OMG you're a huge inspiration. I just turned 30, i'm a woman and i do animation for a living- I am really fearful of busting up my face and hands. My hands are my career. And I struggle with the embarrassment of being a girl in a skate park, though I know there's a lot of good people. I feel I've had a lot of people offer to teach me to skateboard, but my fear and reluctance has gotten in the way. I am worried to reach an age and look back and feel my chance has passed. Anyway, your progress at 35 is super inspiring. I really hope I can be like you!
@VandKoala3 жыл бұрын
Hi Lauren, thanks for your honest comment. I can tottaly understand your fear. It is always a real risk in the sport to get some injuries. I was there before starting kitesurfing and before I tried bmx at age 30. I don’t even know if it is true, but I have read somewhere on google that football (socer if you are from US :D ) statistically results in many more injuries than skateboarding. I also always wear pads. Wrist guards, helmet, shin guards and even crash shorts underneath my jeans. I believe it reduces the damage. All of this said - you will have to decide for yourself. Everyone that is skating is familiar with fear. It is a really big part of the game. Every time you are about to try a new trick - fear comes up. It does not matter if you are a beginner just hesitating to try or a professional affraid of that huge - being afraid, building your confidence up and then overcoming that fear and being super excited about that is the key driving force of this sport! If you will decide to try it - try it safe, pad-up, find someone experienced in teaching to hold your hand. Learn the basics and don’t do stuff that is over your head, build it up step by step. Now that “girl in a skatepark” thing is just silly :) The truth is - everyone at the skatepark are too busy with them selves. They worry “what will others think about me if I grind makio without a grab” more than a girl in a skatepark. I really doubt you will ever encounter someone telling you anything negative about a girl that skates. And if you will - screw that moron! As an artist you probably know that your style won’t satisfy everyone, nor that it should. Skating is an art - expressing your self through a motion. Similarly, before you develop a certain style you have to learn the basics. A lot of them :) Wish you all the best of luck!

Ive seen others older than that and nobody gives them odd looks. One guy told me to guess how old he was at a park long ago i guessed he was 27 or 28 he said 43 so dont assume your age will matter if anyone does ask say you are doing it for fun and exercise I think best thing is to go with someone else similar age range until you feel comfy.

Such nostalgia for me… I’m 39 and wish I could relive those days in the 90s as a teen in HS… I had some Rollerblade Boxcars… tweaked up w 62mm and 56mm wheels, abec 3 bearings, and grid plates… but alas, split my nuts soul grinding an 8 foot stair case rail. And let’s just say from that day forward I knew I still wanted to have kids… I still recreationally in-line skate and the rinks, but I miss the hardcore days! Great video

Very cool! I'm 42, used to skate aggressive inline back in the 90s, and I'm thinking about getting back into it. My only apprehension is getting hurt, as I'm an artist and can't afford to hurt my hands, wrists and arms, and I also train Tai Chi every day and getting hurt would affect my training too. I also have a back nerve injury from grappling that's healed, but I am worried about re-injuring it again. Watching a lot of skate videos online can be a bit deceiving at times as I mostly see edited clips of people presenting their best attempts, but then I see some people showing how they continually fall and get injured, and then I'm reminded of the fact that injuries are a reality and are typical in this activity... But skating is also so much fun... Ugh, what to do...

That's the spirit mate! @@VandKoala Skateboarding is very hard. Like just doing a 360 on flat is so much work and a solid trick to do on flatground. THIS however leads people to mindlessly start the, "Skateboarding is harder so it deserves more respect." Crap. Skateboarding is so limited. Movement wise you're stuck on the plank and grining handrails is difficult and counter intuitive. Rollerblades were like a perfect fit for grinding PERIOD. People don't talk about the LIMITS of the 2 different disciplines. Skateboard 180s down big gaps are pretty crazy and 360s are crazier. Rollerblades can push PAST that. BOTH are difficult when you start reaching their limits of possibility. Rollerblading is just easier to get started that's the only "easy" think about it. Once you start messing with ANY Topside grinds you can die. Lol SUPER excited to take my skateboarding skills to this.

The basics stuck with me thankfully but it was definitely a process getting my body adjusted to being capable of skating confidently. I'm 36 now and am still at it. I try to push myself as best I can but falling sucks at this age, ha. I'm just glad I'm healthy enough to keep doing something I love and it's important for kids to see people rollerblading. I'm literally 1 of two people who "aggressive" skate in my town. Lots of kids have never seen it before and they get hyped at my small tricks. It's really cool having a group of 12 year old scooter kids getting hyped and congratulating me. These kids are completely unaware of the rivalry from the 90s.

Have you tried a 4x100 setup? Maybe a great balance between big and small? Or do you the 4x90 is close enough?

Hey, do you do the monthly challenge of aggressive inline skating that was set up by Lawrence from backtoblading? I joined recently the "online" community and every month we have to learn/demonstrate a new trick. Here is the link:www.backtoblading.com/community. I've completed 2 challenges so far. Next one to be announced on October 23rd. Join us if you're not already part of it!

This gets ne sooo hyped! I started back in June and have been watching other peoples videos to learn. Blading is so much fun. I also struggle with royales but its only been a month since i started doing them.
@VandKoala4 жыл бұрын
I am so enjoying the fact that there are a lot of people starting blading a bit older than 10 year old :) I am feeling better and better on royales, but many tricks just do not happen quickly. I think that there is something about balance, concious body position, muscle strenght and even joint flexibility that need to adapt to the grind position. Every time I jump for royale I am telling myself to turn the body sideways-shoulders have to face the rail. That was the biggest finding for me and still today it defines if I will land a royale or not more than anything else :) Enjoy the process man and thanks for your comment!
@phillipvelasquez37543 жыл бұрын
I also just got back into it after 16 years of not skating! It feels weird at first and your body definitely isnt the same as it was when we were 16! But baby steps and make small goals for yourself. perhaps on your first day is just to skate around, then the next day, practice jumping, then skating backwards, then dropping in a small ramp, then little grinds. Thats how you progress!!

Sure not the same body, but the same level of fun :)

Well done to you man I take my hat off to you sir! I'm learning to rollerblade at 44 and i know how daunting people watching can feel, especially at a busy skate park! That's the last place you'll find me at the moment. I've never thought of aggressive skating, maybe I'll grab a pair in the years to come. I don't know about you but it's like my legs didn't have any muscles in them other than for walking, jeez there's muscles being used i never knew i had haha 😆👍 well done dude 👊
@VandKoala3 жыл бұрын
Hey man, well done to you starting it at 44! You will rediscover some new muscles :)) Regarding the skateparks - at this age you are legally entitled to not give a F what will the others think :)) when you feel confident on a level ground do try rolling some ramps. It is a great fun! :)

I got into downhill and bmx after 40. I have snowboarded all my life. Actionsports are important to stay fit of mind, maybe not so much body, as both my knees are quite shattered. I have come to realize the pain is just something I have to live with to enjoy flying through the air
@VandKoala3 жыл бұрын
That is true - some pain is here to stay… lifting weights became mandatory for me to be able to do action sports - that aleviates pains. Inline skating can be pretty “easy” on joints if you flow more than drop :)

One trick from an old agressive blader: loosen the skates just a wee bit from the top/cuff (calf area) it will feel strange at the beginning and intimidating, but then you'll catch yourself cruising through tricks easily and adding more to your repertoire with less pain and bruises! And in no time.
