I think there's a much more reasonable approach to this argument rather than saying it should be one way or the other definitively. I think that there should be a toggle for this behavior so that people who prefer it one way or the other can choose for themselves which way it should work. Then by default it should be whatever most people would expect that it should work, which may likely be the Samsung way. Although you did mention that there isn't a right or wrong way to do this, I feel like giving people the option will make everyone happy.

I prefer the gestures acting on the most active window as its intuitive for me but i know that may not be the case for everybody.

While I have come to like the Z Fold's back gesture in multitasking, it really ought to be an option in the settings because it's not a one-solution-fits-everyone feature.

I prefer the Samsung way to be honest. Best solution for everyone would be a toggle option between the Samsung and the Pixel Fold style. They have to fix the bug you showed for sure (inconsistent behavior between the first back action and subsequent back actions) IMO, last selected app is the most consistent for all scenarios that's why I like it (floating, open canvas, 3 windows, closing the keyboard, etc.) and I'm very used to it from using Galaxy devices since the S2.

I'm on the Honor Magic V3 btw and I just noticed that it does it the Pixel Fold way for side by side but for floating windows it looks at the last selected one. Guess I'll need to get used to it 🤷🏻‍♂️

Yeah, I've always used Samsung, and it felt perfectly natural to me that the gesture is doing what the old button did, not interacting specifically with the app the gesture happens to be on top of. I think it's pretty rare that I'm actively using one pane, and need to go back on another, but not do anything else on it. Not worth the inconsistencies/complexities with three-pane layouts and floating windows to have it the Pixel way. Ideally, every phone would have an option to do it either way.

That back gesture change is actually pretty good. I usually do the back gesture with one hand on one side, it would get annoying if i had to switch sides just to go back if i was using two apps. That incosistent behavior though needs to be fixed.

Same here i use a strap one handed 95% of the time and i much prefer the back gesture this way. (I stick on a love handle on all my large phones) But again i can see the other side if you don't use it one handed.

The problem with the new gesture. is even if u use the phone with one hand only the first initial swipe is on the other app then reverts back which makes it inconsistent on canvas mode.

I felt the same way when I used my Pixel Fold for the first time... I loved that the back gesture worked on the app I made the gesture on. I always found the way Samsung did it, very clunky and non-intuitive. And that was before I used the Pixel. Amazing that I'm not the only one who found delight in this detail. Cheers to you Shane

Oh man , after 11 months with OnePlus open I used 2 screen at the same time maybe 3 or 4 times , it's really useless for me 😅 I love the big screen too much that I don't want to split at any time , I do that in my desktop only because I have a huge monitor not in a 7`screen. By the way I tested mine same version 820 and is working better okay, maybe you have some bug in your update . I got my update around 3 weeks ago , and you just got it yesterday 😲

If you use your foldable one handed, the app-dependent back gesture (rather than being fixed to a side) is better UX. The Side-dependent back gesture necessitates two handed use. Ideally, there'd just be an option to choose which style of back gesture you prefer.

I never knew my Pixel Fold behaved the way you're showing here Shane. One of the first apps I install when I get a new phone is a utility called Edge Gestures. I have it set that when I swipe in from either edge, it performs the BACK "gesture." This has made my Pixel Fold work in the Samsung way. I was so thrilled this app worked on the PF but had no idea it changed the behavior that you're discussing here. Just now, I turned the Edge Gestures app off, and sure enough, the back gesture is determined by which side of the screen I swipe in from rather than which app I last interacted with. Since the Edge Gestures app lets me set its interactive zone, if I just swipe in from the edge above or below the zone I've set, then I get the default Pixel Fold behavior that you prefer. Thanks for bringing this to my attention! I love having the choice!

From what you've shown, it looks like they are trying to move to a Samsung style gesture, but they've introduced a bug where the swipe is being bubbled down to the app you're doing the gesture on top of which puts it in focus but the gesture itself is performed on the app in focus at the start. So it is consistently only doing the back gesture on the focussed app, but the bug is causing the other app to steal focus instead of the initial app retaining focus.

I updated my Open yesterday and dynamic/material u color scheme was broken. I posted that on Reddit/OnePlus Community app and there are some hoops to go through to get it to working again whenever you change your wallpaper. Besides that, I've also noticed battery life which was great before the update, but now it is draining fast. Before the update I was getting anywhere from 6-7 SOT but now I'm barely getting 4 SOT and it's getting hotter than usual. Hoping that works itself out after a few days or so. As for the bug you've found, I didn't notice it. I use gestures, but I always swiped on the app I'm using on split screen to go back in that app anyway 😅 I hope they fix that bug tho

I bought my onePlus open in Thailand 11 months ago , and I have that software around 3 weeks ago or 4 you guys are very late for this update.. I feel my onePlus hotter as well but we are in the summer is normal getting a little bit hotter, but my battery give me a boost around 20-30% % more and I noticed I'm getting more at least 3hours battery with this new update and I run games like emulator PS2 Gran Turismo with 60fps and before was impossible to play with 30fps , amazing update in my case, better battery, and faster GPU but I feel hotter too but I think is because is 32 °C it's summer here. well I checked now and I'm running Indian version , that's why the battery and performance is excellent now .

TL;DR There are TWO problems with the OnePlus software. 1. At 2:39, when Shane starts scrolling the left app, the bar at the top is shown as gray while the right app is showing white. (White is the indicator for the “active” or “focused” app.) At 2:42, when Shane lifts his finger from the screen, the left app becomes active. The phone should have switched focus to the left when it started passing the finger-down and drag-up/down messages to the app on the left. 2. At 2:43, when Shane gestures back from the right side of the screen, the “go back” function request is properly send by OxygenOS to the “active” app, which is the one on the left. However, at the instant when Shane lifts his finger at the conclusion of the back swipe, OxygenOS incorrectly switches the focus back to the app on the right. Background: “Go back” is an OS function, not an app function. It originates outside of any app (sort of from the bezel), just like swiping down from the top or up from the bottom. After receiving the “go back” request, the OS passes it to an app. Google keeps up the illusion that “go back” is happening at the app level by requiring apps to be edge-aligned. Because of that requirement, Google doesn’t have to show which app is “active,” but adding floating windows will be confusing because they wouldn't necessarily have edges aligned with the display. Google also doesn't make it clear where input from a physical keyboard will be directed. Samsung and OnePlus offer more windowing options, so they show which apps are active/inactive with a bar atop the window. The active window is accent-colored on OneUI (white on OxygenOS) while inactive apps show a gray bar. The “go back” function is sent to whichever app is active.

I just tested mine and it works the same as before the update. But, after I updated my Open, I went into my gestures and turned them off and back on just to make sure it works well and I restarted it as well. I have not had any issues so far.

Great video Shane! Fix a bug, create a bug. Pretty typical for all the manufacturers. Hopefully, OnePlus will jump to fixing this sooner rater than later. That said, It doesn't change my use case much nor does it make we want to go back to the Z Fold. The OPO is still more enjoyable then all the other folds I've used. I'm looking forward to testing out the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, aka Pixel Fold 2.

I'm glad they finally fixed the Canadian 5g connection, but yes I can confirm the battery is draining about 20% faster but partly could be due to the 5g, I don't split screen much but can see how the bug can get annoying. It also seems like they threw it into performance mode.

While I get what your saying and for how you use your phone it would make sense for you to be frustrated for me it's the opposite. Usually when I'm going back in a app I'm already in the app I'm focusing on so the back gesture as a button makes sense in my brain. Especially if I'm in open canvus. Also l rarely use the back gesture on the left side so much so I had to turn the sensitivity down so I don't accidentally trigger it. Doing it your way would break my brain way more than it would help for me.

I have always used the navigation icons at the bottom of my screen and have never navigated only by gesture on my android phones. In my case, after installing the very latest update here in the US and following your scenario, when I use the back navigation icon at the bottom right of my screen on the OnePlus Open, the last app I was active with will go back one level. Regardless of how deep I am in the app, and regardless of whether its the app on the left or the right, the last app I touched and did something in, even just scrolling, will obey the back navigation icon at the bottom of the screen. So I am guessing this may be a bug in the pure gesture interface. But my OnePlus Open phone continues to function properly, even when multitasking, with icon navigation which I just so happen to prefer to use. PS - my battery life also does not seem to be affected by the update.

Not exactly related but I love my one plus open.Only problem is it often freezes, and won’t respond to any touch for a short period of time. If I just close it, and go back a minute later everything works again. Has anyone else experience this issue? Thanks in advance for your help.

Yikes no idea why they changed it in the first. I'm good with either way honestly but OnePlus needs to make it consistent so you know what to expect. My OnePlus open was never like the pixel fold. Maybe there was some setting affecting it for me. I always had the back gesture function apply to the app I last touched. I remember there was an update that briefly worked like the pixel but went away randomly. I assumed it was a bug.

I don't think it's a bug. Once you gesture on either side, the phone is going to register a touch on that side. So your next back gesture will be to what's on that side of the phone after the first gesture. I don't personally hate this change. I still love the Open, and Samsung still isn't gaining my business back with their lackluster "apple-like" year-over-year "updating..."

To me, it looks like they tried to copy Samsung gestures and messed it up. Z Folds work the same way, except the gesture doesn't register as a tap that changes focus. Like I laid out here, you can have the swipe be a gesture (in which case it would act on the app you're swiping on) or it can act like a button (in which case it should act on the app in focus and no more effect on subsequent focus than hitting the back button world). They've mixed the two up into an even more confusing mess.

Top and bottom apps for example, the back gesture should just work on the app you're on. Left right doesn't matter. No reason to change how that works on left and right app. Keep it consistent. That's my subjective opinion. OnePlus, oh well, whatever they're doing sounds weird. Lol.

Something else that I have noticed since the update. When a photo is taken and shared directly from the Oneplus camera app to an iPhone. When received on the iPhone it does not show the actual photo, instead the iOS receiver has to click on the sent image in SMS to open. Unlike when a the same occurs from the Galaxy Z Fold 6 to an iPhone shows the photo right away in the SMS message. Quite odd but wondering if anyone else is experiencing this or is there a setting of sorts that I need to adjust in my Oneplus Open? This only affects photos sent from the Oneplus Open camera to an iPhone.

It just makes more sense for the back gesture to work with the app currently being interacted with. I get why the other way is a nice thing to have, but at the same time how often do you truly NEED to go back on the other app if you're currently interacting with a different one?
