It's a cultural thing. They remain quiet not because they don't know the lyrics (a fair amount can speak English) but because it's the respectful thing to do.

The audience actually did choose to be quiet. You can see that some people were shouting at the beginning. But they chose to held it because they wanted to listen to the beautiful voices, instead of ruining it with their voices. The video itself is telling you that.

Yes yes to Liam’s back muscles, Louis’ fingers and hearing Louis’ voice above the harmonies. But I feel like every single voice is crucial here, there are high and low harmonies, which are so well blended that you almost can’t differentiate. Still if you listen out for Harry, Zayn or Niall’s tone, you can hear them. Liam’s voice (I feel) is like the musical instrument, ensuring a continuous flow in the overall sound. Needless to say these harmonies are so beautiful.
