Genuinely curious how long the phone would last underwater with the popup camera out. Not too bothered about IP rating (that's why I have a OnePlus 6). Probably not a realistic scenario, but it is something to consider as/when/if phones go this route for selfie cameras in the future - can they waterproof the mechanism?

“30 minute without depth of ip67 or ip68” Water Pressure depends on depth...

That's one some people have been trying to explain but it's going through deaf ears. IP68 is certifying that the device will survive for 30 minutes at a depth of 1.5 meters (about 4 feet and 11 inches). A more suitable test would to throw it in a bucket at least 1 meter and see how long it lasts. That being said, for most people, if you're careful with your phone, the water resistant test done here is probably good enough. However, supposedly they chose not to certify to save costs. Clearly the costs aren't going to the consumers as the price for the regular OnePlus 7 (not Pro, as shown here), is going up again compared to 6T and the previous generations. I still want the phone though, lol. I guess I'm kind of contributing to the problem :D

@@senorzed6483 Take your phone hiking. Saw a great potential shot next to a lake, pond, river, and then accidentally drop your phone into it while you're taking it out. That's a real life situation. There are definitely benefits. The primary argument against the IP ratings is the cost. I see that as an argument very often ever since OnePlus 7 was announced. If it truly helps with reducing costs, why is the price of the phone continues to increase? I still remember a couple years ago when OnePlus phones were around 299 USD. The regular OnePlus 7 is roughly $626 with 6GB of RAM and 128 gigs. The 6T, with similar specs started around 550 USD when released.

The water test was great! Much appreciated for taking the time to test this. What I actually appreciated more was that you actually made a phone call on the device. lol. That's the first I've seen of anyone actually utilizing the basic features of the phone. Everyone is talking up the specs and the camera (and we definitely need to know that), but I want to know about phone call quality, cell reception, how good is the wifi reception compared to other phones, etc.

Depth matters a lot. That total 36 mins at this depth could be equivalent to 2-3 mins at 1-1.5 meters as pressure plays a huge role in breaching the seals of any enclosed system.

Why? 5T already survived lots of immerse tests, frankly 100% of what's possible in real life conditionts, so did 6T. Why would 7 not pass even more? IP rating is just a fancy thing the manufacturer has to pay for a lot and that'd increase the phone price.

I'm an ME and my company does a lot of IP67 testing. The test is 30 min. At a meter depth. So you can do this at your home just get a meter barrel and run the test again.

The camera has a ruber ring around it so in theory it shouldn't let water get in the same way the sim card tray does. That's why he get;s wet lenses but no water damage. The ring is at the base of the camera unit itself. The teardown Zack from JerryRigEverything did on twitter live showed it.

Please try to turn on the front facing camera when it's in water, which I thought is a less common but "might happen" scenario that water drops hit your screen and accidentally turn the front camera on while the phone hits water surface, so that the camera will pop up in water. Nep Dastan well yes and no. The camera would work underwater but the touch screen would be activated all over. Touch screens work by having two points connected through the glass (capacitant touch) and these points are very small. When the points connect, the control board in the phone registers them and does the rest. So yes and no

Why? They are tested way beyond what you would use... I have the vivo Nex S.. it has basically the same mechanism, 8 months on it works fine.

what happen if the sea water got into the motorize part? salt might be able to block the motor from running after the phone is dried. BTW, I am more concern on the dust resistance than the water as motor can be damaged by the small particles.

Yeah I knew OnePlus would do that. It is nearly IP68 rated but without certification. I don't give a damn about IP rating as long as the device works properly because many of the companies that provide IP rating also do not claim any water damage under warranty

This guy actually tested at just 30 cms depth. Actual IP ratings can go upto 1.5 metre for 30 mins. It is the depth that matters than duration.

@@faihan988 if you buy S10+ or OnePlus 7 Pro, you will never ever submerge it into water willingly. Even if it drops from your hand or pocket, no matter how much is the depth, you will never wait for 30 mins to pull it out. Now if OnePlus can withstand 30cm for 30 mins, it will easily bear more depth for less time. So, it's a win win situation. I appreciate OnePlus for that. And if you want to talk about warranty, then just like OnePlus, no company will claim water damage under warranty even if their phone has an IP rating. So, safety matters, rating..... Not so much 🙂

@@tahatechyt You said OP can survive in more deep water just because it survived 30 cms for 30 mins. But the real challenge lies in handling in deep waters. Even Budget phones like moto g5s+ can survive 30 cms for 30 mins.You can search for moto G5s+ water test video in youtube for proof. Here the moto phone with no water resistance survives the water test in shallow depth of water. While flagships like iPhone 7, Galaxy S8 with IP certification gets completely bricked when it goes beyond the depth limit of 1.5 metres even for seconds. So depth matters, not duration. So If my phone falls into water I don't care about how long it is in the water. But how deep it is into the water. Because try dropping a non water resistant phone for 1.5 meters deep. It will brick out within 3 seconds. Too short time to take out your phone. While IP certified flagships can withstand 1.5 meters for 30 mins. There are some people who willingly bring their smartphones to the swimming pool just to take underwater selfies and photos. Galaxy S9 even made a commercial insisting that. I mean phones with IP rating can be confidently brought into a swimming pool. I have done that with my LG G6 without any hesitations, while you can't do the same for the OP7 pro. By the way, 'less depth more time' is very easy for smartphones than 'more depth less time' because at lower depth the pressure levels are the same for whatever duration you expose the phone. But when you go deeper, the pressure increases and the phone cannot tolerate it for even 10 seconds.

@@faihan988 yeah so who is asking you to throw your phone into the river or pool? The max you will drop your phone will be in the bathroom or kitchen. And these places mostly don't have more depth than a few inches. And as you said, any phone can survive a few inches. However, what I am trying to say is that during the Teardown of OnePlus 7 Pro, the adhesive applied on each and every port and openings is the same as any other IP68 rated phone. It just doesn't have the certification but it can withstand IP68 rated situations

I have the OnePlus 7 pro... But nothing beats the Huawei p20 pro IP rating. There was even a video on how amazing it was in a real IP test and even charges while being soaked. I won't try that with OnePlus 7 pro though.
