And even in this moment, Onegin is only thinking of himself and how he feels. Even though Tatyana is expressing how unhappy she really is with her current life and yet Onegin only cares to know whether or not she still has feelings for him. Selfish to the core despite all the grievances he's gone through and even in this moment at his lowest, he's still as selfish as ever. 🙄 Tatyana did the right thing in sending him away for good.

It is not about being selfish or not. He asked a question deep in her soul: the unquenchable love in their soul. Unfortunately, as she said: it was too late.

@@imobile108 it is abou his total selfishness. His love is questionable, It is what about. He loves himself and feels sorry for himself only not sorry about the relationship. He needs her only to stop feel miserable not because he loves her. A shallow man will be shallow to the end.

Tatyana did the wise thing. Instead of divorcing and being unfaithful to her husband, she chose to remain in her marriage, even if unwillingly. She made the decision to be faithful to her husband and perhaps in time, she will learn to love him in return. As for Onegin, there is no going back. He has no choice but to move on - without Tatyana.

BTW, as a russian, who read in original, in book this scene hits even harder as after Onegin's and Tatjana's dialogue in the garden, at the ball she became more firm and proud, she wasn't in tears while saying that she can't be with him, she said it proudly and without tears. She loved him, as Pushkin said: ------------------------- *I love you* (what's the use to hide behind deceit or double-dealing?) *but I've become another's wife -- and I'll be true to him, for life.''* ------------------------- The reason she couldn't be with Onegin is that: 1) She was married to an officer, leaving him would be a huge disrespect & a shame to both the officer and Tatjana's family. 2) She wasn't sure if Onegin came back not because of his feelings, but because of Tatjana's current position in society. 3) She wasn't sure if Onegin's feelings will live long, as in the garden, when Tatjana was 13 years old, he told her: -------------------------- I'd love you, but inside a day, with *custom*, *love would fade away;* your tears would flow -- but your emotion, your grief would fail to touch my heart, they'd just enrage it with their dart. -------------------------- Not sure if custom is the right word, but in russian he says that not depending on how hard Onegin would love Tatjana, he is simply not intended for love and would "unlove" Tatjana on the next day, and said that theire wedlock (domestic life) would be a torture to both Tatjana's and Onegin's heart: -------------------------- Believe (as conscience is my warrant), wedlock for us would be abhorrent. -------------------------- my respect for reading russian literature

This is a very controversial statement that Tatyana was 13 years old when she wrote a letter to Onegin. She was 17 years old, Pushkin himself reports this in his letter to Vyazemsky. “...I’m amazed how Tanya’s letter ended up in your possession [...] if, however, the meaning is not entirely accurate, then even more so there is truth in the letter; a letter from a woman, 17 years old at that, and in love! .." (Pushkin to Vyazemsky, November 29, 1824)

@@c1nquedea47 thank you for your reply And for your words of strength. “Heart never heals” has different references. Main thing is that even when moving on you can only really fall in love once. You can love other people but never really the same thing. Tati choose to stay with her husband because she knew she hurt more people for a selfish gain. Whereas Onegin was alone and lonely because of his selfish nature. Thats why there is time and place for everything. Tatyana had seen that Onegin destroyed his friendship and sister’s relationship to prove a point that his cynicism was righteous. But it lead him rejecting true love and she was forced to embrace honour and duty. Love Pushkin and love how he respects woman wholesome sensitivity without ridiculing it.

@@idiotaboard5909she also rejects him because he offers her to be his mistress, he still doesn't want her to be his wife. She would gain nothing from that except for a few nights of passion and she would lose everything, her husband, position in high society, stability, and she would lose Onegin too because he would probably leave her along the way after he would grow tired of her. And she would lose herself, she rejects him because it is not in her nature to be a cheater and she cannot betray herself so that he could feel better about himself for a while.
