Absolutely amazing. I was really wondering whether to get the farpoint 40 + a daypack or the farpoint 55. Great to see that going the route of the 40 + a daypack is a waste of money unless you have a very niche need for a daypack with features that the includes one doesn't offer

brilliant video very helpful, I went travelling last year with the farpoint 40 in India and it was perfect. Was running on the limit in terms of space though. I want to visit some colder regions in India this and I will need a jacket and trousers instead of shorts. Buying a daypack to add onto the farpoint is a much better idea than just buying a bigger backpack. Especially, if you aim to do day hikes, you will need a smaller daypack for carrying snacks and water. So this video was very helpful, thank you !

Love the breakdown video! Thanks for posting. Based on the bag updates, I feel like the perfect system would be to get the Farpoint 40, and order the daypack separately since they only changed the laptop sleeve location to the back of the bag on the 40. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on this and which system (40 + daypack; or 55) you prefer if traveling with a laptop!
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels Жыл бұрын
Thanks! If I was carrying a laptop I would go with the 40. The placement closer to your back will be more comfortable. I can't imagine carrying a 55L pack with a heavy laptop that far from your back.
@alexblank1913
@alexblank1913 Жыл бұрын
@@OneBagTravels As an owner of the old 55L, I would disagree with this. I've found it much more comfortable to keep the daypack on my front instead of combining them on my back because the weight distribution is better and because it ends up very bulky when used as a single unit. The updated bag is even deeper, so the total distance from your back will be even more exaggerated, thus making it even less comfortable to use in that configuration. I would much prefer to have my laptop on my stomach under my 15L than on my back under my 40L, where it would be under much greater pressure from sharing space with the contents of my big bag. Keeping it in the daypack is better both for me and my laptop. Also worth mentioning that OBT is using a 15" laptop, and a heavy looking one at that, so the effects he experiences from the weight of it will be greater than what an average person will experience, as 13.3-14" laptops are much more common.
@deliverydoctor
@deliverydoctor 10 ай бұрын
@@alexblank1913 That's what OBT is saying. If you are going to wear both of the 55L bags on the back, it would be very uncomfortable b/c of weight distribution. Suggesting to wear the daypack in the front will solve that problem but it would look kinda weird.
@nat-lj8kt

40L is more versatile if you have a laptop. You can choose where to put your laptop. If you decide to mount smaller backpack to your front then yoy have more easy access pouches etc. Carrying both on the front and back is not reasonable sometimes. (Also not reasonable to fully pack 40+15L and carry on back, the balance is wrong.) You keep 15L by your side and mostly with essential travel stuff on the plane. Then you use both bags to travel ro your location but switch to 15L for daily excursions (which may be too small but then you can always empty your cubes from the 40L and use it as daily carry when you need the space)

After seeing other videos that weren't this in depth I ordered the Fairview 40 and Daylite Plus. The daypack in the 55 setup is apparently not great per other reviews. I also ordered a Cotopaxi Allpa 28 as it fits the personal item dimensions but gives you 28L instead of 18L. I'll play with attachment and send the list lloser back. Actually, I think this channel did a review of this lack so maybe there's material for a video? Perhaps attaching a couple of other excellent personal item packs to the 40? Thanks for this great, clear video on the 40 and 55! You really confirmed I've made the right choice!

It appears that the new Farpoint 40 got slightly larger (1" longer) than the old one, I just measured my 2016 Farpoint 40 at roughly 21". Next time I visit the store I'll test if I can fit the contents of my Farpoint 55 SM into that new Farpoint, the added laptop sleeve is a welcome change.

I just replied to your other comment, but I'll repeat it here for others to see. My 15" Dell Inspiron fits with about 2" to spare on the length and 1.5" on the width. Maybe the Alienware is just a bigger or fatter laptop?

I think Osprey wants you to carry the day pack on your chest, and not attached to the main pack. If connected to the back of the main pack, it would exceed the carry-on limit. So I think either on your chest if full or packed in a suitcase empty, and then used for getting around town after settling in the hotel. If full, you can stow it under the seat in front of you.

If I understand correctly, the new 40L have the attachment on the front shoulder, right? but all the daypacks you described have the front attachment or only the fairpoint model? thanks a lot!

Yeah, adding two packs to the back can make this bag very back heavy. Don't want to be stuck in the airport on your back like a turtle! And yes, both the 40 and 55 have the front straps. But only the Farpoint/Fairview daypack has the attachment buckles.

I've seen it both ways. Having kids with a lot of extra gear it's difficult to pack down into a single backpack so I can see it being helpful for that. However I've also seen many solo travelers that are just loaded down with way too much stuff and could just get rid of some of it.

Very helpful video. One question though. Any tips on what feature to look for (perhaps that system has a specific name) if I want to attach a daypack from a different brand to the farpoint 55 in kangaroo style (meaning attaching the daypack to the front)?
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 8 ай бұрын
If you're putting a backpack on the front of the 55 you have to use one that fits their buckles, or you can use any pack and put it over your shoulders. I'd say the biggest issue is accessibility, you want pockets on the top/sides that you can get to easily without taking the pack off. Also if you're planning on carrying a second bag, I would look into slings or larger hip packs. I think the double backpack style is awkward and difficult to put on/take off. A large hip pack can carry just as much as a small backpack but it's much easier to use with a backpack. Same with sling, the cross-body style doesn't conflict as much with the carry style of a backpack, plus I think it looks more natural to have a backpack plus sling rather than double backpack.

How would you compare the 40 with the Ula dragonfly? I have a techonaut 30 right now which is great but I’m considering switching to something a bit more hiking/outdoors oriented & with some more exterior functionality (while working as a carry on / personal item travel backpack). Stuck trying to decide between the farpoint 40 vs dragonfly
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 11 ай бұрын
Dragonfly is probably more like the Porter than the Farpoint because of the duffel style panel design and simpler back padding. Farpoint is going to be much more comfortable to carry, but more bulky, more pockets etc. Dragonfly is a very simple pack but also very lightweight.

Too bad they removed the external pockets on the main bag for bottle or quick access items. This now requires the day pack to maintain the versatility. @OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels Жыл бұрын
Yes, you can attach a daypack to the front of both the Farpoint 40 and 55. However it has to bee a daypack with attachment buckles. As far as I know the only one that works is the Farpoint daypack, which is the one that comes with the 55.

So it seems that they phased out the Porter 46 which I have and like alot but could have used the Farpoints harness system to be ideal. The new Farpoints just comes in 3 style choices now, 2 carryon and the trek which I'm on the fence on if the carryon versions are worth the versatility and 46l volume (packable daypack) with lots of organization?

@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 22 күн бұрын
Osprey 40 and 55 are very similar packs, biggest difference being the attached daypack and placement of laptop compartment. 55 laptop is stores in the daypack, and 40 is stored on the bag. If you're carrying a laptop I'd probably go with the 40 because it's going to sit closer to your back and be more comfortable. Laptop sleeve is very well padded, so the padding does take up room, but I wouldn't say a lot. Allpa is a great pack as well, but a different style, clamshell from the side instead of panel/dufflel opening like the Farpoint, better organization and built in packing cubes can be nice. The carry comfort on the Farpoint is going to be better than Cotopaxi, would could be important depending on how much you plan on carrying the bag.

Picked up the FP55 back in 2017. Used it in our travels to Thailand, New Zealand, & Ireland. LUV the size and the day pack and we've added a 24L fold-able day pack. Just GREAT for international travel. BUT ... back then the 55 was a tad bit longer then the FP40. When running around the USA ... the FP40 has been our GoTo bag with the 24L fold able pack. Just wish ... Osprey would have put the front carry day pack idea of the clips on the FP40 so one could use the FP55 day pack. The other point I like the FP40 is the use of the sling. Wish the FP55 had that adaptation. Now 7 years later .... the 2 bags basically the same size ..... just NOT for me. Those "Loops" to hold the different bags ..... just don't seem like they'd hold up. Just glad I've got the older version! Have found that ROUND water bottles are NOT the best choice. Have gone to the 750L plastic Whisky bottles that flatter. It fits VERY well in either the day or regular FP40 pack.

Great comparison, very detailed. Any opinion on the old version of the 55 vs. the new version? Did they improve design or just change and make it more complicated. I never had the older model of the 55, but for the 40 I think they improved it. They moved the laptop sleeve closer to the back, and gave it an adjustable harness so no sizes now. The old one had those weird front mesh pockets that were too small to hold a water bottle, they got rid of that and now the 40 has a gear pouch.

Yeah you can squish it down to 20 cm, just depends on what you have in there. My strategy is to take out the large bulky clothes and wear them onto the plane, like a jacket, or you can even wear multiple shirts if you have to just to get pack the gate checkers. You can just take it off and put it back in the bag once you get in the plane. Your bag only needs to meet those dimensions when you're going through the gate.

Hi, I'm going to buy a daypack for my farpoint 40. However, I don't know whether it is a good idea to buy the farpoint official daypack as opposed to a standard Osprey daypack which I can attach through the fabric loops instead of the compression straps. My bag tends to be quite full when travelling, I just done a test by filling my farpoint 40 up and I don't think the compression straps are long enough to justify buying the farpoint daypack. I feel like I would be compromising space just to be able to attach the daypack properly. Even though the attachment for the daylite pack is more awkward, do you think its a better idea purchasing that instead? I wouldn't have to worry about how full my main pack is and I can attach it regardless of size.

I like my older Farpoint 40 combined with a packable daypack. I fit everything into the 40 at the start of the trip, but need the packable daypack for daytime exploration (and between flights to remove some of the congestion from the 40). I’ve switched the packable daypack recently from the Osprey to the Matador 22 for its greater capacity, wider shoulder straps, chest strap and waterproofness, all while still packing into a tiny space. I’ve done 3 month trips to Europe with my cycling and hiking gear with this setup and don’t need anything larger unless the hike requires hiking poles (which means checked baggage). Less is more.

I haven’t tried fitting the two together. I doubt they would be compatible in the sense of buckling together like some of the Osprey non-packable day packs would do with the newer Farpoint 40. The key for me is I want my daypack to be a packable daypack that packs up about the size of a fist. If I wanted two packs that buckle together, Osprey has solutions that look like good ones.

Too bad I did not see this review before. I got the 55L backpack and just returned it because it is not good enough. The amount of straps is annoying, I saw that the old version had zippers to attach one with the other. The daypack is not that nice either, my water bottle is not properly attached, is just a bunch of big pockets inside and no way to properly organize stuff inside. The other problem, is that there’s no point on attaching the daypack to the main backpack once it is full, the daypack would be too full and heavy and it will be like hanging from the main backpack.

That means you will have to put your laptop in your daypack and that will shift the load (same problem people had with the old version of the 40). I agree with @PracticalMinimalist that 40 + daypack (specifically the Farpoint Daypack for ease of attachment) is the better combo (but pricier), and I would personally recommend 40 + a packable daypack (or at least something that folds flat). Cherry on top would be something with the same kind of top passthrough that the farpoint daypack for easy attachment if needed.

THANK YOU FOR SHOWING THEM ACTUALLY PACKED!! Below are my thoughts between my Farpoint 40 and Farpoint 70. The Farpoint 40 seems to be slightly over carry on sizes by about a half inch, but could be a failure in measurement by me. I'm actually combining my Farpoint 40 with a daypack off my Farpoint 70. The 55 seems to be the 40 + 15L daypack (minus the laptop compartment, which I like, because the laptop weight close to my back makes it nicer to carry) The 70 is an actual 55L backpack (and 26" tall!) which can fit so much stuff I have 1/2 to 1/3rd of it empty at my max comfortable weight - it has a 15L daypack which I'm assuming is identical to the one on the 55. So for me, the 70 I'd only take if I'm ok with checking it (usually just have clothes in it anyway) - you can sometimes sneak it on as a carry on but then you're a bin stuffer and it doesn't always work. There are some weird things about both of these bags though. The 70 makes it so you can't really look up super well with the way it sits on your back, but the hip belt is in a lower more comfortable position for me. The 40 the hip belt/load distribution feels a bit worse than the 70, but it is still fine. The BIGGEST thing for me though, was that the area at the top of the straps, due to packing in and being NONADJUSTABLE, is too close together. The straps come out in a semicircle and are attached to eachother in one piece, so the straps rub on my neck which is pretty uncomfortable until you get used to it or fiddle with it for a bit. I don't understand why they missed this. They should be detachable from each other and able to spread out a bit if you have a wider neck. Every other backpack I've owned either has the straps split apart sooner so the split is below your neck on your back, or they are TWICE as far away from each other than the osprey.
