David Wood, the founder of Acts 17 Apologetics, tells more of his story and explores the question of hope for psychopaths in today's culture and Christian Faith.
Become a financial team member of the One Minute Apologist and get exclusive access to content on the website. If you have questions about anything in this episode, Bobby will answer them for our team members on a once a month webinar. Join the team by visiting www.oneminuteapologist.com
Do you ever doubt your ability to answer bigger than life questions like, “Why do I exist? What is the purpose of life? Can I know God? If so, how? Are miracles possible?” And if God exists what’s with all the evil in the world? Do questions like these ever nag at you? If so, you’ve come to the right channel. I too am a fellow wonderer who thinks about stuff like this.
I (Bobby Conway) am the founder and host of the rapidly-growing ministry, The One Minute Apologist, which is found on KZbin and at www.oneminuteapologist.com. Here I provide quick, credible answers to apologetic questions that resource people with a hunger to defend their Christian faith. These videos will often include interviews. I’ve had the privilege of interviewing some of the world's leading Christian apologists. Among them are: William Lane Craig, Josh McDowell, Hank Hanegraaff, JP Moreland, Norman Geisler, Frank Turek, and many more.

One of the great things about moral realism is that it do not matter what you feel, right is right and wrong is wrong. Even if we cannot feel it we can recognise it.

But can we recognize it from within, if not through our feelings?
@NilsFredrikGjerull
@NilsFredrikGjerull 3 жыл бұрын
@@leahhicks8657 We can use God revelations in scripture in combination with reason. The point about realism is that it is not found within you, that would be subjective, it is outside your. We have a God given conscience, that can be found within, but it is not a feeling, it is knowledge. The word 'conscience' mean with knowledge. Our conscience is easily corrupted, so it is not enough. That is why we need a standard outside humanity.

Nils Fredrik Gjerull okay, another question, you say it’s scripture combined with reason. Looking at reason alone: Is this reason based on “I know this will hurt someone else so I will not do it”? or... “I know this will cause unnecessary drama and is a waste of my time so to avoid it I’ll just not do it”. Like reason for the sake of what is logical or reason for the sake of what is in the best interest of others? Does that make sense?

No if you haven’t been taught, example, all of your scholar life but without the math assignment, and then you see a symbol where everybody recognizes it as a number and they know how to use it, even though you could start learning but at a slower rate, depending of the age you encounter it and start looking for a math teacher, oh, and you have dyslexia, same with psychos, and antisocial in general, no good morals have been taught, so, to start learning like a child, but with adult responsibilities… and more mental health problems. And highly probable that you had a psycho parent who felt disappointed of you by being born with the traits so you get emotionally abandoned. Go see how most of criminal families are… and if one sees the pattern and wants to change, oh boy, still gets the burden and hate, but from both neurotypical and disfunctional for making their problems “public”. What a life, huh?

David Wood hits the nail on the head when he said psychopaths feel superior, when in fact they’re feelings of superiority are rooted in a defect. Getting the psychopath to recognize that fact is the first step to salvation, but it’s the hardest step to make.

Maybe there are examples that could be found of why feeling is a good thing. For example, having pets lowers blood pressure. Empathy itself is good. For example, it lets you know how others will feel about actions you might consider taking.

As a self diagnosed sociopath, I've always realized I'm probably the most broken person I know. I don't feel and I've no care to feel. Good thing I was born and raised in a Christian family. Being a Christian has saved more people than I'd like to admit, because the bible says not to do such evils.

But with all do respect : should it not be “Common Sense” to know not to hurt/destroy life. Do we really need a holy book to HAVE to tell us this, Just as there are other areas in the bible that sort of indicate violence. The human race should not need writings from holy books to Tell Us how we should be living and then to have to follow only those writings. To me that is what has occurred with the Muslim people and their religious teachings.

@paisleyyama : well then, we deserve what we get ! And I still stand by the rule of common sense. Yes there are times when killing is required as in self defense or trying to protect someone, but not for need of greed. Let's not forget about mental disorder and how it affects life.
@WhereWhatHuh
@WhereWhatHuh 4 жыл бұрын
@@packratswhatif.3990 Look at the words you use: "Common sense to know not to hurt" "Deserve what we get" "greed" -- you see that you are making moral judgements. There is a famous philosophical question called the Euthyphyro Dilemma. To summarize: Do those moral judgments come from within you -- in which case it's just your mind saying that you don't like it when people do certain things -- or is it a rule outside of you, above you, which you and all humans must obey? Because if it's within you, then it's not "common sense" but rather it's your personal opinion. If it's NOT just within you, then where does that come from? To give you an example: I can say that it's a law not to put your feet on the coffee table. Now, if that law comes from me, then it only applies in my house. If I think it applies to you, at your house, then I have to claim that it's a city ordinance, or a state law, or a federal law. I can't say that there's a federal law without saying that there's a federal government. In the same way, I can't say that there's an objective "common sense" that we all just ought to know unless I say that there's a source of moral law, a lawgiver, a God. If I deny that, then I'm doing what Socrates said in Apologia, when he said that you can't believe in horsemanship without believing in horses.

WhereWhatHuh : Yes a very (deep) discussion for sure. I can only go by the way I feel so my comment is only relative to me. I suppose its does come down to how a person is programmed and no decision is absolute. I must admit that this topic goes beyond my ability to argue and is for philosophers to decide the answers. People are not good at being logical emotional machines.
@WhereWhatHuh
@WhereWhatHuh 4 жыл бұрын
@@packratswhatif.3990 Again, Ross, look at your words: "programmed." Don't throw this one to the ivory tower elites: You either have a right to have an opinion on this, or else they are "programmed" just like you and "no decision" they make "is valid" either. If morality is "programming" then all human reason is programming, and "philosophers" are programmed just like you are. But if you (and they) are rational, then your reasoning is valid -- but for it to be valid, there must be a basis other than genetic programming. Which means that morality comes from without. Don't run away and hide, my Friend: Just think it through. If you are a rational person -- that is, not programmed -- then your opinion is valid, and you just have to figure out if morality is true or false.

Why is it ok to say I need glasses, or say my leg is busted or I have cancer and no one bats an eye. But when a mental illness is announced people start behaving as if the person that is suffering is at fault, every one suffers from something either from birth or a traumatic event, we seriously need to have more love for each other and stop stigmatizing the suffering. We kick a person when they are down with out even realizing it.
@kathysmall6303
@kathysmall6303 2 жыл бұрын
Because mental illness implies that there is something wrong with how we think/feel/behave - something the average person can control. So it's tough to understand something we don't experience. We understand that the diabetic can't possibly produce insulin, but we can't understand why the person with ADHD/ptsd etc can't "get right". I'm guilty of this too, getting frustrated with or offended by folks who struggle with mental illness.
@eyennordic348

But being psychopath usually means one does not care about making others suffer , including the mental illness issue. Even Wood does not actually care about people, he just avoids complicated types if behaviour and make effort to find ways to common good.

Lacking empathy or guilt is not morally wrong, and I don't think God will condemn people for not feeling those things especially if it's a mental/"physical" illness. But that's wrong is when psychopaths choose a path of sin. Take David for example, he is a psychopath, but he still can choose to do what is good, right, and pleasing to God. In the end, this is all a sin problem. And yes, there is hope even for a psychopath.

@IasonIsrael
@IasonIsrael 4 жыл бұрын
Sin is more than what you choose; it is the very affections of the heart. To be "without natural affection," (Romans 1) is a judgment for corrupt nature. To be incapable of guilt is also an aggravation of sin, "You have a whore's forehead...They were not at all ashamed; they do not know how to blush," (Jeremiah 6:15) It is obviously worse to act on a corrupt disposition, but one ought not to rest until the heart is right. This is a matter of life and death. "If I give away all I have and give my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing." 1 Cor 13:5 It is not sufficient to merely act compassionate; one must be compassionate. It is not enough to refrain from acts of revenge, one must "forgive his brother *from his heart.*" Christianity is a supernatural religion, the grace worked by God in the soul, not whatever mere human effort can produce in response to knowledge (though if man is responsible for what he cannot do, he is certainly responsible for what he can do). If Christ gathers where He did not sow renewing grace, He will certainly gather where He has sown common grace.
@Pyroverbs205
@Pyroverbs205 4 жыл бұрын
@Iason While you do have good points, you do misunderstand some things. There's a difference between lacking guilt and empathy and people who don't have "natural affections" (and all the stuff you said). In Jer 6, it's clear that what he's saying is that these people are unrepentant. They did evil and did not care that they did. But the fact of the matter is that they were rebuke for doing evil, not because they merely didn't have empathy or guilt. And about the 1 Cor 13, it does not say anywhere where you *must* have "affections" (as you describe it). Verses 4-8 clearly defines what love is. In context it means "even if I give all I have away but I'm not kind nor patient to people, I'm self-seeking and I rejoice in iniquity, etc etc.. I gain nothing." Yea, it's good to have emotions. But emotions are an outflow, a result, or the catalyst even of what's already in our heart, not the cause or "active" agent. And like I said, you can lack empathy and guilt but can still to choose to do what is good, right, and pleasing to God.

It's important to note that ASPD is not a mental illness it's a disorder characterized by maladaptive behaviors. It cannot be treated or alleviated with any medications like mental illness can. It's incredibly rare for someone with ASPD to seek counseling long enough to get a diagnosis - they typically think there's nothing wrong with them - as he mentions. I'm wondering how this man got a diagnosis. Another fact is that psychopaths are born (through a complicated of biological processes even in utero). Sociopaths are typically made, usually by growing up in adverse environments such as learning to steal because they grew up in a rough neighborhood where crime was common and learned.

@atheodora lastname you never came to understand that God tells us that *no one* is good. We all fall short. The key is to understand how good God is, and how we are not good in comparison. Your definition of what is good is not the same as God's standard. God's standard is much higher, and therefore all of us fall short. The good news is that despite this, Jesus took on the burden for all our sin, for the sins of the world, upon himself. Therefore justice for sin has been paid for already, and whoever puts their faith in christ is no longer under judgement, but has been forgiven, and freely given the righteousness of God and eternal life. That is the amazing beauty of God's love for us. When you understand how good he is and how we are not, and yet he loves us more than we can imagine, despite this. If you believe you are good, you can't see the truth of beauty of Christ's sacrafice for you. He loves you so much. The point is you must first come to truly understand the situation you are in. The Bible clearly states that we have sinned and it's part of our nature. That we are accountable for the sin which we commit, and that justice for all evil must take place. God's word, and his spirit, then leads us to Christ for salvation and eternal life. He gives this to us as a free gift because he has already paid for and dealt with your sin. That is the love of God. He loves you and wants to save you and give you life, so he gave himself up for you. Romans 3:23-24 (NIV) 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

@atheodora lastname hmm God's justice is like the sun shining upon everyone and His love is like the rain falling down on everyone - murderers and saints alike, both young and old, etc. Some say, too much sunlight and too less rain is a curse, for some, the other way around. My point is, it's pointless to debate about anonymity, and if He is anonymous at all, why are we even debating at all?

A lot of people were upset because the Conspiracy Palette sold out but there were thousands of those palettes being sold at jacked up prices by resellers like eBay. The same thing happened when Jeffree Star came out with his brushes that he sold through Morphe and then through Ulta. They sold out the first day at both retailers but there were thousands of pages of resellers selling them on eBay alone. This continues to happen with his big launches. They could limit the sales to two or three items per customer but they don’t. Of course resellers could still get around this but it would not be as easy for them. It is frustrating for the customer that just wants to buy their product.

David is right, for instance..in the very old psychology books cluster A and B personalities were described as 'morally inferior', because of their lack of / difficulty with empathy, that really makes you think. I once heard a priest describe evil as something or someone being in "the absence of God/ being far removed from God" rather than being possessed with evil. So I asked for some advice to go with it. But don't worry, I was being facetious, I'm not looking for your advice. Moving on... Yes, we are impressed. It's a very small thing though and right now it's being blown out of proportion. Perhaps that's your doing... Why is it impressive? i guess it boils down to power. the guy talking about David going a couple of rounds with Brock Lesnar should clue you in. Maybe you need to look him up, cause even if David is impressively big, Mr Lesnar is a modern day hulk!! God seems to agree with me. Check out what says in Job concerning the Behemoth... “I will not keep silence concerning his limbs, or his mighty strength, or his goodly frame" Many things are impressive, not just size. There's skill, mastery, knowledge, wisdom, ability etc etc; these fall under the category 'khokma', which is a biblical term. The Bible project has a video breaking it down, called Proverbs. That's one of the books of the Old Testament. It's part of the wisdom literature. Good stuff. What do you find impressive? In case it's lost on you, I'm flicking you on the nose right now. I have have doubts about this, seeing this through the female Christian eyes. I have seen mean little boys growing up in the neighborhood, in a few of them (not all--no male hater. ) Had serious issues with their Mothers’. Usually their mothers were undercover streetwalkers and call-girls. The boys that I knew who were bad or showed “ psychopath” tendencies in young childhood DID NOT have the best MOTHERS, and I am not exaggerating. A lot of men have “mommy issues” that they do not want to confront because traditionally a man (Son) is not supposed to turn his back on his mother. Also, it really depends on how that Mother modeled her behavior around her children especially her sons. The RELIGION in the HOME ( IF one+ is there.) I truly believe psychopathy/sociopath come from extreme POVERTY and bad ENVIRONMENTS. NO everyone who comes from the “bottom” with a terrible mother is nutty in the head. I remember one boy who was 5 years old who became an arsonist because his mother ignored him and she was a streetwalker. In summary, I believe when a person who demonstrates anti-social behavior is due from environmental/other influences factors while they were extremely young.

The doctors like to throw pills at problems which are emotional but also physical. My one son had autism, but he got over it, it was his gut was not making serotonin. We were able to help him though probiotics and a better diet. There are many kids whose immune system is wiped out from antibiotics and poor diet. We are learning so much of what special diets can do from those who can feel better from not eating wheat to those who get off dairy and get rid of arthritis and many other disorders. Some foods can help us sleep as people who have mental issues often don't sleep well and then by learning which plants can be eaten, can finally sleep the night through. There are many new things to try. Nutrition is not thought to be that important but something is wrong with loads of us as people are all quite fat these days and they didn't use to be. People don't get up wanting to be obese any more than they'd love to be in a wheelchair. When everyone is having a problem, its the food. When so many boys end up with autism, food has something to do with it. Funny thing is that God originally told us to eat plants, and when we do, we are a whole lot less sick.

Then why would an organic condition, which only manifests by neurological irregularities, be more prevalent among generations that are less God fearing than others? I see a lot of people saying that psychopathy is caused by a traumatic childhood and I find this so insulting. As someone who grew up with a psychopathic brother who did tremendous damage to my life and to the life of others this is completely untrue. By its very definition, psychopathy is the inability to feel emotions which means they are unable to register trauma as trauma is driven by the emotion of fear. Psychopaths are not made, their born. We might have had a traumatic childhood but i assure you this didn't even register into my brother. I witnessed it firsthand. With that being said I do believe psychopaths can be saved. My brother became a pastor and he is neither a repentant sinner nor a Christian but I do believe it can happen. Emotion and logic are part of a human construct but the Holy Spirit is a whole separate entity that I believe can reach psychopaths. Its just not as common as Christians seem to assume and I think the church is also responsible for protecting them instead of victims as this interviewer is trying to do. He did nothing on himself. Watch his testimony. God redeemed him. Its as simple as that. He saw the truth in God after a Christian challenged his nihilistic atheist worldview, preaching to him the gospel. He then believed in God, and here he is. Transformed. You state its his own doing, but do not recongise that it is what he believes in, that transformed him to be able to function in this world. It is Jesus who transformed him. Not himself. Because it is jesus whom he is trusting! Credit where credit is due. All he did was be honest with himself when faced with the truth, and believed in Jesus. Something that all of us need to do. Honesty requires no feelings. It is a giving up of your pride, which we all have, psychopath or not, and receiving the love of God. We are all sinners. All fall short, not just full psychopaths. Some people never had a chance. We say people all have the same chance, but that's not true. Some people are born with mental illness that causes an inability to feel any empathy whatsoever for anyone, or commit sin uncontrollably due to severe brain damage and trauma. God would never hold anything like that against a person, as he is a loving God.

Psychopathy does not constitute patologically as a disease - it makes no sense to speak of it as anything else but a social construction.

@Colorful Animations I think it is purely socially founded - like most of psychiatry's allegedly biologically founded diagnoses

@Colorful Animations Dr. Jordan Peterson is very explicit about this: [quote] “Anyways, the two years old are a collection of these random motivations, more or less gets his or her act together about three, if they are socialized properly and that means that the parents are doing their best to make their child acceptable to other children. That is your damn job as a parent [parenting]. You have to understand that. Because if your child isn't acceptable to other children, they won’t play with your child. And your child will be lonesome and isolated and akward. And they will NEVER recover. Because if your kid doesn’t get that right between 2 and 4 - it’s over ! They are never gonna learn it. The other kids accelerate forward, that kid is left behind. And it’s not a good life for that kid. They don’t learn how to play with others and then they’re are done. And there is a huge literature on trying to rectify anti-social children. Say from the age of 4 on. It’s like “No, you can’t”. And you can go ahead and read three or four hundreds papers on rectifying of anti-social behavior, and figure it out for yourself. But I did that for about 5 years. And it was while ago, but I know the literature hasn’t changed.” kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZquUq3agnJuXaqc"

Let’s all just demonize whoever is off I know the law I know how charges rack up in a millisecond our society can’t forgive you for being depressed or lonely if that’s the case then why bother that’s what society says I was socially awkward and in my own planet though never harmed anyone or anything that was then but it was torture I only came around when I realized my career made this irrelevant but getting to that point is an eon from 22 it’s as if people who struggle with a mental illness are what he said defective I had to pick myself up but the world was absolutely no help good luck to those who identify and to those who got no worries have girlfriends and perfect life you might want to educate yourselves about emotional IQ because most who fit that profile are completely ignorant about what’s different and discard them automatically that’s how many turn to drugs and alcohol to express their denial and ashamed of existing sadly it’s as if you can only find people to identify with by developing a substance addiction

my brothers. why the punishment of every small sin is death?? how god can b so cruel? why the babies are sinners like bible says. 2nd thing why god does not forgive us cos he can do this easily. why he has to punish his son? is this justice with son who was begging to father to save him from crucifiction. would you like punish your son for ur or ur family's sins??? human understand human's way or language so plz tell me there is any logic in this punishment?? our god is soo sooo merciful. he can forgive us without punishing others or us. he has to athority to forgive us. bible also says if u repent god will forgive u. this is simple for him. bible says god is one. and he does not change. he is immortal. but chritians say that he born n became baby then boy and then died. that means he changed when he became 3in 1. when he became baby he also changed? when he died he became mortal??? soo plz brother do not confuse yourself read the bible carefully and ask god to guide you to truth.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death. Jesus did not sin, so death had no legal right over him, death could not hold him.

Sin is more than what you choose; it is the very affections of the heart. Moral issues include things you feel whether or not you asked to feel them. If Christ gathers where He did not sow renewing grace, He will certainly gather where He has sown common grace.

flesh(body) is also god?? many christians say jesus's body died but his soul was devine which did not die.. but here u r claiming that body is also god. so god in flesh died. he became mortal which is against his nature. like god can not cease to exist. same way god can not become human, stone , tree. because things are his creations. before there was no matter or space or time. he created all these things and spread them. so creater can not become creation, he does not need matter so show himself. he is free of all needs. my frnd, read islam, quran, do not confuse yourself by following trinity. look hindus all made there prophets god, like raam krishen etc. but christians call them pagans. if christian's god can become human then why hindus god can not? god is same one. if u believe trinity then logically u have to believe all human gods in the world. you can not deny them. hinduism, christianity judaism and islam , in all major religion's books one common message was given that is ' god is one , he is all powerful, none is like him, nobody can see him . so we should believe this common message and stay away from making partners with god.............

Please look into Lithium Orotate. Works so well for mental issues and depression. "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;" Romans 3:23 "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8 "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23 "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." Ephesians 2:8-9 “Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.” Romans 3:19-20 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16 "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." Romans 10:9-10

3. what was the prayer of jesus before crucifiction? oh god take this cup away from me. let it be ur will but not my will. and surprisingly god rejects his prayer as bible says. but the quran says his prayer was listened by god and he was ascended to heaven without crusifiction. 4. ezakiel 18:20 , father is not acountible for the sins of his son and son is not accountible for the sins of father.wicked of wickeds will be forgiven if he repents. so very simple for god to forgive. islam teaches the same thing.
