but that s not a problem unique to here. But it's very different now than 20 years ago.

Basically, there are no doctors on the island - that's the most concise way to put it. You will wait for months for an appointment, and then go at 7 am to your agreed appointment where they will make you wait sitting on an uncomfortable chair until 4 pm and the doctor will talk to you for less than 10 minutes. Most local doctors have fled the island as it's near impossible to have modern-day amenities...power (and thus internet) and water can go out several times a week and it is not uncommon for some neighborhoods to go without for weeks or even months at a time. In addition, there is a growing anti-foreigner/gringo sentiment at the moment due to a a recent boom in newcomers and the housing crisis this (along with airbnb) has generated. I tried living there but had to leave…was harassed on the streets just for how I look (didn't pass as puerto rican you could say)...my partner did look puerto rican but some people would become offensive as soon as he spoke and it became obvious that he wasn't. The last straw was waking up to some really disgusting, hateful graffitti on our house one morning. We had our home broken into as well, and this was in a controlled-accessed 'urbanizacion' as they call it. Honestly, I found the whole thing to be kind of like a scam. Many blogs/youtube channel will paint a perfect picture of PR because there is a lot of money now to be made with relocation/tax/legal advice service companies with the tax incentives....so you really have to dig to find what's it's really like to live there - and as I found out, it's just not worth it.

Cars don't retain their value there more. They are more expensive because its costs $3k to ship them there, and another 18% import tax has to be paid on the value of the car before the shipping port releases the car to you. THAT'S why they are more expensive there.

I live here in PR too. I found that costco food prices are very similar to the mainland. PR has extremely fertile land so I can't understand why they just don't grow their own food. Gas is substantially cheaper than California where I came from.

Growing food. Ive been planting fruit trees for years here in PR. It is TIME CONSUMING. You need to love growing to supply yourself and family with enough supplemental fruits. Ive been creating a model farm to encourage people to consider growing. Even 2 or 3 or 6 fruit bearing trees can add so much to your eating experience. Trees are beautiful and serve many purposes. For example, neem, for air filtration, wind, bees and much more. Puerto Rico COULD be one huge garden of delights. Many hands make small work. More self sufficiency and less reliance on imports. .

@@amgooderRight! And we need to think FUTURE not just money. I'm thrilled knowing that my trees could go on to feed people fot decades, long after ive turned into compost myself! To inspire planting, i suggest planting a tree for each child in the family. This would increase the overall number of trees by 1000s and children take a personal interest in "their" tree. Because of the Jones (Act) or consent Decreed, Puerto Rico is highly taxed by Congress. Puerto Rican families pay over 1.6 billion dollars each year to the USA in cobatage fees alone; moreover, Puerto Rico also pays State Taxes, unemployment taxes, and Social Security taxes to the federal government. It is a win, win to the federal government. The federal programs, such as HUD housing, military stores, military bases, both federal airline passenger and cargo airlines, postal offices sales and goods, are all tax exempt in Puerto Rico, and Don't pay any taxes to the Puerto Rican government. Colonialism/ being a US colony has kept Puerto Rico as the poorest us territory. Why all these outsiders don't talk about these things? On these channels.

A major part of the import problem with PR is the Johnson act which the U.S. put upon the island around 1916 by Woodrow Wilson, everything must come from the U.S. which doesn't allow Puerto Rico to seek cheaper imports from south America etc.

That is correct and important in the narrative. I find it fascinating how some visitors are inclined to present heavy objections to living in the island because products and services are expensive as compared to other locations. Maybe it is the case that Puerto Rico is well , how can I put it , not for everyone. Indeed it is an imperative to understand global logistics and historical antecedents before categorizing Puerto Rico as shall we say unremarkable.

Real Estate is getting rough, I live in a place where many houses were around the 500k range. After a couple mainlanders moved in, they started getting in to the Million dollar range. It is not looking good for locals rn. Many people report having received open checkbooks for their properties. And a lot of investors are coming in for the tax breaks and buying out areas where locals can’t even afford housing anymore. Although it is good that people are coming in, the downside is that it is not looking good for the people who want to live here for the rest of their lives.

There's a saying... If you can make it the first year without snapping and/or exploding because of the lifestyle that's here and the fact it's nothing like the lifestyle that you're used to up in the states then you might make it. Now if you can make it 3 years then buy a home. but to buy one right off the bat is a huge mistake. I can't tell you how many people I have seen come here spend a ton of money and then leave just a year or so later in anger because I couldn't handle the lifestyle. I've been here 14 years as a contractor doing construction I used to love doing construction now I can't stand it so now I'm doing something different just keep on going in paradise. And one last word of advice... if you have a drug or alcohol problem this is the last place you want to come to... Puerto Rico is a party Island!

I once went for a month and lived 2 years on the island. Things worked out amazingly. Then things started changing. Taxes jumped from 7 to 11.5. Crazy! Brought a car and the roads were so bad. The sidewalks do not align with the street so it destroys car. AND NO WAY in hell the roads are better than NYC. Wrong! But yes, the reality of things, such as groceries. Things I could not get. Post 2020, things are worse. Especially now that Americans have invaded the island AGAIN, and bought al the property for AIRBNBs, tax free. It has destroyed what I used to call paradise. The island has gotten hit again and again. The People is the thing that make this place heaven along with the weather. Now it's just unaffordable. I don't even want to talk about the healthcare there. And I am someone who loves this island so much. I have fundraised for the locals in bad times, so I am not here to bash the island. It's just realistic.
