On all 3 of our vehicles I change the oil every 4K miles with Mobile 1 full synthetic and I change the front and rear differential, transfer case and transmission flush every 30K miles. I bought my wife our first Subaru last November (2021). We Hate Grey or Black interior so we opted for a color combination for the warm Ivory interior. We really enjoy the color. I bought a dash cover in light tan to match the interior. Our 11 Rav 4WD Limited has the light tan leather as well. Our pickup came with Fugly grey and black interior so I had it reupholstered in red and tan to match the exterior colors. We don’t like how Gutless the 2.5 naturally aspirated engine is and it only gets 29mpg, but that’s life.

Great job taking care of the maintenance so diligently! Having more interior options would be nice. That’s pretty awesome that you had your truck reupholstered. We don’t often get colorful interior like the old days!

I have had two outbacks sofar, and must say the windshields cracked twice. Once on my former outback was by a little stone thrown up by a grass cutting machine a side the road. But last year the crack was suddenly there in the morning mid winter in Switzerland. Can't remember hearing anything the weeks before. But a Subi outback out of 2005! But really like the wilderness looks, here in Europe it's called the cross and is not completely the same looks as the US version. I am looking around to find one in Europe. You mentioned your insurance costs. Before I bought my wife’s Outback (it was her 50th birthday gift), we looked at the Toyota Venza and the Rav limited. The Venza was $1K more a year and the Rav was $700 more a year. Our Outback was only $300 more a year. After buying the Outback we donated her Camry to our church so we stopped the insurance on it. Our auto insurance dropped. We have all 3 of our vehicles and our properties insured through USAA.

I have been considering an Outback, drove a Limited XT this past Saturday and LOVED it. It is a toss up between this car, which I can purchase now or I have also been considering Toyota Rav4 hybrid. Torn between the two totallly different vehicles.
@AutomotiveAnonymous208
@AutomotiveAnonymous208 2 жыл бұрын
Those are both great options! I’ve driven a RAV4 hybrid and thought it was nice. I choose the wilderness because it’s got a much more capable AWD system (and I drive through lots of snow at times), it’s more powerful and less cookie-cutter of a vehicle. I do think the Toyota would be more reliable past 150k miles but I don’t plan to keep this past that so for me those other benefits outweighed it. Good luck with your decision! I’ve posted other outback wilderness content in the last few weeks if any of it could be helpful to you. 😀

Thanks for commenting RJ! It’s an awesome vehicle and I may look into if there’s any treatment options for this type of material down the road. In the past I’ve put seat covers on a few new vehicles I have had, but I’m at the point now of wanting to enjoy the seats myself instead of preserving them for future owners, especially when I don’t know that value in todays market would be at all affected by it. 😀

Some people say their MPGs got batter after some mileage... perhaps there is some kind of "break-in" phase, did you notice that?
@AutomotiveAnonymous208
@AutomotiveAnonymous208 Жыл бұрын
I did actually noticed getting better MPG after several thousand miles. That could have been due to learning how to drive and accelerate it more economically, the first oil change, ensuring to not over fill the gas tank (charcoal filter/emissions related), and on my highway drives this engine does better once it’s really warm like 190+ deg. Hope this helps, and that yours increases! Thanks for watching! 🙂

How does it drive? How does it handle deep snow? Do you hear road sounds from the tires when you drive on the highway? Does it have a cd player?
@AutomotiveAnonymous208
@AutomotiveAnonymous208 2 жыл бұрын
It drives awesome! So smooth and comfortable between the longer wheel base, suspension tuning, and having a lot of tire side wall to cushion the ride. I don’t notice much road noise, but others may be more sensitive than I am to it. Last winter we got about 8” at one time and it handled great. In the neighborhood I would pull over into deep slow, stop, and then practice how quickly it could get out and it felt like it was launching out. If I was doing this on top of ice you just need to keep on the gas lightly for a couple seconds so the car can shift torque between wheels and then it pulled me right out. I’ll do a video this winter with snow! 😀 and no unfortunately this one does not have a cd player! ☹️

TPM sensors going out in the middle of nowhere and windshield wipers had to be replaced with less than 20k miles on vehicle. Back wiper feel off and I gave up with Subaru and just clipped it back on. Who buys a car and tells the truth about how bad it is really. Best mileage on hwy is 24 mpg, no where near 30mpg. You see all the covers and mats, well that didnt come with the xt package. The plastic door panels have to be manually pressed on as hwy speed wants to blow them off. Its just tape holding them on. This probably about normal for any new car. Sounds like you bought a Lemon. The XT will never get 30mpg. Our 2.5 naturally aspirated engine only gets 29mpg & it’s supposed to get 32. All car manufacturers Lie about the mpg. I’m sure when they test them , they’re going down hill with a strong tail wind, or they have the car in neutral for part of the test.

Thanks for commenting Gary! 😊 These are rated to tow up to 3500 lbs and you can install a trailer hitch. I’ve seen them towing smaller boats and campers. Some people just have the dealer install it due to rear bumper removal necessary, others who are just a little mechanically inclined will install their own.

Your fuel mileage has stayed consistent at high 20s? I’m considering getting a 2023 I have a deposit down on a wilderness edition and I was concerned about the mpg. I do a lot of cross country driving at highway speeds, should I expect the same fuel mileage?

Thanks for commenting! I would hope you get the same or better if your traveling looks similar to mine, but I can’t say for certain. Most people are not getting what I get but I also assume they don’t drive as much 60-65mph country roads and as conservatively as I do. I’m actually gonna try and post a video a little bit more about MPG this Friday, stay tuned for that and hopefully it shows more of what my driving is like to help in your considerations of the wilderness! 😀

It has the look that I like, and what I would have likely done modification wise. Although the Limited and Touring offer slightly more upscale creature comforts the Wilderness is already the nicest vehicle I’ve owned, and it’s the one I like to look back at when I park it! 😉 may or may not truly use the Wilderness off road capability but it gives me confidence driving through unplowed roads sometimes on early morning drives to work.

Turbo add lots more parts lots more heat, wear and tear and points of failure, under load you need extra gears and terrible gas mileage anyway, I fail to see the attraction.

Very true! Usually it would seem class leading engine/performance spec vehicles with turbo’s are not known to be the long term reliable option (hence very few turbo Honda’s and Toyota’s until recent years). Living at altitude and knowing I change vehicle experiences often I’m personally not as concerned with this vehicle since the engine is more over built than previous turbo Subaru’s.
