The Moog Modular was an absolute monster of a synthesizer, and Arturia's emulation of it is a joy to behold. It's a great introduction to Modular synthesis - the idea of building a synth from blocks of components - since it's so easy to make amazing sounds!
In this episode I introduce the most fundamental feature of the Modular-V - its Oscillators (the things that make sound).
About me:
My name is Anthony Chisnall. I'm a musician and a songwriter. I've created this channel - One Man and His Songs - in order to share with you everything I learn as I strive to improve my songwriting skills. Watch my songs evolve each week - the rhythms, the melodies, the lyrics, the production... everything I need to learn in order to produce professional-sounding music of which I can be proud!
I play the electric and acoustic guitar, and the bass guitar, and record all of my own synth-based sounds myself too, but I can't sing very well (huge understatement!), and so my wife, Pauline, who has a lovely singing voice, has come to my rescue. You'll hear her on all of my songs.
All of my music is written in Steinberg's Cubase.
I want to build a community of music-lovers with whom I can share my experiences, and from whom I can gain valuable feedback as I pursue my dream of learning to write great songs. I really hope you'll join me on my journey!
For more information about me, and to download a free copy of my own self-written music assistant software called Guitar Tutor, please head over to my website - www.onemanandhissongs.com.

Fantastic! I've come here fresh from a couple of weeks with your Synthi-V tutorial, and I foolishly thought I with the knowledge I'd gained from that, I could make this thing do something. No such luck, but here you are again to save the day. Thanks so much. Clear and perfectly paced. This is probably a question for a forum, but do you think there is a "path" through the Arturia synths? I'm wondering if my plan to start with the older ones is a little flawed...
@OneManAndHisSongs
@OneManAndHisSongs 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! As for a path, I try really hard to let each synth stand on their own, but there's certainly a difficulty hierarchy. I think the Modular V and ARP 2600 are the most challenging of the ones I've recorded to date, and the Jupiter and Prophet are a little more accessible, but I think you can pick and choose according to your fancy. I hadn't really considered it before now, but it might actually be possible that modern -> early is a good general heuristic!

Very nice introduction. An even simpler configuration than the one you show in your first patch is to take the output of the oscillator and patch it straight into the VCA input, however this gives no control over the level of the output.

Hello Anthony! Thank you for the tutorials! I completed the entire series, and actually learned quite a bit about the VST. In looking at how this synth is designed, one could say at a minimum, you really have two synthesizers. A bit of creative patching, and you could probably have more… I had a question though, and perhaps you could shed a little light on why the VST version synth was designed with “adjustable” jacks? I would think in the real System 55, this wouldn’t have been an option, and the ability to bias the signal either positively or negatively would have been done by other means. Is there a way to “naturally” bias a signal in the VST like the original System 55? Also, it seems like the VST offers a lot more modulation routings, more than the original System 55 did. I’m sure there would have been a way to patch a specific sequencer output to a module on the System 55, but the VST makes it way more easier to do so. Any thoughts on the differences between the System 55, and the VST?

Thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you enjoyed the series! As a general observation upon Arturia's approach to the delicate question of faithfulness to the original, I think that for the most part they do a very good job of allowing you to use the device exactly as it would have been, but also with optional modern twists that strictly improve upon the original IF you choose to go down that route. In answer to your specific question, I have no idea how the controls would have bee calibrated on the physical device, but the modulation rings are, I think, a very elegant enhancement.

Now that I finished ARP2600 Walkthrough, I intended to start with the Mini MOOG. Now, seeing this Modular Synth, makes me wonder if I should learn it too, prior Mini MOOG. Is this Modular better than ARP2600? Is it worth it to learn it after have learnt the ARP2600?
@OneManAndHisSongs
@OneManAndHisSongs 2 жыл бұрын
Oh yes, absolutely. If you managed the ARP, you'll be fine with the Modular. They're completely different beasts. I view the ARP as a wild, untameable monster, whereas the Moog is much warmer and more instantly musical. Both fabulous, but in very different ways.

How are you able to shift the noise of the note with the fm and pwm jacks without toggling or shifting anything at 14:00? I'm trying but my sound stays the same... Is it because I'm not using a midi controller or synth? I'm on ableton using laptop keyboard
@OneManAndHisSongs
@OneManAndHisSongs 2 жыл бұрын
If you don't have a midi controller, what are you using as your virtual modulation wheel? You can't see it on screen, but each time you see my body move I'm moving the mod wheel on my keyboard up & down.
