I would learn a lot if you would make a "behind the scenes" video that shows your lighting setup here, how you decide on settings (for example, exposing vlog), and if you would show how you grade the GH5 footage you shoot for these videos. Thanks very much!
@MediaDivision5 жыл бұрын
You mean the talky lighting setup? It's a simple two light setup + the practicals in the background. (All from cameras perspective) upper right side is a Aputure 300D with light dome and a grid to prevent the light from spilling to much on the displays and the background (for better separation). Running at 80% it is quite bright and allows f3.6 @ 800 ISO. The second light is a light storm that is in the upper right corner behind me. Thats all. This is shot with Vlog-l and uses a selfmade LUT that includes a Kodak film simulation LUT from Filmcvonvert, a Teal and Orange LUT, and some manual tweaking. It is really not that hard or complicated. I would just advise you to experiment a lot.

thank you so much for this. This long term review really helps better understand what the EV-1 is really about. I opted for the Ursa Mini Pro and I can honestly say that all these cameras are in the same level to some degree or another. All with amazing features and horrendous fall backs that ultimately put us in a somewhat level playing field in terms of pros and cons. Oh well lol

Thank you DSA… I was about to get the 4.7 back in the day as I did (and still do) love the image you will get... but BMD was just unable to deliver and that broke my trust in them. Having used the Ursa mini 4.7… for me the cam is to large, to heavy and to bad in low light. It is definitely a cam for narrative work more than run n' gun, doc, ecent etc. Two very different cameras with different approaches but both a very nice image. EVA is just more versatile IMHO… is I was only doing adds/narrative I definitely would have gone for the Ursa, too.

One year ago I had to choose a camera in this budget range, I eventually went with the Sony FS5 because the camera of the place I worked was a Sony FS7. I thought it would be a nice addition for the projects that required 2 camera's. In reality, there's not alot of those, and seeing this video kind of makes me regret not going for the EVA1, as I'm not that blown away by the performance of the FS5. It has it's strong points, but it also really feels like a dated camera (before I worked with the FS700, this is basically almost the same camera, but better codec and 4k).
@arnenoot99485 жыл бұрын
Also appreciate you showing a few projects. Usually reviewers or the Peter McKinnons (?, is that how you spell it) of this world just ramble about a camera, but you put it to use and show what you made with it. With the actual restrictions that client projects bring (budget, time, conflicting visions, whatever).

A lot of good ideas and some nice suggestions there just a small note: you don't lose DR if you forget to change the Raw from ProRes to ProRes Raw - but the curve recorded is very different and looks a lot closer to a Rec709 as it is a lot steeper - but recorded DR is the same. But the post-workflow to make sure you have it correct is a bit of a pain!
@MediaDivision5 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Yep… liked discussed in the group that is a workflow hassle that is very avoidable but bound to happen… I hope they can find a way to trigger that from within the camera with the presets!
@user-bq1gj9we6o5 жыл бұрын
Yeah. That would be good, but I'm not sure how that would work from an engineering perspective? You would've thought Atomos would be able to do that anyway? Why can't it auto shift recording modes as the input signal changes?
@MediaDivision5 жыл бұрын
I don't know, but you should be able to transfer some kind of LANC or meta data that tells the recorder what to do over SDI. If both sides agree and there is no standard to break………… I guess it comes down to Atomos and Panasonic not seeing profit in just doing it.
@user-bq1gj9we6o5 жыл бұрын
yeah, but I mean: the camera already tells the recorder when it's sending a raw signal or a video signal. I'm wondering why the recorder can't just auto switch recording modes when the signal type changes. Better yet, it could just remember what was used last time and autoswitch back. That must be a simple enough change... In fact, I might suggest it to them!
@MediaDivision5 жыл бұрын
Do so, but I guess that some might actually want to record ProRes HQ from the RAW signal (but then the with vlog or whatever is set in the camera). The best way are just presets that you can set up yourself and switch both devices at the same time… this way you loose the least time power cycling the devices

@MediaDivision5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Corentin... while I would appreciate it, there are many pros who reject it categorically. There are problems with the GH5 to switch it of completely and having a vibration save system. I don't think it is going to happen and at this time no cine cam has IBIS (or Dual IS).... maybe for a reason. Look into the S1... that will be interesting and if Panasonic doesn't neuter it, it has the potential to overtake the pro market from the right.

Cinema camera's don't have this IBIS feature because they are giving the DP and director the option to choose from Steadycam, Gimble, EasyRig, or whatever. Great video! Thanks. I'm still curious about a few things before buying one. I currently have a Shogun flame (w SDI) & a Ninja v, So could I get 4k raw from the EVA onto an SSD? Also, how bad is the 4k raw crop? the 5.7 k raw no crop looks dope, but it's nearly 40 min/ 1 tb SSD. Also thanks for talking about the GH5. I might pick 1 or 2 up with the Eva 1 if they match well to get some more angles on features and documentary work.
@MediaDivision5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Toni.... Unfortunately You need a Shogun Inferno to record ProRes RAW. While the Ninja V has the guts to do it, it is missing an SDI port. Maybe Atomos will release an SDI add on in the future. Be aware that ONLY FCPX supports ProRes RAW at this time. I usually don't use the crop as it makes your FOV very narrow. Yes, EVA and the LUMIX lines match well.

@@MediaDivision Dang. That's a bummer. I honestly am really loving this camera, but I'm starting to think that an URSA Mini Pro 4.6K might be a better fit. I recently built a beast custom build that can edit 6k for under $2k and a similar apple build was $8k. Even though I can afford it, there's no way I can justify paying over $6k in apple taxes. It's honestly quite a shame and a bummer. Panasonic honestly almost had convert, but it looks like Black Magic might get my money if they don't come to a reasonable solution for PC users soon.

Ursa 4.6 Not a bad cam at all, but unusable for me to lack of sensitivity. In the end it is very rare that you'll be able to tell EVAs high end h264 apart from a RAW master...... and I use RAW on EVA and on the 6K Mavo LF... that can handle 10000iso no problem

@@MediaDivision Very true. I personally use 2 Sony A7S's for wedding/event work because I can push the ISO to the max, but due to the distributors that I will be working with in the future, actual RAW is a requirement. Hello there! Thanks for this massive and classy review! I suppose and feel that it was a very honest review with a little bit of disappointing of the camera. I would like to ask if you would have chance to chose this camera again after one year wold you do it or try something else like c200 or Kinnefinity? (more or less same budget) Did Panasonic give any update since your "zoo" tests? ( i mean about this huge amount of compression internally that makes some footage unusable for pro work as You mention it there ) 240p/120p is a nice tool for telling stories and great gimmick for clients but is it now usable?(i think about it internally as LONG GOP, because if I will buy this EVA1 until end of january i wont be able to buy SHOGUN INFERNO at least until june so no raw/no pro-res for some time and i have to relay only on internal) I have watched this review few time this week and have a very hard decision to make :) Thanks in advance for any of Your thoughts! Cheers!
@MediaDivision5 жыл бұрын
Hello Johnny... thank you for the flowers. If you got the impression that I am disappointed, let me ensure you that I am not. EVA1 is a great workhorse that have been shown to be reliable and very practical. Panasonics pro division really knows what it is doing. If EVA1 is for you, that really depends on what you are doing and what your needs are (duh). I am not married to Panasonic and I'm looking into the Mavo LF and used Alexas as well as the RED Gemini .... but all of those are systems that cost a multiple of EVA (Mavo LF is 2x if you build a comparable system) and none of them would be any good if you plan to do event work of want to do a docu at the south pole, in a war zone, jungle etc. :-) EVA is great at those... a light, fast (boot time, vary ND), reliable, low power, great low footprint codec. All a Kinefinity 4K, c200 etc. are not as good or worthless at. On top of that, it is quite decent for narrative stuff as well, though not comparable to a Alexa or a Helium/Gemini... ?! Of course not. There have been many updates till the (zoo) "Forrest People" test I did... EVA became a very mature system since. Bug free from my point of view (something that Kinefinity user will has to fight with reading their forums... up to frying EF lens servos... better don't be at the south pole when that happens). Upgrade 2.0 brought 400mbps All-I internal (not an advantage over the 150mbps long GOP but Netflix requirement) and the really awesome RAW output up to 240fps!!! You will find plenty of examples for that in this video and on my channel. The aliasing effect has been dealt with by improving the math since release of this video. That is a whole new world since the "disappointing" hight fps of the zoo test. Is that as good as a Phantom... ?! Of course not. The internal results are still not great, but I would say, that under good conditions the 120 is usable for most projects (not cinema or national TV!). I would see the shogun as a very important ingredient in an EVA1 setup. But you can go without (and high fps are overrated)... if you haven't seen this watch it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGO9mYduibOsgZY.... that works without a Shogun. You WILL need a good EVF or monitor anyways. LCD is unusable for serious work. Would I buy EVA1 again? YES. At the moment, there is no new "contender" that is able to do what she does, IF your requirements match her abilities. Is EVA the perfect camera... ?! Of course not. I would not buy EVA if: You shoot in low light all the time (get a A7s2, GH5s etc.) EVA is not so good in low light, do weddings most of the times (no one cares for the quality.... go get a GH5s, Pocket 4K or wait for the S system etc.), or do narrative work most of the time. I would prefer a Terra 4K, Mavo then.... if you can get hold of one. EVA is extremely versatile and cheap to operate due to low cost media/batteries/light wight codec. I would choose her over the c200 in anything BUT low light and auto focus (if you are the kind of filmmaker that wants/needs one) I really hope I was able to help you a bit making a sophisticated decision... good luck Johnny

@@MediaDivision Wow! Thanks Nicolas this is best and most informative answer I have ever get on KZbin this 100% proves Your seriousness about that tool and taking people like me here also serious thanks fro that! Since the day I decide to upgrade from gh5 (what is actually my work horse in all tough conditions -20 degrees / +30 degrees, on military area and on swimming pool as well and in huge rain) but.. I must upgrade the dynamic range because gh5 just fail in some more critical work and there is no right answer for client at such moments and ND's where is no time for screwing that filter on lens when you loose the shot, also this is silly but clients looks on your gear and when they see a "DSLR" like thing they start asking "what is this" and its getting really slick (even when they know your work and they like it much). EVA1 was first idea and I need just to be sure is right way, my work is based on two types 100% pure Run&Gun doc/promos for clients that's why ND and light weight is great from EVA1 for gimbals. Second (more controlled environment like commercials/music videos). Low light....pain in the ass, when you can't use light or when you are owner/operator one man band. I assume from your video that its not so good and I have to keep up to 2500 at most cases. but I know that its impassable sometimes when you make DOC and just can't use light because this will for example distracts soldiers... :) i was concerning terra 4k but this is still 4/3 sensor and sometimes its not enough also this is reason why I want upgrade to S35 to get rid of adapters like m4/ > EF. Thank You Niclas very much for help, EVA1 is better choice than c200 from many perspective and probably I will go that way:) I hope that Panasonic will give presets for VFR because this is my only one concern about time when switching from 24>50 and higher. Thanks a lot! Cheers! Happy New Year full of new exciting work and new rich clients! :)

@media division. Now that this video is over a year old what are your thoughts as to the camera now? We are looking to jump into full 4K format filming and don’t yet have The budget for RED. We do a ton of high action shooting and love the price point of the SD card over the CFast cards plus the ability to use EF mount lenses so that we can utilize our canon glass. Can this camera do 4K at 240fps? Also can you completely do away with the factory monitor and go with a stand alone Shogun setup? Also how well would you say this would work in a RoninM gimbal? Also is a GH5s a good pair up for a secondary camera or as a B roll camera? Thanks in advance. Very nice video.
@MediaDivision4 жыл бұрын
RED is coming out with the Komodo soon... might be interesting if you are into RED. EVA is still a good cam... sure. Light, power efficient, and reliable. No camera I know of can do 4K at 240fps except the Phantoms (and they can do 1000fps to RAM) today. The best in class is the URSA mini G2 with 120fps at 4.6K. You could use the Shogun as the factory replacement, but then you cant use it as a recorder. Shogun is way to heavy anyways. get a small HD and keep the factory display for menus. Ronin M... not without hassle. EVA is long. Look at the MAVO as an alternative... much better for Gimbal use... but if you have a GH5s just make that your dedicated Gimbal cam. Cams intercut well (all modern pair quite well). Hope that helps.

Very helpful video, well presented too! I have just purchased an EVA1 and I noticed you refer to Green Screen working well. I shoot a fair number of Green Screen jobs in any given year. Can I ask, did you shoot the Green Screen work using the internal recording, or externally with the Inferno? Was wondering whether the 5.7K ProRes Raw would help with Green Screen, or actually because of no in-camera noise reduction when outputting raw that it could possibly be worse doing it this way? If you shot it internally did you record in 150mbps or 400mbps? Sorry for all the questions! Thank you.
@MediaDivision5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Warner Vision… The green screen work in this was shot in 4K on an Inferno using ProRes HQ. I can see that the 5.7K might bring a little advantage, but it is hardly worth it when you shoot a lot of footage and the data demand is killing you. In my tests, I can't distinguish ProRes HQ from the internal long GOP or All-I. For me, it is more a matter of convenience to shoot ProRes until Apple delivers a machine that can take a punch or two… hope that helps!

@MediaDivision5 жыл бұрын
Hello Peter....most cameras have that. I guess you are aware of different power grid frequencies in different parts of the world and why it can be important to match that. The system frequency menu changes the BASE frame rate of your system. While you can set a different frame rate in the variable frame rate setting, sound is only recorded at base frame rate. Practically: If you shoot 50fps and you want sound... set the system frequency to that. If you want to mix that with 25fps with sound, set the system frequency to that.
