Matt Parker did a 360 camera thingy about maths on his channel and it's pretty good. But I have no idea how you'd do something similar with linguistics or broadcastineering. The design & arts section of the Hochschule Luzern (HSLU) has an massive library of fabric samples (as in cloth, not matter) with all kinds of designs. They used to be used in factories to show potential customers what could be done, nowadays they're useless but the HSLU saved a lot of them from being thrown away. Dunno if that's good enough for a video but it's what came to mind. Happy birthday, park bench! Switch it up by having the camera upside down. Or lie on the ground before the bench, with your legs on the bench, and point the camera straight downwards, so it looks like you're sitting. Have the video & audio go backwards. Do a karaoke. Just do an episode of you two eating bananas, silently. Achieve world peace.

Edit: NOT a company, not even a startup. On the blog, Vi says it is a research group, and she does not want it to be confused with a startup. They don't even have a business model. She states: " if people are saying that we're a startup, then maybe we're doing something wrong". Congratulations on a year of park benching!!! 1. I think VR + 360 should be done only if there's a good reason. I'm teaching myself some AR, so maybe park benching on a virtual made bench could be very interesting. :) 2. There's a lot of cool stuff at Oxford University, beautiful places and many interesting researchers. 3. I quite like it when you interview people to learn more about them, as well as your arctic stories & behind the scenes stories & Q&As are my personal favourites from your park benches, so I'd favour more of those. I've also enjoyed your gear reviews, but that's mainly because I'm eyeing up a gopro, and we do lots of work on gaze stabilization in our lab so seeing the DJI Osmo was interesting to me due to that personal interest.

Where I go to school, GA Tech, we have a building called Tech Tower which has 4 massive Ts on it that are consistently stolen every 5-10 years or so. The school now has a crazy security system to stop people stealing it, but a couple years ago a student climbed up the side of the building(which is like 4-5 stories tall) during spring break with nothing but some rope and lowered down the T and stole it all by himself. He turned himself in a week or two later and was going to be expelled but tons of alumni wrote in saying they would cut funding to the school if the expelled him, so they only suspended him instead

I love the simplicity, down-to-earth, minimal editing, unscripted, relaxed, just rock up in public feel, and the content is always entertaining and interesting. Please don't drift too far from that. If you want to mix it up, tweet an invitation for anyone to join you for the last video of the day... and see what happens when random people turn up. Maybe get them to ask questions, or quiz them (it might fail miserably, and will definitely increase the editing requirements a bit, but could be worth a try).

At Kiel University (Northern Germany), a group of computer science students have equipped all the windows of a 14-storey university building (one of the tallest in the city) with RGB LEDs and connected them to the network via homemade controllers. At the University of Nottingham's School of Geography we have the moulds for a huge tabletop model of the lake district which are from the 1800's. There was a pretty big project to work out how they fit together (since they were not labelled and there are several hundred moulds) by scanning then with lasers and 3d modelling on the computer. I wasn't directly involved with this but my PhD supervisor was in charge of the whole thing. They also did a display about it for Keswick Museum a year or so ago, no idea if that's still there.

I find that 360 video works the best in a narrative format where you are just another person in the room or you cast as a silent protagonist of sorts. I'm not convinced that it works so well in an educational or informative video without being distracting and in the way, since you are generally trying to direct the viewers attention to a specific thing. I've always figured 360 video in a whodunnit/murder mystery style has some serious potential.

FlipFlopGaming most US states have several universities called _____ State University and only the state flagship actually contains the name of the state. For example, Ohio has Ohio State, Kent State, Wright State, Cleveland State, Bowling Green State, etc.

Every year around early February (this year from the 8th to 11th) the students at my university (Michigan technological university) build giant ice sculptures for our "winter carnival" they're remarkable impressive and student built, its been going on since 1922 and its a massive part of the school's culture. beyond that the keweenaw penninsula is a pretty interesting place with some cool things, mostly related to the once booming copper mining industry. it would be cool to see you do a video on something around here!

360 bike ride: you can find it on my channel as Stockholm 360 video I make 360 video's myself. It is really hard to find a format that is great for vr. What I did is biking around in a city. You can look around for yourself and see a different view every time you look because the camera is moving on a bike. There is also not a specific thing you have to look at so you won't miss anything. I'm still experimenting with it so the video is not perfect. For example the animations in between the shots are not the best. But you get the idea.

Personally I really like these as they are because I can put them on and draw for 10-15 minutes without having to look over at it very often. It's nice to just listen to you guys ramble and make jokes without needing to be sitting glued to the screen the whole time. I guess what I'm saying is I actually enjoy the way these aren't so much about the visuals usually.

I bet someone already suggested it but I haven't seen it so here's my idea. You should make a Technical Difficulties in 360. Use a round table with a camera in the middle. For cuts between takes you could always fade to black or something to not disorient people but I don't think that's necessary since you don't really move all that much. I own a Samsung Gear VR and seen some things in 360 with cuts and that wouldn't be a problem unless you swich places with each other. Maybe the viewing experience wouldn't be optimal but it would be fun!

Tom, you know the Tested guys right? Get in touch with Norm and Will and see if there's anything that can be done with Foo VR and photogrammetry. I'm thinking for the Things series, you could 3d scan a location using photogrammetry and then import your (and any interviewee's) movements into the VR scene, so we can walk around and "be there" with you while you point to and interact with things!

OOH another great one that Tom will love. I do not know if it is still empty of water or if they have re-flooded the cave, The Crystal Cave. The cave with giant crystals. I do not know is 360 cameras can handle the heat of the cave but that would be very intriguing video footage. The layman and the scientist may both find it useful.

Last time I checked, Newcastle University (Newcastle Upon Tyne) had a sort of augmented reality kitchen for dementia patients. Pretty much every surface in the kitchen is a screen that can show some information that the person needs, e.g. a to-do list, or the recipe they're trying to follow. As they move around the kitchen, the information moves with them in case they forget or lose track of what they're doing. It's a really nice idea.

I don't recommend 360 video. It usually turns out more annoying than interesting. having to pan around in low res video isn't fun.
@scragar8 жыл бұрын
The Killer Spud 4K 3D cameras don't look too bad because the end result is that what you're looking at is typically 720 at any given point, but they're crazy expensive and still have the panning issue, really this sort of thing is great for stills of a room so you can see everything, but bad for video unless the view naturally gravitates towards a focus point or there's something interesting on all sides so panning isn't required.
@woutervanr3 жыл бұрын
And a few years later this is still true. Tom mentions in the video with the new Go pro 360 cam to use it to be able to frame the shot after. That's a good idea. Loads of people film rides on bikes or walking tours. Being able to afterwards decide what's interresting can be really handy there.
@Wizrd1478 жыл бұрын
You could do a road trip. You could even make it 360 if that appeals to you. I'd do it long-play style, but that's just me. That would work with the 360 view, as it'd give people something to look at while you're driving and not talking (or just talking rubbish). You could announce when you're going to do it ahead of time and take questions over twitter (or twitch?). I think that'd be really cool and chill. It's like a chance to just hang-out with the park bench-crew.

Ongoing idea for park bench (that I would be very excited about) Keep the format of you two, but have both of you video calling each other from different places. Perhaps you could walk through the town or city you are in, giving cool thoughts about it (on top of whatever content you make there), perhaps you meet up in the same place at the end of the call, or perhaps you set a challenge of things to do in that call. Regardless, it keeps the natural vibe and chat of the park bench, but also becomes very flexible and open to new ideas

I'm not a big fan of 360 videos, but one idea that came to me is bringing us into the conversation. So just place the camera at about eye level where someone who is part of the conversation might sit, so we're able to turn to look at the person talking. It might not work for the park bench, since it's only the two of you and it might not work for Citation Needed because there are a lot of cuts, but I think it might be a cool idea. It wouldn't use the full range of 360, but it would be natural to let us look back and forth between speakers.

I have an idea for a side-series you could do on the channel. "Making: The Park Bench". Instead of a behind the scenes look at the filming, how about you actually build a park bench? Maybe do one episode of it every 6 weeks, by the end of it you guys will have your very own park bench and can use it to film episodes when you're short on time. I know you guys have this channel and all the videos as memories of the last year, but a park bench constructed by the two of you would be a physical souvenir of the Park Bench.

The University of South Alabama's Coastal Weather Research Center in Mobile, AL houses the Waterman Globe. It is a 12 ft. diameter aluminum globe painted by the Rand McNally Map Company in the 1940s. Bonuses to the location include the Weather Research Center itself, warm weather nearly all year around, and plenty of park benches nearby.

At the university of Bremen (northern Germany) we have a micro-G drop-tower. The institute owning it is called ZARM. With it, you can make something experience micro-G for almost 5 seconds by just letting it fall and almost 10 with a catapult system. I might be able to establish contact but I'm not directly involved or even know someone directly involved. For the VR stuff, you should have a look at what ViHart is doing right now with EleVR. It's a bit different, but they're doing some good research on VR. Generally, VR is a research topic for a few decades by now, but the rise to the consumer market opens it up for more people which transforms the field quite heavily right now.

One of the best 360 things I saw was a behind the scenes thing. They filmed a music video in 360 without cuts and when watching the music video you just revolve around as they wished but when you watch the behind the scenes you're watching the same thing, but you can move. I don't think that'll be particularly helpful to you, but it's all I could think of. Roughly 8 months late.
