In this video we compare the new Amazon Echo 4th Gen vs Amazon Echo Dot 4th generation. Amazon just released these two new Amazon Echo devices in October of 2020 and there are some major changes to the Echo lineup.
The biggest change Amazon made to the Echo and Echo dot is that the smart speakers are now spherical vs the previous generation 3 devices which were cylindrical or hockey puck shaped.
Both the Amazon Echo and Echo Dot maintain the same voice assistant features and controls as the prior 3rd generation devices but a few new features have been added.
The Amazon Echo has an additional Zigbee chip built in that allows direct control of some Zigbee devices like the Phillips Hue light bulbs without the need for a separate smart home hub. The Amazon Echo 4th Generation also has a sidewalk 900mhz chip that will allow it to communicate on the long range mesh Amazon sidewalk mesh network designed for future smart home devices. The sidewalk 900mhz network is reportedly designed to be able to communicate with devices up to 1/2 mile away.
Both the Echo and Echo Dot now have forward facing directional speakers vs the older generation having non directional speakers.
The Amazon Echo has 3 speakers, including one 3" woofer and two .8" tweeters. The Amazon Echo Dot has only one smaller speaker.
The Amazon Echo is larger and sounds better than the Echo Dot and has 30 watts of power vs the 15 watts of power in the Amazon Echo Dot.
Both the Amazon Echo and Echo Dot have the same control interface on the top of the devices and the light ring has been located at the bottom of the devices.

Tl, dr: The 3 differences, (1) 3 speakers in echo vs the 1 in echo dot. (2) zigby devices no longer need to use a hub to connect to the echo, u still need the hub for the dot (3) sidewalk network mesh devices can connect to the echo, not to the dot.

In the video, he called out Phillips Hue smart lights that require a smart hub to leverage multiple connected bulbs (for light effects, sync on/off, group control for rooms) and full feature sets for voice activation. This hub is generally more expensive than the individual smart bulbs, but now the lights can be purchased and linked with the Echo 4th gen. I'm thinking this would act as a replacement while providing a loudspeaker, alexa voice controls, and some additional features mentioned. Edit: I have my house set up with WiFi connected lights and products, so they don't directly use a hub, but they have individual accounts and apps that are required to get the full feature sets. These are generally less expensive and sometimes fluctuations in your WiFi can cause the devices to lag, so hub connected devices are may be more reliable (depending on your number of devices and use cases). However, that being said, I was able to set up multiple rooms for the price of one room with the hub devices and I'm very happy with the result!

I watched this video in 2023 and the statement about sidewalk not being in the Echo Dot seems false. Amazon site and Consumer Reports says sidewalk is in Echo Gen 3 and Echo Dot Gen 3 ond newer and can be turned off. New to this and trying to get all the facts right.
