Yeah there definitely seemed to be something odd going on with the 120fps footage and 240fps footage. The tree detail didn't look so bad but the hair detail was completely gone. Seems like a codec issue most likely... This actually inspired me to go back to my EVA1 test footage and check bitrates and I found a very weird issue where in 50Mbps mode the 120fps footage is actually 40Mbps and the 240fps footage is actually only 20Mbps. Oddly, subjectively the 240fps footage I shot didn't seem to have the severe sharpness issue I see in this test. Hopefully Panasonic will fix this. Can you check what bitrate your HFR footage was actually encoded at? And what modes were you in for your 120fps and 240fps? Mix for 120fps and mix+crop for 240fps? No chance you were in mix+crop for both?
@timm20207 жыл бұрын
Beautiful footage!!! Very crisp.
@MediaDivision7 жыл бұрын
Thank you… If you want crisp, the GH5 is a little bit crisper out of the cam. EVA does a cinematic image that is a bit softer. Higher resolution results in a smoother imager (yes I know, sounds counter intuitive)… more details but less "crisp" (sharp)

Thank you very very much for your great reviews. If possible would you please show us the following: 1. Switching Gain/ISO is it stepped or is it smooth? 2. IRIS Stepps on canon lenses and may be other lenses if you have. 3. 1-Push Auto Focus, or any Auto Focus ability it has. 4. White balance switching/dialing while recording, is it stepped or smooth? 5. Built in microphone sound quality These things would be so valuable and we would greatly appreciate it.
@MediaDivision7 жыл бұрын
Hello Alex… Thank you so much… very motivating I have very little time at the moment, but let me try to just answer your questions from experience: 1. Switching ISO is definitely visible… especially the 800 to 2500 native switch as it is a massive jump. Of course you can work against that in post… like you would with time lapse. 2. The IRIS steps depend on the lens… My Sigma 18-35 is visible and audible, the Sigma 100-400 is smooth. I only own one cheap old Canon lens (75-300), IRIS steps are is visible and audible. A manual IRIS lens is the best solution 3. Consider Auto Focus to be non existent on this cam. The push to focus is not even reliable as helper. 4. WB can be set in single digit increments, but as far as I have tested, not during recording. 5. Who cares ;-) No, I have a hard time to judge that. Not good enough for anything but reference… that is just the way internal mics are. I use lavalier mics.

Hi Nick, We got the EVA last week. Love it. Just wondering about something. Da Vinci 14 lite doesn't seem to recognise the footage out of the camera. Does the studio version? No problems so far with the atomos though. So was just wondering is the free da Vinci 14 not optimised for the longGOP out of the camera? Cheers in advance
@MediaDivision6 жыл бұрын
Congrats Marty… it's a lovely cam. Only the studio version supports the EVA1 internal codecs. At 250,- a bargain that offers noise reduction and HDR grading, too (can't do that with the free version). Otherwise EditReady will give you ProRes conversion (don't forget to set profile to "data" within resolve) or you crush the blacks/whites.

I am an aspiring wildlife camerman. Bummer about the 240 not being adequate... does anyone know how they manage to get such incredible slow motion shots in the high quality nature docs? would something like an Atomos help sharpen the image by allowing 240 in 2K RAW?
@MediaDivision5 жыл бұрын
Look at the date of this video… it is old and much has been with FW updates since. The internal recording of high FPS has been vastly improved and you get internal 4K 60fps the 2K RAW with shogun looks good and has been improved since: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYWtqq2PiN2leKs For super high fps you have to go with a Phantom (usually rental) or you just wair a coiuple of years. The Kinefinity MAVO LF has very nice RAW high FPS options (crops, too)

looking pretty good! I was wondering what settings you used concerning internal noise reduction especially in the 120fps shots.To me the softness of the image didn't look like a compression issue (no artifacts etc.) but rather than a problem with the level of internal noise reduction that was applied. I might be wrong but I'd still be interested in your settings and how the EVA handles noise reduction internally in general! Cheers and thanks for your great content!
@MediaDivision7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Lukas… I never use any internal noise reduction and as far as I know, the EVA is on no NR in all settings by default. I applied Resolve NR to about 3 scenes in the hole pice as the where underexposed and a bit grainy… still usable as you can see.

Hi Nicholas, thanks for this great informative video. I also own an EVA1 and also like it. I am appreciating your effort in the community, keep it up! I love the detail in the footage you show in your video. And I have a question about it. On 22:49 you show the difference in H264 LONG GOP and PRORES HQ in a splitscreen. The PRORES HQ is far more detailed. How did you get this result? Did you shoot PRORES HQ internally or on the external recorder (shogun)? Or did you do this with grading? What can I do to get this nice detailed footage? Thanks in advance!
@MediaDivision7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the flowers Jos… the ProResHQ was obviously recorded on the external recorder (Shogun Inferno via HDMI) as EVA can't record ProRes internally?! I can't tell where you see more detail… to me, both look the same… that is true even before KZbin compression. Some minor mushiness comes from KZbin compression and is visible on both sides of the split screen. I didn't do anything special to the footage. In the grade, I added a bit of "unsharp mask", but only on scenes in the main film (so not in the comparison). Detail comes from the lens and resolution… sharpness is something that is perceived and must be added in the grade if wanted (I usually don't as cinematic image is soft). That is why GH5 "looks" sharper. Sharpness is applied before recording (even at -5). Good luck

Consider it non existent. Even the simple push focus does not work reliable for me. If you have to have auto focus Canon has the best. Cine cams usually don't have auto focus at all. @MediaDivision6 жыл бұрын
What has sharpness to do with frame rate? GH5 does not let you film without sharpening (even at -5). Typical for a prosumer camera. I rather choose myself, how much sharpening I apply. How is the Gh5 a drag? it is so small and light? BMPCC is smaller but come on... it is a completely different kind of camera.

Is there any benefit to having a relatively high naive iso? Am i right in saying you you can't go before that native iso?
@MediaDivision7 жыл бұрын
a "native" ISO provides you with the ideal setting for any given sensor. Gaining a signal will cause the colors to shift and the Dynamic range to get less. The 2500 ISO read the signal at full DR and with same color fidelity as the 800… but is not as clean. I don't knoe what "before" means, but if you are talking about "lower"… yes of course. You can shoot 400 ISO or 1000 ISO coming from both native ISOs. Of course: If you want to shoot at 1200 ISO it is better to go to 2500native and go down from there. If you want to shoot below 800, use the native 800 and go down from there… hope that helps.

2K 240fps Raw to ProRes (on Shogun Inferno)... as read from Joscha Mola out of Newshootter But how much pixels are skipped there ? 3 of 4 ?... The crop @240fps is 1.4... so it reduces frame from S35 to M4/3. So will the better codec be useful ? Wait & see.
@MediaDivision7 жыл бұрын
That info has been stated to be false by Panasonic reps... but as RAW is under development, things are open. Nobody knows the methods of achieving 240, but it probably uses pixel binning or line skipping... and yes... M4/3 crop size. The "better" codecs are All-I. Good for some things... neglectable for others, as you can see here in my ProRes vs. long GOP

As far as I have pieced it together, the apparent sharpness difference is due to the gh5 not having an olpf whereas the eva1 does have one. This leads to a loss in sharpness but also a reduction of aliasing and other artifacts onthe sensor. It is a less overly sharp look geared towards a cine look (all the cine cams have an olpf: alexa, f55/65, red stuff, a7s, varicam). In fact, I find the eva1 to have the least amount of artifacts so far (no colored pixel halation so far), except for maybe the alexa (which is a little less sharp).
@MediaDivision7 жыл бұрын
Sure… more resolution in general makes a softer perceived image as well… I know it is counterintuitive

I would like you to shoot the same shot with gh5 in vlog and eva 1 in vlog and grade them the same. That would be interesting, I'm thinking there would not be much difference.
@MediaDivision7 жыл бұрын
there is one towards the end (20:00)… and no. I do love my GH5… I shot this review with a GH5 and that should tell a lot. Depending on the subject and the grade, every cam can look like the other. that is true for a GH2 and a Arri65 just as well. You can already see how differently EVA and the GH5 handle highlights from me filming myself in in the house and Eva giving a wide shot. Dynamic range us just so much better. Same for lower light. Gh5 would have struggled given the f.6 Tele. Again, that will depend on the contend. The higher end you go, the more difference price/IQ is diminishing. You could say the exact same thing comparing an EVA and a RED Weapon.
@MediaDivision7 жыл бұрын
You might find this interesting… c200 vs EVA vs GH5 vs Varicam LT. Considering the price difference, the GH5 hold up great, and some may even prefer the punchy GH5 look... the real quality lies in her skin. EVA/Varicam render her skin nicely and pleasant with a soft highlights rolloff. GH5 is a bit harsher and varies in the skin depending on the exposure. vimeo.com/243092844

No internal ProRes…You can record 4k 60 10bit ProResHQ via Atomos recorder. ProResHQ does not give IQ advantage over the internal h264. If you are into ProRes for easy editability, the 400mbps All-I will do the same job. The container is mp4 and container doesn't matter what so ever, whats inside is the same.

@MediaDivision7 жыл бұрын
It has a barely working "push to focus"… nothing I would want to call autofocus
@VividVisual7 жыл бұрын
Ahhh I see. That's very unfortunate. This was something I was really looking forward to. It seems as to be exactly like every other camera that is comparison with price range difference. Pay a couple extra thousand for a different camera with autofocus, usually Canon in this case C300 M2, or deal with the manual focus. For moving or follow focus shots, autofocus is so essential or else you you may miss a shot. Any opinions between this camera and the Canon I mentioned just to see another perspective?
@MediaDivision7 жыл бұрын
Sure… AF is not reliable… never… not on canon or else as the camera can't know what you would like to have in focus. AF is nice for a very specific niche of filming … if that is your niche and you got the money, go for the Canon c200/c300. If you need fast turnaround, c200 is not so good because of codecs, if you want 60fps 4K the c300 will not do. In the end it comes down to the mage… do you like it or not. I like EVAs image, and she hits the right marks between price, mobility, usability, and IQ… for me.

@bjornweber88097 жыл бұрын

@MediaDivision7 жыл бұрын
Soft image? What are you talking about? Even 360° shutter is "sharp" from a tripod as long as the object is not moving. First: open any BluRay or 4K movie from the last 5 years… and then tell me the image is "sharper" then this (hint: it's not). If you want an eyebleeding "sharp" image turn up sharpness in post. What many people call sharpness is just sharpening applied in post. The detail produced by Eva is amazing.
@bjornweber88097 жыл бұрын
Sorry that's a misunderstanding. I love the image of the eva, but you mentioned a soft image at 12:30 cause of a lack of light.
@MediaDivision7 жыл бұрын
Ahh… got it. The higher frame rates are in deed soft (higher then 60 fps). They are "only" 2K and above 120fps they use sensor crop. Un top of that they abviously use pixel binning or line skipping. 50mbps are to little for details like the hair. This would have looked much better with a higher data rate, different motive (less details) and more light (high fps needs a lot of light). Firmware update will introduce a 200mbit All-I for some improvement. Maybe there will be external options in the future. Until then, the high fps is only so good.

Of course... while you are not in RAW out mode, you can use it just as a monitor with LUT support and record in all flavours of internal codecs to SD cards. You can also record on Shogun in ProRes (HQ) for super simple and quick editing like I did for this.

You mentioned about how "cinema" cameras are rarely sharp. It's not the look they go far. It's true as most cinema cameras use a simple 1:1 RGGB readout. But think about it...a 1:1 RGGB readout has a green channel that is HALF 4k resolution. (really think about that folks!) Even worse,..the blue and red are only one QUARTER 4k resolution. How can the industry call any camera "4k" when it's best channel is nowhere near 4k resolution. It's 1/2 raster supplemented with two 1/4 raster channels. That's crap! lol The EVA-1's green channel is approaching full raster 4k for green and 1/2 raster for red and blue. Technically speaking, the EVA-1 is the closest thing we have today to a REAL "4k cinema" camera outside of RED. (RED and Arri 65 are very sharp cinema cameras so I guess they break that idea too)

You are aware that the human eye has way less cone cells for color reception then rod cells? You are aware that when using 4:2:2 a full color matrix would be slashed in halve and further down for 4:2:0? Al that makes sense because the eye is what it is. In a final result, you couldn't tell a full color matrix from 4:2:2… or 4K from 3K for that matter. I found this very very enlightening. The DoP from "The last Jedi" proofs in this, that we are running in the wrong direction for marketing reasons. yedlin.net/ResDemo/

Certainly,. Mr.Bryce Bayer worked for Kodak and figured the RGGB concept of allocating double the green channel pixels over the red and blue based on the way the human eye perceives color. But,...look at Sony's 6k sampling and how much incredible detail the A6500 produces. It's jaw dropping. And,...yeah that green channel is full 6k with two half resolution red and green channels. My eyes can certainly see it on my 4k monitors and yeah,...Canon C200 look nice but soft to me. Look an Max Yuryev's shootout here. He really NAILED the 1:1 vs. oversampling argument right between the eyes. I think EVA1 is doing the right thing by using a 5.7k oversample. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqOxpXh7gq6aqLs

Oh,...haha,..here is my own 1:1 4k shootout vs 6k over samping. Can you spot the 6k collected sensor? kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqLZf2B7i5ifb9U

Watch the two Pert Demo I sent you… maybe (and maybe not) you will think differently after that.

Actually another person showed me this link last month. It's spectacular. I really liked it and it was eye opening for sure. I even saved a copy to my HD but check my 6k shootout video too. It at least partially contradicts his findings. I cant explain it. I dont believe this is an in-camera sharpening issue. I believe it's actual "detail". Its a VERY good video though. This guy is all over it,...no doubt. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqLZf2B7i5ifb9U

LG!

I love your work but at same time I also hate the color you put and pull to this vdo.

Thanks... well, you can't argue taste. There is enough color in cinema that I don't like... and I am still developing every day. Filming is a progress and I think I got much better since I made this. Many wrote me that they love the color of this
