Thank you! The Patreon group basically follows this ... plus more. I've been thinking about doing it in order again here on YT but I would be repeating too many videos that are already on here. Would be nice to have them all in an order though. You can see the order here: www.patreon.com/posts/96493793

Dear Blue. Thank you for all your lessions. There is no doubt thet there on youtube is a lot of good teachers but you are the first from which I get this wow effect. After more than ten years of teaching guitar I was stuck with playing chords. After watching all your videos (some of them many times) I finally made some progress in way of melodic playing and soloing. I like your consistency and a way you giving your knowledge supported with just enough graphic interpretation. Thanks for your lessions. Greetings from Europe.

I am coming back to guitar after almost 3 decades away...and my wife has expressed interest in learning for the first time. This seems like a really great road map for us to take the journey together (it's been so long I've forgotten more than I remember). Great video, thank you for what you do! Instant subscribe.

Same here (except the wife part). Blue's book Fretboard Fundamentals is a good "review checklist" if you find that sort of thing useful. (I do.)

So, I watch a lot of guitar videos. Some good, some not so good. Even with this guy. The one thing this guy taught me that seems like a little thing but has helped IMMENSELY is "naming the shapes." Not only does it help you remember them and their order, it also helps you find them when you are in a triad position. If a triad is shaped a certain way, there is usually only ONE scale shape that would fit that. He's got a lot of valuable advice but for me, naming the shapes has been the most useful....

Thanks for all the great lessons and Happy New Year! You were one of my best discoveries of 2024. I've studied many of the great teachers on youtube from Rick Beato to Justin Sandercoe to Tim Pierce, but you have a unique way of connecting the dots when it comes to teaching how chords and scales relate and then how to put it all together with triads etc. So many people give up before reaching their potential. It's really important to get people playing so they have motivation to learn the more difficult concepts. I'm from Texas, grew up in the same neighborhood south of Dallas as Stevie Ray Vaughan. Unfortunately, that's where the similarities end but it was Elvis then SRV (with some English bands in the middle) that served as my inspiration. Love the blues...I even named my hunt'n dog Blue;). When I started learning there was no internet. This is such a great time to learn from some of the best. Thanks again, you are on to something good! Stay with it!

What a great way to start off the new year! This practice plan really seems do-able to me, so - even if I know some of the stuff on your list already - I'm gonna give it a go in the order you suggested, because it seems like each step builds upon the foundation set in the previous one. I think it'll make me a more solid guitar player by the end of the year. Wish I'd have had this a few years back, when I decided to learn the electric guitar. Thanks, Blue!

This is such a great overview because it covers, from a big picture perspective, pretty much every main concept to learn to become proficient, or fluent on the guitar. My guitar playing friends would consider me to be a good guitar player, while I think of myself as being a mediocre guitar player. I am familiar with ALL of the concepts Blue describes in this video, but I don’t truly know ANY of them, truly have them down cold. Given the realities of the busyness of life and everything else, I would say that it would take me somewhere from 3 to 5 years to master these 12 major areas of guitar playing. This gives me some good ideas on things to work on and truly know well, a big picture roadmap to follow. The sooner I start, the sooner I’ll become proficient! Thanks Blue!

This is great stuff. I would say this is a great ladder to test abilities and see where to direct skill building. Then plan out to work on the gaps in knowledge. Each step of this looks like a years practice though. For an average Joe like me. Thanks for sharing such great material. I think. 😂

I like the way you're thinking... self evaluation and focusing on where we can improve. We'll said thanks!
@jumpingdude76615 күн бұрын
Sorry if this is a silly question, but I am confused by the instructions at 12:27. First you play an A minor chord, then play an A minor pentatonic lick. Then you play a D minor chord, then play a D minor pentatonic lick. So you are playing different scale for each chord. But in a song, don't you usually play only one scale over all the chords? For instance, the Stairway to Heaven solo is all in A minor pentatonic, even though the chords beneath it change from A minor to G to F.
@CD_Character14 күн бұрын
I'm sure Blue would say that both are valid. There's no hard rule - your ears will tell you which is the "right one" for the song or the moment, as there's surely no rule against using both within the same song. But as a vehicle for learning and practicing, I'd match the chord with the lick to get going.
@jumpingdude76614 күн бұрын
@@CD_Character I agree, whether it sounds right to your ears is always the ultimate test. Also, I did some further research, and I believe I now understand the theory behind why Blue's method sounds so pleasing: It turns out that if you play the corresponding pentatonic scale over each chord, it is equivalent to playing the diatonic scale of the key. For example, suppose your song is in C major, and you play an E minor chord. You then play a lick in E minor pentatonic, which contains the note B. This note is not in the C major pentatonic scale. However, it is in the C major diatonic scale. The same goes with all the chords and corresponding pentatonics in the key of C: the notes will always belong to the C major scale. Just thought I'd mention this, in case it is helpful to anyone. As this took me a long time to understand!
@GuitarLessonsVancouver12 күн бұрын
That's right. If the sing is in Am you can stick to the A minor pentatonic scale, but you could also use a different scale over the chords, like D Minor Pentatonic over a Dm chord. Good to be able to have both so you can play over the changes as they say

This is awesome and a great way to start off the new year! I have a question: Are you going to be creating lessons each month that accompany the roadmap you just laid out for your Patreon subscribers? For instance: in January, do you plan to put out a practice video with methods on how to help learn the fretboard for 20 minutes a day? Or is this more of a map for us to create our own practice schedule for the year?
@GuitarLessonsVancouver16 күн бұрын
Thanks! The lessons are all pretty much on Patreon and in that order, though I haven't labeled them to suggest a month by month progresion. I'm thinking about doing that as well so one can follow through the lessons either way. You should be able to see the plan in order here: www.patreon.com/posts/96493793?

Thank you very much Blue. I have a question, though it is not technical and may be considered as natural talent, but how can we "develop the taste of melodious combination" in a lick? I know it is more personal, but is there anyway to systematically improve it through exercise? I know some guy who knows very little about technical stuff, but when he plays guitar randomly, it sounds awesome already. I wish I know the secret to develop that kind of feeling. Cheers from "Pacitan" in the south coast of East Java facing Indian Ocean. We like to come here very often since it is beautiful, and yes everything is cheap, not crowded, safe and friendly people. 🙏
@GuitarLessonsVancouver16 күн бұрын
Good question! One way is to play the guitar parts from songs you like, learn them note for note, and play along to the original. Try to compre your sound to the original in real time. Copy the expressiveness. Once you can do that, you can start to make things sound like "your own", developing your own style. It's one half understanding how the music works, and one half making the guitar sing. 🎸

I went to Amazon and looked at Book One. I saw a page with all those lines on them and all the little circles and it looks like Greek to me. I actually bought a guitar book by someone, took one look at page one just covered with lines and white and black dots and numbers and stuff and put it back on my shelf. It made no sense to me whatsoever, though I know intellectually it does have meaning. But just not to me.
