They sound so good together. Liam = biggest range, carrys the high harmonies. Zayn = the runs, not just high notes but natural at ad libs. Harry = adds power and depth to the songs, rockier voice, lots of character to his voice. Niall = beautiful tone and so good at harmonizing with all the boys. And Louis = my favourite, such a unique and underrated voice, you can pick him out even when they are all singing, carrys the choruses adding layers of rasp and sweet high tones, sound particularly good harmony with Harry and Zayn.

in my own opinion i think when it comes to singing the chorus with all of them, louis' voice always prevails specially during accoustics. zayn and harry have a great vocal power when it comes to high notes. liam has a beautiful register voice in every verse and his falsetto and niall has a very distinctive and unique voice, he could do both the low and high register of his voice are beautiful to hear.

omg I'm so glad louis is getting the appreciation he deserves. actually I'm so glad that this video exists... in their albums, you can't really hear the distinctiveness of the harmonies and the voices. recording studios edit it to blend the voices together with the melody of the song as the strongest voice. in acoustic and live versions of the songs, you can easily hear the harmonies and how each member has their own uniqueness to the song. - louis: the main guy --- he drove the melody and created the solid tone and ground for the other members to harmonize around. - niall: the support --- niall is usually the guy to support a part; whether that's another voice to add to the melody, or helping out with the higher or lower harmony. niall has a really soft toned voice so he can also smooth out any roughness in the melody which is especially helpful in ballads. - liam: upper and/or lower harmony --- liam has incredible range and he filled in the high notes when zayn left the band. liam is usually found harmonizing with niall or louis on their individual solos. niall and louis aren't bad singers, but niall does have a softer tone (liam is there to support the strength of the voice), and louis has more of a grungy and raspy tone (liam is there to smooth it out... especially on the ballads). - harry: solo/lower harmony --- harry (I think) has the most solo time in the band. harry's voice is very melodic and strong in the tenor (a male's higher register) so he can drive his solo into the climax which is the hook (chorus). harry also supports the lower harmony, though he can sometimes lack the strength in the lower notes due to his age in some of the band's older songs. - zayn: belter --- obviously the only thing we need to add to make this band perfect is a belter. we all know (and swoon over) zayn's high notes and belts near the end of a song. this adds variety to the song (bc lets be honest... the ending hook/chorus wouldn't be the same without it). zayn also helps support the upper and lower harmonies like liam if need be.
