John's swagger for everything is so natural and just brings a tear to my eye with his demeanor and knowledge. A true professional with such beautiful results! I am in awe! The way he coaches people to get "the sound" is more impressive than anything. This method is 95% working with people and 5% recording.

I visit MS in 2015 when the renovation was just beginning. So great to see this room get back into record mode again. Love the one mic method.

Love this series, especially the behind the scenes stuff. I've been trying to record bands with a minimalist setup for many years. I'm learning a lot.

Seems to me the world is ready for the onemic. In this over produced project-studio climate, it is refreshing to see music come together where the bands are actually nervous, and listening on a different level. More rehearsal! Less editing!

One trend I have noticed is we have gotten used to using our eyes looking at waveforms, and our ears have become second fiddle!

Are you able to explain in a bit more detail the measurements you are working out and why? I see you measure the two guitar amps out to 7 feet, presumably for balance but do/did you measure the drums and keyboard amp out to 7 feet as well or were they just placed by ear after listening to the mic? The studio I work at just brought one of these mics and I have just discovered your series so I am really keen to learn how to get the best out of the mic. Your series is truly amazing and I thank you for the effort it took to put this all together.

I have contemplated why I enjoy older music vs current recordings. For a long time I was hung up on the idea that it was the difference between the analog and digital worlds. The digital world has came so far and I believe its sound is not the problem. The problem it has caused is the actual change in the artistic processes such as super high track counts, no clear decision making in the arrangement/ production end, killing of budgets that allow the producers and bands to flesh out ideas before one track is made, the fix it in the mix and all the recall abilities have caused second guessing of a captured event in that moment. The biggest killer is the lack of a certain missing feel that is caused by recording to a grid. Either the musician has trained himself to play to the grid purposely or the engineer has taken it upon themselves to adjust that. Ugh!!! To me these one mic series recordings have proven to me that mic placement, the room, but most of all, the live performance of a good song with a good band, captured at the right moment. I’m no expert n never claimed to be but this series has answered big questions as to why I like 50’-60’s recorded music.

I live in Muscle Shoals...supposedly the town was named such because the shoals in the area (before TVA built dams, created lakes & ended the shoals) were very strong. At first it certainly seems like an error to astute folks, but if anything, those who would've been suggesting names for towns in that era were very educated, formally or informally. With 0 internet, TV, cinema, or much else of what we now consider entertainment, the average person was very well read, regardless of schooling.

Why would you put the monitor control on the top of the desk like that? Weird. Rad to see inside these sessions.

Is the singer just singing without amplification? Over all that noise? Won't the singer have to stretch their voice. It's the only thing I'm struggling with. I want to record singer and electric guitar only can anyone help?? Cheers from Australia. Love these vids!

The band isn't playing very loud and she is a strong singer. I offered her headphones but she didn't what them. Other singers do, it's up to them.

Won’t it be funny when everything is recorded with one mic and AI separates out each instrument as if it was it’s own track? Full circle.
