Had a statistics prof years ago who, in doing surveys, liked to see a few negative responses as they lent credibility to all the positive ones. So a few negative responses can be a good thing as long as there are not very many.

Dude, I was up till 4 in the morning yesterday binge watching all of your videos! Just discovered your channel. I follow a lot of makers/woodworkers on KZbin but you're one of the more interesting ones. I really like how you make so many great things with the most basic tools in your garage. I don't have any place to set up any tools yet but I'll be buying a house soon and as soon as I do I'll be building that workbench of yours! It's just awesome, like all of the other stuff you make! I think what's really good about you is that you make the stuff for "the common man" without a large warehouse workshop. Most of us have a garage or something even smaller so all of the stuff you make is really meant for us. Keep up the awesome work! I really look forward to seeing more of your projects!

I always like it when people make a mistake or change a design on the fly like you have and you filmed the whole thing. I'm a welder not a wood worker so things like what you have done helps out a guy like me . I've gone big on my router table, which is a mistake as I've tried to over complacated things, your vid has helped me out in a big way. I will mash together what I have already with your design I think........ thanks heaps for your content upload......

Thank you! I'm glad you found the video helpful. I would say with the current method, it takes about 1 minute to mount the router, and about 30 seconds to unmount it. It's not instant, but it works for me (I also only have one router). I hope this helps!

Hint: If u pre-heat Metal before hotglueing it does not only givve u more time to put your workpiece into place, it also makes the joint much stronger Alternative Hint: If u cant preheat, apply the hotglue to the wood. It will cool down slower and give u additional time.

7:12 Router is a tool that contacts with the material (wood) in a point (unlike circ. saw where we have a line), so the fence position does not matter at all. All you have to do is to set the distance between the router bit and the fence. You can try to "missalign" the fence, give a try and take measurements after ;)
@OneMinuteWorkbench
@OneMinuteWorkbench 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! I actually thought about that when I built it, but I couldn't think of a better way to pull a measurement than having a line perfectly centered with the center of the bit. So when the bit is installed, in order to measure from the center of the bit, the bit itself would have to have a pin-point marking on it....none of my router bits have that sort of marking. It can still be done, you just have to measure to the outside of the bit, and then just subtract one-half of the size of the bit from your measurement in order to get the center dimension for your cut. As long as you're okay with doing some simple arithmetic, that method is fine. However, there is another problem with that; when measuring from the outside of the bit to the router's fence, there is a cutout (for dust collection) on the fence right where you would want to put the end of your ruler or measuring tape. It could still be done, but you'd need to raise the router bit up high enough that it is higher than the cutout on the fence, subtract 1/2 of the bit size from your center-dimension, measure to the outside of the bit, then lower your bit back down to the right height for the cut, then make the cut. So with all that, it seemed easier to just install rulers. Pretty much the only downsides to the rulers are that they take a bit of effort to install in the first place, and you have to have two of them. Let me know if this makes sense!

Nice! Having a small shop, this seems to be the best option for me to make. Love how quick and easy u can take router out and use in hand when needed. Thanks for sharing. Edit: thanks for sharing the fact that you used cheap HF rulers. A lot of brand snobs in woodworking, but personally as a weekend warrior, and pay check to pay check guy, I have to cut costs down whenever possible or find a work around for certain tasks. Anyway, thanks. Much appreciated

Don't let the brand snobs bother you. I spent my whole 40 + years as a carpenter. Yes I drove nails for over 40 years. I do have a lot of name brand tools. But it hasn't always been that way. I started on a shoestring budget and worked my way up. Getting better and better at my trade and better and better with the tools I had. Don't let them tell you that you have to have a certain kind of tool to do something. There's always a work around that will give the same results with a 25 dollar tool instead of a 100 dollar tool. I'm living proof of that. I would not buy a tool unless It would pay for it's self with in the first couple of jobs. I don't like to brag, but I have had customers wait for a year for me to get to their jobs. I would tell them up front how long the waiting list was. We don't care, we will wait for you, we don't want anybody else. So Learn your tools and what you can do with them. And be safe with them, They can hurt you in the blink of your eye.

Nice work. I’ve been looking for making my own table for a while now but nearly every one else has a fixed router. Yours is the best design I’ve seen so far. Only comment is I would make a slot for the router foot in exact size on the underside - this way you do not need to make the alignment every time you mount it as it would be fixed.
@AGregPalmer
@AGregPalmer 5 жыл бұрын
Tommy, if you glue a ring of small blocks with a champher on them around the router then it will self align when you take it off and reinsert it. Otherwise you may want a storage spot for the alignment block under the table..

This video is the only place I've seen using a hole slightly smaller than the point-to-point distance of a hex head to capture a bolt in dense plywood. I've been telling people for years to capture nuts for knobs this way. Properly sized, the only way to get the nut out is to destroy the plywood. No adhesive necessary and the nut in the hole is self-squaring the first time it is drawn tight.

I thoroughly enjoy the simplicity of your router table. I need a table to cut finger joints without going out into the cold and using one of the big tables in the shop. I was looking at various table tops and costs would be anywhere from $200 to $300 to have the basic items and features that I would need. I intend to skip any type of router insert plate and mount directly to a piece of half inch birch ply with a second piece of half inch birch plywood laminated to the bottom of the first but cut out big enough for the router to pass through. I need to place a 3/8" miter slot for my Incra IBox along one side so the two half inch layers will keep the strength needed for the top. Thanks for your video.

Hi Tommy, That project for me is absolute genius. I built a new work shop last year that I thought would be big enough for my needs. That was a silly assumption, already having to prioritise space. The one thing I need is a router table but can't justify the floor space. This project fits my needs perfectly as it can be broken down when not in use to save space so it is now on my must do list. Great idea!!! I have a vice type bench that I mount all my tools on. Fortunately I am getting far too many tools for this to be a viable option any longer so I am working to build a work table. Now I like your vice mounted router table, but why use the vice? Drill some 1/2" holes through the table top and using T nuts on the underside to mount tools. This would enable you to use the bench vice without removing the router table. Since the holes in the table would all be uniform, and uniformly spaced you could be able to put each tool where you find you need it most. That's my plan. And I am very good at making plans. Getting it into wood is another matter entirely. :) So if you are in the habit of communicating with the carpenter in the clouds, mention my name. I need it. :)
@OneMinuteWorkbench

Lol - this was a fun comment to read! I thought about building it right into the bench, buy I'm not certain that's where I want to go just yet...lots of variables at play. Also, I wanted to make an option that was available to more people than those with certain types of workbench tops. It is a good idea though, and I might do it some day. Thanks for taking the time to give some feedback and let me know what you thought. I hope you get the time to transform some of your plans into reality!

Great Vid TY, I'm sure you realised that if you heated the steel rules before glueing them it would have gave you more time to set them in place.Keep up the good work

Thank you! Actually, the bottom of the rulers have a layer of cork, so thermal transfer might not be as good if they were only metal. That said, I still think you're correct; even heating up the cork would have been better than nothing at all. Thanks for sharing the idea!

Heating the RULER & keeping it hot before pressing it in would have helped, but I'd use epoxy, but don't find benefit from rulers; I just measure from fence as needed. Awesome DUST collection; mine lack this & I might rebuild to improve this essential feature. These are really useful; I gather/buy up any cheap router I can and make (simpler) mini router tables for my favorite bits and hang them from the ceiling. :-)
@OneMinuteWorkbench
@OneMinuteWorkbench 5 жыл бұрын
I thought about heating the ruler, but there was cork on the bottom (should have showed that in the video), so I figured the heat probably wouldn't hold anyway. The real problem though was the cheap glue gun wasn't putting the glue out fast enough and adding new sticks was problematic, which also slowed things down. I do like having the rulers in the table. My table saw has one, and it's actually pretty darn accurate, so I figured I might as well see if I could have rulers in the router table with similar accuracy - it came out great. I do like the idea of having lots of routers hanging around (pun intended), but they always seem pretty expensive. Either way, thanks for the feedback. I'm glad you found the dust collection feature helpful! Thanks again for sharing!

Great table Tommy! It's now on my To Do List. :) If you get a chance I have a couple questions.... 1) what's your method to ensure accurate height measurements for your router bits? Trial and error works but I find it time consuming and suspect you have a good suggestion. 2) If possible can you please include a link to your favorite marking tool? The one you used in this video looks decent. I'm currently looking to purchase a good marking too. Thanks!

Awesome! I'm so glad that my channel has been helpful to you. When I made this channel, my guess was that most people were working with similar tool setups and space constraints as me, and that's sort of the point of most of the projects I do. So when I hear that you're working with the same stuff, it lets me know that it's working out - and that makes me smile 🙂 Thanks!

This is awesome! I wonder if a couple of triangle brackets made of plywood underneath that rest on the outside front face of the vise would be useful to help avoid any warping over time with the weight of the router pulling down on the table?
@OneMinuteWorkbench
@OneMinuteWorkbench 5 жыл бұрын
It probably would - that's a great idea. You could also probably just use runners that were say 1-2" wide, rather than triangles. That way the base still stays compact and can still be stored in a drawer. Thanks for the feedback!

You may have been fast enough with the glue, but hot gluing metal is tough because it just wicks the heat away from the glue
@OneMinuteWorkbench
@OneMinuteWorkbench 5 жыл бұрын
I'd agree that metal would wick the heat away, however these rulers have cork on the bottom....so it turns out that I'm just not that great with operating a hot glue gun 🤣. I think the real problem was that it's a "mini" gun, so the sticks aren't very big and the gun went through the first stick so quickly that I had to fumble around and find another one to keep applying glue. By the time I found it and got it loaded up, it was enough time for the glue to cool down some. On the second side, I set out a couple of sticks for a quick change-out, but when I tried to load a stick, it got stuck in the gun (it's a cheap gun) and I had to reseat it to get it going. Again, it was just enough time for things to start to cool down. Your feedback is very good though - the concept you presented is very valid. I went back and looked at the video and realized that I never showed the cork on the bottom. So your comment will be helpful for people watching this video who think about adding hot glue to a metal surface. Thanks for sharing!
