Great video. Your use of packing peanuts is awesome. I always figured the bag manufacturers exaggerated a bit, nice to see an actual demonstration of bag volume.
@lanceklein2746
@lanceklein2746 2 жыл бұрын
I agree about the peanuts - would be nice to do this for every bag and create a database of listed vs measured. But I understand that is a tall order, especially since "what can it fit" is more important in the end. I really appreciate that you do so many packing videos since it's sometimes difficult to imagine how my stuff would fit in a given bag seeing how there are so many variations between manufacturers on pocket layout, opening style, etc. (think Pakt vs Minaal)

This is so informative and answers my latest travel-pack question. I just returned from a 5-week, 8-country Balkans tour, with only a carry-on backpack (the much-reviewed and much-praised Cotopaxi Allpa 35L travel backpack) which made it so much easier (compared to using a standard carryon-size rolling luggage or heavier (40-50L) backpack) to handle flying/airport connections, same-country and border-crossing on trains and buses and of course a lot of 30min-to-hourlong walks on urban cobblestone alleys and hilly streets. Made a huge difference in mobility and allowed me to be flexible and opportunistic. Now I am ready for the next step in downsizing (for an even more comfortable trip) - a similar-length budget trip with an even stricter personal item-only backpack. I was not sure if I needed to buy a new backpack small enough to be personal item-sized but large enough to carry more than 20L, since my other regular backpacks are all a shade larger than the 18-14-10inch (or tighter) personal item limits. I am so glad that you demonstrated that it is easy to use a small-ish but still somewhat regular-sized frameless backpack (with 24-28L capacity) that (if not fully cramped) can be "squooshed" down to meet the 18-14-10inch (or tighter) limit. I would add that there is a benefit to using a slightly larger but squooshable backpack - assuming the personal item-only traveller would be wearing some of the heavier/thicker clothing items and stuffing pockets with some gear to make the pack fit for boarding purposes (as I plan to), the "excess" on-body stuff can be shoved into the not-completely-packed bag after boarding.

One challenge with getting the right "personal item" fit for underseat stowage is that in many cabin configurations that space is not exactly the same size and shape for aisle/center/window seats and further gets partly occupied with equipment boxes for entertainment systems or power ports.

I've been designing, manufacturing and selling backpacks for 20 years. We don't rely on bag measurements for calculating pack volume. I do use a method similar to yours. Except that we use dry beans for fill. They are smallrr and fill the voids better. When calculating volume we don't add in the volume of external pockets. This includes water bottle, shoulder harness and hip belt pockets. Taken together,they can add several additional liters of storage.
@OneBagTravels

I've seen other companies using 10mm plastic balls to estimate volume, which is probably similar to beans. Probably more accurate than packing peanuts.

That would be good, seems more based on airline, like European and US budget airlines seem more restrictive on size, but Asian airlines care more about weight. I just try and stay within the limits as much as possible, take stuff out of the bag and wear it if I think I'm over, and then just genarally be nonchalant about going through the gate agent, never had anyone check me but maybe that's just luck so far.

Great video! I really liked how you explained the difference in bag sizing and how that translates to how much stuff it holds! Unfortunately I don't really understand your final point where you said something like "many people travel with two bags (one 45 liter carry-on, one ~20 liter personal item) ... if you slim down you gear you can travel with just one bag". If you take all the t-shirts out of your bag you can fit the rest in a 20 liter bag? The bag at the end is clearly overstuffed (as you showed before) and at 10 inches wide, that doesn't meet really any personal item size (as shown in your own table)

Wow! Best review ever. This popped up on my TV feed and I rushed to my phone to like and subscribe and read the other comments. I have several 40-45 Lt backpacks but I just got the G4Free (Amazon $40) Mountaineer 35L pack for upcoming Europe trip. Trying to go personal item only in case I want to fly on budget airlines. It has an incorporated pack cover in a bottom pocket and there is extra space there. It also has under straps like hiking backpacks for tent/closed cell mat etc. I ordered a 3-pack of round bottom silnylon (Wise Owl) dry bags. I have stored the 5 and 10 L bags in that pocket. The plan is to be able to pack stuff (I always shop) in a dry bag and strap it to the underside and return with a carryon size and a personal item. I’m a 5’, female, senior so the smaller pack size makes sense. I have small wheeled cases but with be staying at hostels and need to navigate cobblestones and stairs. Looking forward to finding more of your videos.

Great idea for a video! The packing peanuts were a great visual. I’m looking at one bag travel. I’m okay with paying the fee for a carryon bag if I have to because some airlines such as Ryanair are too restrictive with the size of their free personal item (40x25x20 cm or 16x10x8 in.) But I still want my carryon bag to be able to fit under the seat ahead in case the overhead bins are full. Is the size of your wooden box (18x14x8”) a good parameter for this?
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 2 жыл бұрын
I think 18x14x8 is a good starting point, it's a common size for US airlines. If you're flying on a more restrictive airline you could underpack so it fits in the spacer, or just pay the extra fee and use this as your 2nd bag

@OneBagTravels Жыл бұрын
Cotopaxi is good, and the Allpa would work for most airlines as a carry on. One thing you need to be more aware of with airlines in Asia is many of them have more strict weight restrictions than US/Europe. It's common to see 7-8 kg (~15-17 lbs) limits for a carry-on for an economy ticket on almost every major airline. So size may not matter here nearly as much as weight. And yes, a small daypack or sling are both great as a daypack.

Do you know if the Cotopaxi 35L will fit in Air Baltics required 21.6535 x 15.748 x 7.874 inches? (55 x 40 x 20 cm)
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 6 ай бұрын
Allpa specs are 22 x 12 x 10" (56 x 30 x 25cm), which is a little over the limit, you coudl probably get away with it if you don't pack the bag completely full.

@@OneBagTravels Do you have a trick for how to know before we go if our bag will fit? I packed 8kg into my Cotopaxi 35L and really don’t want to have to check it. It’s my only bag for a 35 day trip to Europe. I leave Saturday.
@OneBagTravels

@@karenwendt5514 There's really no way to know for sure in advance if your bag will fit, but there's a few things you can do to ensure you're fine getting throught the gate agent. I'd start by packing everything you'll bring for your trip in the Allpa and see how full it is. Try and get your bag so it's not bulging full, like 80-90% full is good. You'll probably pick up souveniers, need to carry food and water etc. on your trip, so it's best to start not overpacked. Next, at the airport before you board your plane, put on as many of your bulky clothes as you can, if you're bringing a sweater make sure you're wearing it or tie it around your waist, you can also put any smaller bulky gear in your pockets. Clothes you're wearing don't count, it's just the bag. So make sure the bag is as small as possible. You just need to get past the gate, once you're on the plane you can put stuff back in your bag. Next, just be casual when you board, if you think your bag looks big carry it over one shoulder on the opposite side of the gate agent so it doesn't look as big. They're looking for bags that are obviously over the limit, so if your bag looks small, you just stroll past casually and there's no need for them to look twice at you.

Which are the bags you personally choose to use? (and for which occasion)
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 2 жыл бұрын
I use a different bag almost every time I travel, but I tend to like bags that are ~30L and lightweight with decent organization. Like the ULA Dragonfly, Cabin Zero Military 28, Patagonia Black Hole Pack, Evergoods CPL 24, and Thule Aion 28 are also two of my favorites. I'll go smaller (25L) if I'm traveling somewhere warm where I don't need bulky clothes, and will go larger (35L) if it's winter and I need a jacket, hat etc.

For the cabin zero pack, did you exclude the outer zipper compartment in the volume measurement test? By the way, I still think you are the most practical and informative bag reviewer out there.
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 2 жыл бұрын
I filled all the external pockets of these bags as best I could. The outer pocket on the CZ bag is quite thin so when the main compartment is packed you can't fit much in there, I think I had maybe a few handfuls of peanuts in that pocket when I filled it.

@@OneBagTravels That's interesting. I have this pack and had the Cotopaxi 28L and found they both pretty much packed the same amount of stuff. Except the Cabin Zero Military 28L was so much easier to pack.

The Cotopaxi is nicer and was more comfortable. I took it on one trip and while it was nice it just wasn't enough for me to keep it. I realized I don't like how clamshell backpacks pack by splitting the volume in half. I always struggled where to put in a second pair of shoes. I didn't struggle as hard to put the same amount of stuff in the Cabin Zero. I kept the CZ knowing it will pack what I need and still meet personal item size dimensions. Plus it'll make a better day pack being lighter and more compact. I also purchased the Thule Aion 28 which I prefer over the Cotopaxi.

If I fly, I'm checking baggage. I have one regulation underseat, one regulation bin, and one duffle. All are overweight because vintage silks roll tightly and are heavy. I have money to pay overages. These are irreplaceable vintage Ralph silks and boots.

@@OneBagTravels I am flying BA again in May and i have been struggling with their odd size personal bag size, i have got two but i was the max capacity, i am happy with my case as it is smaller than the average size carry on but is 52 L but i need the extra capacity as i can't check a bag as firstly i am ambulant disabled and struggle with big bags and as it is a themed music week with a fancy dress night , a wig or hat night, an all white night(i hate white clothes lol) and a carnival where we are in the parade, as we see the same people daily as the events are all organised in the hotel and coaches taking us to events you can't re wear and the carnival day goes into a meal in town then a party in town ... so day outfits and night time outfits daily for 10 days including two travel days i can rewear my travel outfit if i want but it will need to be washed in the basin in the studio apartment bathroom or the sink in the mini kitchen so i can't just replace the outfits if my case is lost , so i need the largest capacity personal item that you know of within the British airways rules, weight doesn't matter much but i need a luggage sleeve on it and it must be grey or black to match all of our other luggage and so my sons can use it when they fly BA ,I am London based .... any suggestions please??

@@tijay8507 That's a unique packing scenario! I'm in the Galapagos with abysmal internet so I can't really look at bags, but if you check my bag table you may be able to find something. You could also look into rolling luggage, those are much easier to haul around if you have a large suitcase. And maybe mix and match wardrobe pieces, so your outfit looks different but has 2-3 common bottoms/tops? docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1xIMBaSlyFbQ7FSU5nKXn8VICaOkASUOR9HaKxRYAheE/edit?usp=sharing
