One Year Later - Fire Emblem: Engage

I can’t believe this game exists. Like, what I played I really enjoy, but it’s release felt a little… hollow? Not due to the quality of the game, or even the game itself, but the idea of the game existing felt a little uncanny. You know that feeling when you see the new Pokémon starters for a generation? They feel like fake Pokémon for a couple months, but then they kinda settle into the public conscious. Imagine that feeling, but for an entire game, and it still hasn’t fully settled for me. With the strange way it suddenly released and wrapped up its DLC, I don’t think it was in the public conscious enough to fully settle. Maybe if they released a demo a couple weeks earlier, that would’ve gave it more of a presence. I definitely hope to appreciate the game more, I love the characters and the little gameplay I experienced was fun.

I think the problem with the story is the tone. The individual story beats aren’t technically bad per se, but the game is so melodramatic (especially with the Four Hounds) that it’s hard to get invested.

I think the problem comes in the story being riddled with plot holes and contrivance, while also having the tone you mention. It makes no effort to put you in its characters’ positions or its world because they make no sense, but still expects you to be invested and wastes your time with it

Honestly engages plot is just forgettable bad. IMO FE Fates at least had memorably bad moments in each story route. I can remember Xander being uncharacteristically loyal to Nohr in birthright. I can remember Corrin being incredibly irresponsible in conquering all of Hoshido so Garon could sit on a throne which Corrin was told not shown could reveal Garons true form. Engage has contrived moments in its tale but it feels more bland than memorably bad.

AYO, alright, I personally think Awakening has a better story than engage, not that I dislike Engage's story by any means. The only thing "bad" about it is the kinda thrown in Walhart arc, but theres just too many cool things about Awakening's plot to reaaaaaally place it down there with Engage

I thought the Walhart arc was important for the "resisting fate" theme of the game, and to provide a narrative foil to Emmeryn. Also to give space and time within the story to show that the characters have had a lot of time to grow closer, another theme, and buildup to later events so they don't feel rushed as well as to expand the world. I think that's another win for Awakening because themes and foils and worldbuilding stuff are things Engage never really attempts. At least, not successfully.

I fail to see how someone's preference for a decent narrative is in any way an "excuse", that's their prerogative. Your taste in narrative can be watching grass grow if the gameplay carries , which is fine. Others want both, and FE has been able to provide as such before, nothing wrong with that either. People aren't going to value mid content the same way, especially when our finances and free time are totally different.

Especially when the games take so long to release and are fully priced, audiences should expect polish and high quality in all aspects within the game’s budget and are fair to criticize something otherwise, especially when it is the series and genre’s unique selling point. I think it’s only fair for serious critique to consider all parts of the game, especially when consumers without the prerequisite knowledge to “just ignore the story” will be experiencing the product in full, and it will inform and effect their experience with the gameplay.

The problem is the break mechanic was quite useless and only benefits the enemy. I prefer the weapon triangle giving you better hit rateș and damage, rather than breaking your opponent.

This definitely feels like one of the most fair, honest reviews of Engage I've seen. I feel the characters in Engage are so charming that they alone made me love the game a lot more. And the gameplay and music are just fantastic. Sure the story has its caveats but I still enjoyed it for what it was. Thanks for making this video and good luck on future projects.

Gameplay is still so good. The opening gameplay is definitely in my top favorites where after it opens up it's a different game. Awakening engage 3 houses all have a puzzle to them on how to manage through the early battles and that's half the fun. Other games have a similar treatment but just using these for example to show how early game can basically be its own story. Sorry but story is still super bad no matter how "it's simple on purpose" arguments are made. The start us speed running the dead parent cliche and even fates did it better where corrins ignorance caused mikotos downfall and the invasion to begin but we had enough time to get to know both sides to choose or not choose. I was laughing when blue mom was passing away it nearly felt like a parody of this trope. Enemy units were cool but had a heel turn seconds after wanting to bash our heads in. Not good in any sense. The alter world units are cool at least Art is alright. Nothing crazy but nothing bad. Dlc alright. Gave us a lot of new rings and good classes to play with. Near top tier. Amiboo system why is it bad? Fates got it down near perfectly by basically bring new units to play.

Honestly I loved that Alfred wanted people to remember him as a lovable idiot so much that he hid away that he still has his illness but only pretends he’s cured and doesn’t suffer from attacks when people aren’t around. Don't worry about FE content for now. We are still waiting on the next game. I will probably watch most future videos, except the ones about movies. I just don't watch movies anymore these days. I am currently playing the Xenoblade 3 DLC and I love it. I'm playing as A and probably not even using her right. But she's just so cool! I also finally finished Lets go Pikachu. The flying on Glurak is not as fun as I thought it would be. I myself really enjoyed Engage as a whole. I had a great time playing it. The Xenologue kinda broke me though. Chapter 5. My god. And Alear was just a sad abused child who wanted to be loved. And Lumera gave her that love. And yes, we got the Kaga plot line again, but I think it was executed fairly well. And to be fair, no one really plays FE for the story anyway. I also still have a lot of games to play. Like Trails, Star Ocean, Legends Arceus, the Gen 9 DLC. (I got it for Free.) Rhapsody, Rune factory. You could make some videos on Rune factory if you like these games. I am also trying to play some other games besides Trails, so I don't burn out on that series. Finished my replay of Zero, now i just need to play Azure and I can jump into the last 3 games. But only after i played some other games. Like Ys. More ys is always good. I want to play Ys 3 next and then maybe Star Ocean 1. After I finish Harvestella. I will never run out of games. I'm also thinking about getting the VN for Tsukihime. The story seems really interesting. I also still have Ace Attorney. I will never run out of games to play. My sister has my 3 Houses cartridge btw. And she is playing it again. I guess she is having a better time with this game than I did. I am also replaying Awakening and rushing through the game for all the spotpass characters. I just need 6 more runs to fill my support log. I hope I can finish in time. I hope you have a wonderful christmas Mamo and have fun with talking about Xenoblade. Nobody in my friend group complained about Engage, because nobody but me even plays Fire Emblem. And I will always play Fire Emblem. I don't know these games are just sticking with me from my childhood and I still love them. And they are fun and have great music. I really love the Tellius games. Too bad they are stuck on the wii. I really want to play FE 4 one day.

Imma be real, Engage is a good game, I do believe is the FE with the best mechanics and level design out there, you can make an argument for the story not being bad in on itself, but there is one truth that is just undeniable, the story is terribly delivered. There's points where I was laughing when it was clear that I was supposed to be sad (Lumera's death) just because of how bad the whole moment was presented. A story can be simple and still be well executed, and I feel execution is where Engage really dropped the ball, I mean, you said it yourself, you laughed when Marnie died, and that was not played as a joke in any way. Is gonna sound sad what I'm about to say, but I was having much more fun the second time I played the game because I was skipping the cutscenes, it removes the one big thing I am really dissatisfied with this game, and I gotta say, this game is WAY better than people give it credit for. The main issue is that the flaws of this game STARE into your soul in the form of cutscenes and although you can very easily skip them, that is not something most people would do on their first playthrough.

Just like Fates, we have a new fire emblem game that doesn't deliver on the story despite spending a lot of time on said story. ​@@EXchoco First, that is not necessarily how business works, especially not when we're talking about a series that's faced cancellation before. There's plenty of reason to say that Fire Emblem is safe now, but failure to sell does not always translate to positive change. The idea that by being negative you're doing the good work is self-satisfactory first and foremost, the truth is you don't know, and both Nintendo and Intelligent Systems can be pretty stubborn. Second, while I won't pretend that everybody loved it, the people ragging on it aren't the majority either. The majority is fine with it, but nothing more, it seems. Third, you may or may not know this, but Fire Emblem "changing it up" is how it's always been. I'm not saying this to justify bad changes per se, but more so because it just seems to be something the devs want to do with the series. They create new settings with new characters, tell stories differently, hire new artists, create new mechanics and remove recent ones. Even their remakes are vastly different from the originals. What is happening now feels analogous with the Awakening days, where a lot of new fans expected to get more of what they liked. But that's not how it goes, and frankly, being a longterm FE fan is in part being able to accept change. I'm painting broad, obviously. Good writing isn't something that should come and go. I'm just saying, expecting Three Houses 2 (yeah, I'll just rip the band-aid off, we all know this is what it's really about) was always going to end in disappointment.

I really enjoy Engage and had so much fun especially since the game is just made to be silly and fun. Of course everyone complains about the story and for the right reason yes a simple and predictable story isn’t bad but it just isn’t executed well at all. Plus the world building is Fates level of horrible with us only meeting the top of the food chain which also hurt the roster. We have so many royal characters along with their retainers which of course aren’t royalty but still apart of the system. Only really Seadall and Yunaka are people outside of all of that and just people. I wanted to see more of the people of this world because it’s a pretty interesting world. The gameplay is like the main selling point it’s pretty balanced and I really like the class system and emblens along with break and smash just so much to experiment with plus a great use a skills and positioning with skills being locked to classes instead of making a bunch of busted characters you make an interesting team. Only downside is that a lot of the characters just end up being an extension of which Emblem your using more than the character itself. I really can’t wait to see what else is next for Fire Emblem and if they expand or use these systems again. I also understand the burn out and it has to be worst for a content creator than a viewer because sometimes content creators are forced to make certain type of content for their audience or the algorithm while players like me just played for a couple of months and put down the game and don’t have to pick it up again unless I want to play it

I hear more people bitching about 3H these days and if you call that a bad game, your opinion, that game slaps. It’s the same thing as people bitching about Tears of the Kingdom. But fuck, one of the most fun and inventive gaming experiences and praising that and not worrying about “muh story” in a game that made it clear it FOCUSED on being a good gaming experience before a riveting story. Yaaaas I'd even say Engage slots into the top 5 for me, the positives outweigh the negatives so much. Music's good, game play is good, characters are memorable and lovable, and as you said some of them are surprisingly fleshed out too. I made my own tier list on games and engage I put as high on gameplay as low as story near reverse of 3 houses which I found so bad playing with how much repeat gameplay it has when they put a lot of work into story a few different stages could have been good. Edgeard route worst one. Wish we could control the Veronica summon system and pick who we want or just get heroes of each specific color instead of no names. Would have made that ring much better overall. The hub world is so much better than 3 houses that basically slows gameplay down so much for that renown. Engage was tiny and while most of it was not needed the idea should be expanded on for future games REMOVE THAT LEVEL CAP SYSTEM. so annoying to play ans grind only to see it doesn't matter the foe will always be better in the dlcs. Seriously give us the option to choose weather to want a harder game aka shorter or a static one. Never do it again Fe

But the mislabeling with the "just an anniversary game" "it's simple" "it's not taking itself seriously" excuses that aren't founded in anything within the game or that the developers have said (and in fact only things that contradict those claims) is getting old. In my opinion this insistent need to categorize Engage out of criticism only speaks louder to why so few liked it.

@@jaden149 Engage also recycles and reuses old tropes and cliches that does not help it's case in anyway either. Also, the "Fire Emblem is not about the story" argument seriously needs to die. That aspect is the sole reason why Engage got 1.6 million copies sold compared to Three Houses 3.4 million. When people found out the story was bad, a lot of fans didn't bother with it. Some of my friends didn't even get it because they watched some of the cutscenes and hated how corny and cliche it is. I beat the game and honestly? Engage is probably my lest favorite fire emblem game to date. I know that the ring systems can be addicting, but outside of that? Everything else is mid to bad at best.

Thank you for making this review. I am glad that you said Engage was good. For me I enjoyed it a lot. It reminded me of late 90's/early 2000's anime with a bit of power rangers thrown into the mix and I really like it. I really like the characters too, at least the ones you recruit and in your army. Four hounds great concept in the beginning way too annoying since after you fight them in that initial chapter you fight them again and again to a point that it got so annoying. Music great IMO. Yeah.....the dlc I liked the story about it, the bracelet engages you get (thank goodness that we got chrom and robin), and the characters you get the two fell dragons and the four winds are definitely worth getting but the gameplay is very not satisfying way too hard even on hard difficulty and on the lowest difficulty, normal it was too easy. Still played it on normal so I can get the rewards. Overall really liked engage.

People overestimate the quality of "FE stories" due to a few standouts (Genealogy, Path of Radiance, Shadows of Valentia). Engage's story is nothing special but it's coherent, character motivations makes sense, Alear is nice and relatable, and it gives you enough motivation to keep playing. It's not much better or worse than most other FEs. How 'complex' were Binding Blade and Sacred Stones really?? And Engage is damn more coherent than Awakening and Fates. People saying it's the worst plot in the series are absolutely overreacting.

@DreamyShyShy ⬆This! I also felt that Engages writing was one of the worst in the series. As someone who is kind of a Conquest defender. While the writing in that game can be pretty dumb and ludicrous at times, I did give a shit about the characters. In fact, Xander is one of my favorites in the series and I was kind of sad he was not the main character as I felt the story would have been better if this was the case. There is a reason why there is no Birthright rep in Engage because there is no story in that game and your birth siblings never go through an arc while Conquest at least has elements of these things in it's base game (along with good maps.) While Revelations and Birthright and my least favorite games in the series, Engage is probably my third least favorite for multiple reasons. While this guy in the video says the map designs are good...I do not like them personally. All the maps that have gimmicks are specifically designed to pad out the run time and because of that, their not fun. Your one defend map (chapter 8) is not even a defend map like what they did in Conquest (the superior version.) It's masqueraded as a defeat the boss map as the battle ends once you beat Ivy, so why have a defend map at all? It's not deigned to be. Obviously, story is the biggest issue here (along with other things like being in the hub for too long, complicated menus, two hour long maps or longer, no way to level other units that are behind incase someone dies, I could honestly go on.) The strange part about this though and I don't know if you agree with me but a lot of people who reviewed the games story say that the Brodia arc is the most memorable part of the game and I actually kind of agree. Are there some predictable things about it, sure, but the reason why people like that section of the game, myself included, is mostly because of Diamant. He is one of the very few characters in the game that actively goes through an arc with a beginning, middle and end and to top that off. His relationship with his family, retainers, and country are really compelling, I wish I got more of it! The "Was I a good son" line is clearly a main protagonist line which is another topic I feel is worth discussing. Even though Alear is the main character, it almost felt like it should have went to Diamant and the fact that he is a lord that has a complex relationship with his family is just a slap in the face to me. It's like IS knows exactly what I want in a FE game but never goes through with those changes, ever. I want another Ike so badly and Diamant was honestly the closest thing we had gotten to that. He's just a crown prince instead of a mercenary but very similar in some ways in personality. I will just end this by saying after chapter 10, the quality of the writing takes a hit...hard. Engage is pretty infamous now for it's third act being the worst the writing has to offer and I pretty much feel the same way.

@DreamyShyShy 100%! Like I said, there is an active discussion online about Diamant being a better main protagonist than Alear. So much so one of my ideas that probably would have fixed the game story wise, at least a little bit anyway is to make Brodia the first continent you go to instead of Firene. If IS knew they had a character that actively went though character development, unlike Alfred. You should probably make that character (Diamant) your Robin in this game...through honestly I wish Diamant was the Chrome equivalent and Alear was the Robin equivalent but if they have to keep the avatar as the main character (which I honestly don't support anymore) at least this would help (what also doesn't help is Brodia is the only continent that DOES go through and arc and the other three don't in any way. Ivy could have...but they screwed it up at the end and all they did was make Griss laugh at her and Ivy, in response, says nothing at Elusia castle. That's it, that's her arc.) It would have been so cool for Diamant and Alear to talk about what it's like having a father or mother when the other doesn't have one. It would have given them something to talk about and connect with since (as far as I know) Diamants mother is never referenced (so...dead more then likely but I world have written it in a way where she fled for a mysterious reason) and Alear doesn't know who her father is. Like...have them talk about it! This is a good idea and they could bond over something! But in order to do this they would have to redesign the whole map because yeeeeahh, that is not how seasons work with a world and an equator. If Brodia and Elusia are at equal length on top of the world and only one of them is snowy year round, both of them should be snowy year round (same applies to Ferine and Solm who, in theory, should both be desert continent's.) Engages map design is honestly the worst map I have ever seen in a fire emblem game because of this reason. I'll give fates this, it might not have a name, but at least it doesn't have any contradictions to weather in it's world. There are other glaring issues like conflict. You have five protagonist and none of them fight or disagree about anything and if they do (Chapter 20) even for a split second. Alear, our lord and savior fixes the situation with a single breath and everyone tells them how amazing they are. As someone who writes stories on their free time. This hurts me...deeply.

@@marcusclark1339 I felt that the origins of the emblem rings is the most messy and convoluted origin story ever put to FE. It's so god damn hard to summarize everything and the writing contradicts itself multiple times through out the game. So pretty much, the emblems come from different words but were created by Lumera a thousand years ago. We have no idea HOW they were created and if the original characters are dead, astral projecting, VRing this shit, we get nothing. To top that off, famous landmarks of past games are in Engages world. So because of that, doesn't this mean all of the original fire emblem characters existed in Elios years ago? In fact, it is explained at the end of the game that an emblem can be detached from their rings and walk away. Since this was NEVER explored until the very end, you could make the argument that Marth and the others could become separate from their rings and not disappear, Am I right, Idk! The game explains this along with the war a thousand years ago so terribly that any theory that I have could actually be true, but that's just the gist of it.

The dreams made us think he was this twisted evil person when he was an disturbed kid who had to hide his emotions and feelings in fear of being killed like his siblings. I think Engage's gameplay & visuals are good, better than alot in the series BUT the writing, tone, characters designs & music are abysmal 😭 The writing is unapologitically cringe weeb vtuber vibes, it wasn't funny nor "engaging" or dramatic & in a game series about war it really didn't feel like it at all, the game really felt like a cosplay/vtuber roleplaying some theatre drama about war lol The characters designs are some of the worst in the genre & even the most weird FE game (Fates) had better designs than these, they had few weird/shitty designs but over all it had plenty good. Music is a given in any FE game but here it's totally unmemorable & the main theme is laghuable. I hope IS learns from Engage & whatever they do next should be better.

Engage is in the top 3 of FE games for me. Great music in context of gameplay making it that much better, best gameplay so far for me with good systems and good balance in the game. If you don't look up particular warp cheese strats and do them (they always exist) lunatic difficulty is challenging but fair as the game has all the tools you need. Not like earlier games like 3H where youre reliant on speed growth or brick your MC or other shit like awakenings lunatic+. Story definitely on the weak side, I thought the second to last arc (ch17 till ch21) was nice and the endgame was great but the midgame story was lackluster because it does not do a good job of leading up to it. I did however empathize a lot with Alear and Veyle's relationship which made the story enjoyable for me, reason enough to see it through. It's almost vexing when obvious newcomers to the series think we need "better story like 3H" when that story is absolute ass and the game is a slog to play through more than once, you can remove all classes but wyverns and it makes no difference, if you play more than 1 route, they never played the tellius games for sure. Also those who make their opinions based on video game essays deserve an even bigger fuck you, god knows how many people shit on engage because it's the newest game and it did not break sales records because favorite youtuber said it's bad (because 3H more views so engage bad). Engage would have been better without the DLC, the DLC are horrendous and shit all over the balancing of the game. Good thing mods exist for things like 60fps as well.
