The sticky lens is the control surface being smushed from a circle to an oval. I worked at a tv station with the really long high quality zooms. A tripod leg would give way on a big camera with the big lens. We couldn't afford repairs after so many so I took one and disassembled all the way down to the zoom ring, found replacement part online, replaced and somehow managed to put back about 30 layers of lens back together. I had a special room I setup where I could see any dust and blow it away or clean the inside lens elements. A clean room would have been best but that wasn't happening so I did my best and saved about 3 or 4 lenses.

I've owned and used a 2 lens set of 20-55 and 50-135 for a while now and the longer lens is definitely the funkier one in terms of sharpness, bokeh and overall look. However, they retain focus and don't breathe at all when zooming when you have calibrated them to your camera (In my case two URSA cameras). The 20-55 suffers from chromatic aberrations on the edges of the frame. For video work they perform very well, but I find the 50-125 a little soft when filiming classical concerts in dimly lit churches, where I have to expose fully open.

Thank you for sharing your experience with the lens set. It's wonderful to hear that you have found them to be suitable for video work. After reading your comment, I realized that I may have noticed some softer shots when using the 50-135 lens. Previously, I attributed this to the URSA camera's limitations in low-light situations, but now I believe I may have been mistaken. I am definitely going to conduct some test shots with a focus chart to compare the results, thanks for the insight!

@@OBP_ cool! They surely have character and some of my favorite shots have been captured by them. They would most likely be at home in narrative settings. Especially the longer one.

Im between DZO film set and tokina zoom set. Altough the tokina 25-75 is crazy expensive, whole set togheter (11-135) is priced the same as dzofilm set (12-125), it sucks cause i haveno option of testing tokina out and there is close to zero comparison on youtube
@OBP_
@OBP_ Жыл бұрын
I recall that we faced a similar dilemma between choosing the DZO and Tokina, but ultimately opted for the DZO due to its greater availability and affordability in our location (UK). I'm going to try get hold of a Tokina and create a comparison video as it is likely a common issue that people encounter.

Would have been interesting the check how they compare dealing with depth. One reason I don't like Zeiss lenses is their flat/compressed image (unlike Cooke) - perfect if you go for claustrophobic scenes - but otherwise .... Frm what you said seems like a fair deal tome .... IF you have the money. ;)

Great video! We are thinking of getting a kit. I noticed you had a "cage" for a Zhiuyn crane that looked really nice, which one is that? All the best / Markus - WCV

I highly recommend making the investment, as it has been one of the best we've made. We've noticed a much bigger improvement in our output by upgrading our lenses, rather than our camera bodies. For the Zhuyin we use the SmallRig Ring. However, we have noticed a minor issue where the base tends to become loose after a few shoots, and requires tightening.

@@OBP_ Thank you for your quick reply! Definitely keen to upgrade our lenses as soon as possible. Ok, perfect. Will look in to getting the Smallrig ring for the Zihyun crane. Thanks a lot and keep up the great work! /Markus - WCV

Ha ha. Sadly we only ever learn from making mistakes! Never the best idea to be setting kit up in a moving vehicle, let alone with the camera hanging outside! 🙂 Must have been a lucky bounce!

You should consider moving to PL mount, that would never happen with a PL mount lens. "Stills" mounts like EF or RF are not really suited for serious production work
@OBP_
@OBP_ Жыл бұрын
that's a great point! I never thought about swapping out the mount to PL, but it definitely seems like a smart move going forward.

I would suggest DZO Octopus PL mount. I have the E mount version and while the first one way too tight of a fit. The second one that came in fit tight on my A7siii couldn't be more happy.

I would also suggest using lens support for heavy and/or long lenses like this. Without it you’re causing the ef mount to flex and eventually break. Plus, it’s a good redundancy to ensure your lens will be safe if you keep using ef and experience mount malfunction or user error.
