G&W is Genesse and Wyoming, a US company that commenced operations in Australia when they acquired Australian National in the late 90's. The BHP Whyalla system was one of the subsequent additions to their Australian operations.

IT surprised the crap out of me the other day, to see an ex-Westrail L class in Pacific National livery, pulling a line of wheat hoppers. Many of the L classes in WA were born narrow gauge, but to see one interstate like this is fairly rare. The L class can be identified, if in orignal form bt a triangular vent on the engine cowling just behind the cab. The most powerful locomtive in Australia when new, they still pull more than their fair share here, and sound great under load

Yeah they may look ugly (the Morrison Knudsen rebuilds), but they sound good. :) The 1300/DE (MKA rebuilds) and the CK class are EMD powered. The 900's are ALCOs

Hi there James.Just reading the info you provided ,im curious as to what your history is with this line or is it through some great research?cheers
@vrfan12 жыл бұрын
No history with the line other than just having a general interest in South Australian narrow gauge. I've got a few books on the line, plus there's the excellent "Peninsula Pioneer" website. (KZbin won't let me post links in the comments, but you can do a Google search on this)

I notice the locomotives have, what appears to be. G&W on them. What is that railroad?
@Romans--bo7br4 жыл бұрын
Gracebeliever077..... G&W is Genesee & Wyoming... and the Orange & black with yellow moniker is also their colors. They are a regional & shortline operator based in the US in Dorien, Connecticut. They owned and operated Many (119) different regional and shortline railroads throughout the US, Canada, Europe, and Australia totaling over 16,000 miles of track. In November 1997 Genesee & Wyoming purchased the South Australian freight operations of Australian National and renamed (rebranded) the operation Australian Southern Railroad. In October of 2000 the Australian Railroad Group, which was a 50/50 joint venture between Genesee & Wyoming and Wesfarmers, were successful in bidding for the Westrail freight business in Western Australia. As part of the joint venture agreement, the ownership of Australian Southern Railroad was passed over to the Australian Railroad Group. In June 2006 the Australian Railroad Group joint venture was broken up with the Western Australian above rail operation sold to QR National and the lower rail infrastructure to Babcock & Brown in a US$974 million (AU$1.55 billion) deal. While that was going on, Wesfarmers sold its 50% share in the South Australian operation back to Genesee & Wyoming Inc. for US$15 million (AU$22 million). The operation was then renamed - Genesee & Wyoming Australia. In June 2010 Genesee & Wyoming, through a subsidiary holding company, paid AU$334 million to acquire the operational rights to and the leasehold of the Tarcoola to Darwin Railway from the Asia Pacific Transport Consortium, and the operational rolling stock of FreightLink. Those 1,400 miles (2,300 km) was the longest single rail line that the company had leased to date. In July 2019, affiliates of GIC Private Ltd. and Brookfield Infrastructure Partners announced they had agreed terms to purchase Genesee & Wyoming for US$8.4 billion. The deal was closed in December 2019. Brookfield already had other rail assets in Australia that would have likely lead to objections from the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission, so G&W's 51% shareholding in Genesee & Wyoming Australia was sold separately and renamed One Rail Australia. I hope that sufficiently answers your question.
