Why I’m Leaving Puerto Rico After 1 Year

So I’m leaving Puerto Rico after about a year now, and I’m going to go into details about everything. But for those that don’t know I came to Puerto rico under a tax incentive, and the idea is to bring more money to Puerto rico, and to have people to invest in Puerto rico, hire people and spend money. I did all those things, I bought real estate, I employed someone, and I spent a lot of money here and I also became a part of the community ( my church ).
I like it here, the quality of life is 10x better than in the US, it’s more affordable and the people here are amazing, at least the people I’ve mean, you’ll always find a butt face wherever you go.
However I went to Florida earlier this year and my plans kind of fell through and I ended hanging out with some old people that meant on this app called Meetup, now obviously they are a lot older than me, but I have a lot more in common with them than I do with the average person my age. I can literally retire today and never have to work again and I can live wherever I want. Now there was very common person that I mean, they were snowbirds, it’s a bird that moves to warmer weather during the winter, they can live one place for 6 months and in another place for 6 months. Some do it to save money and taxes and some do it for quality of life.
So I’ve decided that’s what I want to do for now.

1. Here is what I want you To learn from this video
75k Rule: it was study that showed that past making 75k a year, it doesn’t really add more happiness to your life, and when I was making minimum wage, the only thing I wanted to do was find that out for myself.
Quality of Life: To me a Good life is life of healthy mixture of daily challenges, and being around people that you love. Here in Puerto Rico I have only two family members which are women, and past the age of 60.
Always think Both: I read that in a book years ago, secrets of the mind of a millionaires, millionaires always think both, you see I can stay in Puerto Rico full time or half time and still get the same results and be happier.
2. Where I’m Going and Why plus Money
So I’m going back home, I’ve never been home since I was about 6 years old
I’ve always lived abroad and I thank abroad for all the opportunities and all the great people
However theirs something different about being home
So here are the details:
I’m going back to Dominican Republic and I’ll be staying for half the year
My entire family is their and people that I don’t know know me and my family
I feel at home at home
Money wise will this be more expensive
No it won't be
My only cost are going to be Utilities, groceries and transportation ( thankfully my mom already owns a home ) and she stays in New York so I can stay their
So perspective wise, I’ll actually save money while being their
3. What about Work, Puerto Rican Assets and Your friend here
The good thing about my job which is to be a teacher of complex money topics and help anyone understand it, is that I can do it from anywhere in the world, just need internet and camera
My home in Puerto Rico, I’ll most likely put it on Airbnb for half the year, while I’m gone so the house can stay in USE
Friend here are very understanding, they understand that their a big correlation between quality of life and happiness and happiness for the most part has to do with GOD first and Relationships second

I am from DR and I am building my house there in a small town Where I was raised till I came to NY living in New York has taught me a lot including that sometimes living with less but a more quite and peaceful life without much stress it’s something that bring joy to me! I can’t catch a break here in New York, car tickets, no parking, working all day everyday to meet end needs, running around omg this way of living is not beneficial for a healthy living! Thanks for the video 🙏🏽❤️

DR it makes a lot of sense young sir! A wise man was once heard say, “I know how to get everything I want out of life”. And when he was asked to expand on that point he said, “Simply help someone else get everything they want out of life”. Your desire to to provide value to people means that you will always be well taken care of. Great video!

🇩🇴DR🇩🇴 Thank you Tommy for this video. The biggest idea that I got from it was try things in life. If you don’t like it you can change it. For example you said you thought about living there until you are 30, but then you changed your mind after about a year of living there then you can just change your plans. That’s fine if you don’t like something, change it you have to stick with it forever. Especially as you said you never know how much time you have left so make the most of the time you have. Great video Tommy! 👍🏾

The one thing that I have noticed is that PR is a jewel and naturally a beautiful Island in the Caribbean. And also that Americans from PR and the ones that live there are proud of their Island, Culture and history, and rightly so. But yet, most of all, I noticed all the litter, filth and garbage all over much of the island. What is that all about? I wld be embarrassed. WHAT GIVES? We wld volunteer to clean up, get it all nice, and than in 2 days, we wld go bk, and there wld be litter all over the place again.

Awesome video and such a great thought process and defined intentions 👍🏻 A few things I would add to your suggestions are that if someone owns their own vehicle they can sell it and purchase a small RV or camper to live in as you can find friends anywhere who would be happy to let you use their electric connection and will watch your stuff or keep it in their own garage/storage while you're gone There are so many options of great countries and languages to learn by living in a community (helping to run or promote businesses, farming & agriculture work, as well as the many new businesses that one just naturally comes onto whenever new relationships with like minded people are nurtured, The issue most people get bogged down with is that they need to stay in a specific job or work in an industry they have already established themselves in and that just isn't true and when moving sometimes one of the most detrimental hang-ups that keep people from overcoming and leaning to grow those previously neglected talents or long forgotten goals that even the most menial tasks done with all of your heart ❤️ can spark a memory of, like that dream you had when you were young to be a pilot (starting small by putting some hours in on a Paramotor rental or taking flight lessons) or that thing your mom, dad, grandmother or friends keep saying you're so good at but you're keeping yourself from taking the next step just to simply save up for that musical instrument and join the band that keeps asking you to come play on the weekends at parties with them... And all that we do the forefront of our thoughts should be that others are on a journey just like we are and when we see their inadequacies and joined together as a team to help them instead of mentioning it to them in passing or gossiping about it with others like happens so oftentimes now-a-days, together we will fit like a wonderful 🧩 puzzle piece into the Kaleidoscope of warming light into the ♾️ eternity we are destined for! 💛🧡💚🤍💗 🙏🇩🇴D.R.🇩🇴 🙌🏻☝🏻🤜🏾🤛🏼

Oh man, I would love to move to the DR now, good luck on your move. One thing though, the DR is not known for stellar high speed internet with the exception of New builds in Santo Domingo so check around and also stock up on your techie gear in PR, before you move. Stuff like this is limited and if you buy in the DR comes with a hefty import tax attached.

Great video and DR. I kind of do the same thing. I never heard of the $75,000 idea until now and I agree. Never really thought of that but I surpassed that number 24 years ago and it hasn't made me any happier. What I have done to spice life up is move every couple of years. Moving sucks yes but moving to different areas of San Antonio and now outside of San Antonio has made our life fun and interesting. Meeting new people. Experiencing new places etc. I'm in Rotary Club so new towns mean new opportunities to help the community I live in. Our next move in a year or so is going to be a move to Downtown Corpus Christi. I'm from there but now the Downtown has a nightlife and has new condos etc and all new experiences. Our family doesn't quite get it but it's what adds some fun and happiness to my wife and my life. Thanks again brother!

The tax incentive was made to displace the Puerto Rican on the island and make it so they have to leave and be assimilated, in the States where they will become more Anglo and lose their Hispanic culture and language. That's the plan and to some extent, it's working!

Does that $75000 statistic still hold true for folks living in NYC? I always feel like I’d have a better quality of life if I was making more money.

Exactly. And the $$$ from the study I read was $150k year was the “magic” number. And that was published at least 10yrs ago. Basically ppl want to be upper middle class. But most of those incomes are from jobs that require 50+ hrs/week (and higher stress) including business owner).

Hey bro Huge fan here! A little of advice in anyway possible because you like to help others and also me too. Okay I was born in Miami and I’m 39 now but after 11 years old my parents decided to move to Puerto Rico so I was raised 100% and Puerto Rico but do have family in Dominic Republic on my mom’s family but be careful in your decisions because even if you were born in your country you are use to any or all Americans system and life since you were raised in the states and the your country the economy and money are very different and you will be the only American living like an American life in that country and no one has lived or is living obviously and if you have house’s or homes in the states and in Puerto Rico put them to rent definitely because your source of income can help you raise your goals in anyway possible because in the your country life is not easy and it’s not an American life neither so be extra careful. Blessings and be safe anywhere!!

Sorry that you're leaving. I'll be leaving Tokyo next year (OK, early 2024). It's been a long haul for me. Great time here. However, I feel also that it's time to move on. Probably will travel a bit throughout SE Asia, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand. I've no desire at all to return to the US except to perhaps visit friends and family.

DR. Always wanted to and am now planning on moving to the D.R. but am not from there, I have researched some places in the middle interior highlands where there is cooler weather and rivers and lakes that I like. Wouldn't I be a victim though as a non-native Spanish speaker that is a foreigner? Please provide your insight as a native Dominicano. Thanx!
