4230 john deere

My father bought a 4230 brand new in 1975. Excellent tractor..........we have well over 10,000 hours on ours with no work done to the engine or transmission. Ours is a four post rops and quad range just like you have. You will really like the tractor. (And yes that is the correct muffler for that tractor. Just replaced ours last year. ) Have fun with it!!

Ive had a 4230 for 28 years ,best tractor i ever owned.They have a thin head gasket you can get for it to make it start a little better or get the head planed down but other than that they are a good reliable tractor. Way to go Wes I llike to see the farmers get good deals on good equipment like you do before the machinery jockeys get their cut out of it .

Your mentioning the backhoe jogged my memory. We did see it when he fixed the broken water pipe, at the least. One of his many that we don't see too often.

I just sold my 4230 it was a nice tractor, we put it on my brothers dyno. and got 94 hp out of it straight pipe and muffled same little muffler I propane injected mine fore tractor pulling and got 125 out of it. Looks like you got a nice one!

Wes that is the correct muffler for the 4230. They did not put the big muffler on the 30 series till the 4230. The man i used to work for had all the 30 series row crop tractors at one time. 4030, 4230, 4430, and 4630. They were all original except the 4630 which had the cab and a chrome straight pipe. The 4030 and the 4230 had that gay small muffler. Actually he replaced it with a 4240 and it had the same small muffler too.

that is the correct muffler and extension for that tractor, my 4240 has the same one.

nice find wes. dad dared me and my brother to find a 100 hp tractor for under $5000. we found a IH 806 with 2700 hours on it (who knows how true it is). only thing wrong with it was it wouldn't shift into high range. all that it needed was a bushing in the shift linkage and whalla we got ourselves a good old work horse with good paint.

Like the other guys said, that sick wheezer of a pipe is original. Any thoughts on turboing it? They had a reputation around here (the 4030,4230,4240) for being fuel pigs for the power and guys *claimed* that a turbo didn't make fuel consumption any worse.

I meant that they did not put the big muffler on till the 4430 not the 4230. I think they are the same except for the exit end. It has been 20 years since i have looked closely at one though. Hell i can't even remember if the 4230 has a turbo or not.
