Thanks for an information dense but easy to understand video covering most of what foreign travellers need to navigate Japan’s sometimes confusing IC payments system. You touched on kids’ IC cards in the Shinkansen chapter near the end but left us wanting to know more. Namely, how does one buy a kids’ IC card? Does a guardian or parent need to attend a みどりの窓口 office with child in tow and some sort of identification for them? Are there kids’ IC cards available? What other sorts of restrictions or tips should families know? Enquiring minds need to know.

As an addendum to this video, not all train stations support IC cards. For example, in Hokkaido, only train stations in Sapporo, Chitose, and Otaru are equipped with IC card machines. For other cities such as Hakodate, Yoichi, and Niseko, you will need to buy regular tickets.

IC cards are for local travel in urban areas. Hakodate has a small IC valid area. For longer distance travel, including travel between 2 cities which accept IC cards, you need to buy paper tickets or passes.

I am in Tokyo. I got a Hello Kitty IC card and bought a 72 hour metro pass. The unlimited metro 72 hours pass is wonderful to travel within the 2 transit company. If it is outside of these 2 companies, I would use my Hello Kitty IC card. After using the subway, I feel like it is easy. As long as Google map provides the correct information. So far Google is correct 98% withe the route. The subway is like a maze. I love to use the unlimited pass because if I enter the incorrect bus routes I could go back out with no issue, but IC card will charge each time in and out.

If I have the digital Suica, when I come to a access point, do I need to have the Suica App or the Apple Wallet already open with the Suica card selected - no video ever explains
@ONEGOODDREAM10 күн бұрын
Thanks for your question! Excellent point! In the Apple wallet, if you select the Suica card, go to Card Details and turn on the Express Transit for the card, it will set the Suica card as the default card payment on the phone. After that, you won't need to open the app or even unlock your phone, just tap your phone to the reader at the entrance and exit gates. if you don't turn on the Express Transit for the Suica card, you need to turn on your phone and open the card in apple wallet to pay.

They only allow the tickets departing and arriving from the station of the Shinkansen journey. My question is what happens if I need to transfer to a local line after arriving at the Shinkansen station, without having to go out and in again at the ticket gate. Eg. I wish to go from Tokyo to Matsushimakaigan. I purchase the base and reservation seat tickets from JR East website from Tokyo to Sendai. How do I transfer to the local line (without a paper ticket) from Sendai to Matsushimkaigan? Thanks in advance.

Hi . Is suica 15:35 works for a bus from Shinjuku to Fuji ? And from Fuji to Tokyo by trains ?
@ONEGOODDREAM9 ай бұрын
hi, it depends on which bus and train you take.
@TheScratchingKiwi10 ай бұрын
Thank you for the extra information. SUICA can be used as currency beyond transport which makes it good for making purchases without carrying money. With Department Stores taking SUICA, that means that amounts on the card can be large and with the refundable SUICA, that makes it easy. The non-refundable SUICA poses a problem: imagine having 5000 yen on it when you are at the airport to leave (and weight limits mean you cannot buy any more things). That is a lot of food and drinks to get the balance to zero before you give your money to JR East! With a ten-year card, the 5000 yen can sit until you travel again.. and you can still use it to buy things. It amazes me that 10-year SUICA are only sold in Tokyo, not the airports or neighbouring cities. It makes it difficult for those who want the card but are not planning to spend a lot of time in Tokyo. I suspect I will spend a day of my holiday hunting for a 10-year card as reports coming back from travellers suggest that 10-year cards are selling out fast.
@slkung110 ай бұрын
Thank you for this clear video - but on the refunds section, I don't believe you covered whether the iPhone Wallet Suica app is refundable? If we add 1000 Yen to the Suica wallet app and don't use it all, can we refund/transfer it back to our Apple Wallet debit card or Apple cash account?
@ONEGOODDREAM10 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for watching!🙏 you're right! that was not included. I will make sure to include it in the updated version of this video! Very useful info! Thanks a lot for letting me know! for now, to your question, you need to have a bank account in Japan in order to get the refund from the Suica card in your Apple Wallet. if that's impossible, the best way is to top up the card little by little and then use up all the money on the card, and remove it from Apple Wallet if you no longer need it.

Instead of buying ticket,can I use suica card riding train from Narita T1 to Shimbashi station?
@ONEGOODDREAMАй бұрын
the suica card can only pay for the basic fare (or passenger ticket). if you take an express train, you need to purchase an express ticket separately. you can use the Suica card to pay for that express ticket at a vending machine or ticket counter.

@@ONEGOODDREAM Thanks for quick feedback...From Narita to Shimbashi..The first train is Keisei Narita Skyaccess and the second is Asakusa line..(same train that's what I read from Google map)...So I have to buy 1 ticket for Skyaccess?and pay as passenger for basic fare for asakusa line?

Does the Passmo passport card have to have a minimum amount of credit to be able to start making a trip? The other day, I wanted to use it and it told me the balance was low. You know exactly what the limit is so that it does not warn you that you have to put money
@ONEGOODDREAM10 ай бұрын
there's not really a limit...the balance just needs to be enough to pay for a trip.

@@ONEGOODDREAM Hi, thanks for the answer. I had 400-500 yen, to be exact, i think it was 420 yen and the trip were less than 240. The problem with this card is that they not refund the money and the mínimum to add is 1000 yen, so i don't know if this is made on purpose to keep the money of the visitors even if You make the exact calculations of your tríps to optimize the credit in your card.

Yoko san. Thank you so much for this video. Since I'm arriving in Osaka, I'll have to get an Icoca card. And since the physical cards are in short supply, it is better for me to download the Icoca app, right? However, the Icoca card is a long term card, so I won't be able to get a refund as my journey ends in Tokyo. So, in summary, don't get a physical Icoca card unless I don't want a refund for the 500Yen.

Hi! yes you're right! it's best if you could get an IC card on your smartphone (Icoca/Suica any card is fine, they work the same). and yes, don't get a physical Icoca card unless you don't want the refund since you won't be able to refund it in Tokyo.

All this headache could be solved by Alipay or an App similar to that 🤣. Hope Japan can reach that in the future

Hey, can you help with the IC card? When I try to download it from Apple Store, the language is all Japanese and I don’t seem to be able to change the language. Do you have the link for it?

I have an Icoca on my iphone. In April on my last day I used the Nankai Rapid Express to KIX airport with the ticket also on the phone. Unfortunately when leaving the station I accidentially held the phone to the ic card reader before a friendly employee showed me the right one. Left Japan two hours later by plane. Now my virtual card in the phone shows »in Progress« , which I read as I‘m now on a train since 1.5 months. What will happen if I come back to Japan in July and how could this be solved? Couldn‘t find anything that looks like customer service in english.

When you come back, just stop by a ticket office and explain to the staff there. they will help you close that trip. after that you can use it as normal. no worries!

Thank you for this video. I have a question about the Kaisei express from Narita to Ueno. Does that also need the extra ticket? Is it the same as the Skyliner express? Thank you.

i just used my suica in my iphone and do it that way. i don't eat on shinkansen, so what i do is to buy tickets on smart ex app and buy tickets there. i usually buy at the front of the shinkansen entrance and buy 5 to 10 minutes before departure. it's just right there what i don't know is if buying in smart ex is cheaper or not and it is not mentioned in this video. either way, i had a great trip last month

Thank you for aa very informative video. We bought our tickets for the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nagano using Ekinet and linked our tickets to our Suica cards. However, we did not know about Smart EX and bought our tickets for the Shinkansen for Kanazawa to Osaka directly on the JR West website. Is it possible to link these tickets to our Suica Card or is it only possible if we bought them through Smart EX? Thank you!
@ONEGOODDREAM8 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for watching!🙏 yes you can also link those tickets to your Suica card on JR West website. it's similar to that of the JR East.
