COMPONENTS - The booklets and cards are all good quality and do their job well. They include minis and standees with the game. The minis are tiny (similar to the 7th continent ones), so don't expect to be wowed by them! 0:00 - Introduction 0:56 - World and Story 1:43 - Threat Campaigns 2:47 - Upgrade Paths 3:50 - Action Tests and Cards 4:31 - Card-based Exploration 5:35 - Final Thoughts 5:56 - 7th Citadel vs. 7th Continent

Thanks for the great summary and comparison. I had a blast with 7th Continent and Citadel sounds like a lot of fun in many different ways. Was happy to see an email from Serious Poulp in my inbox today mentioning they had extra production copies for sale. Excited to receive this one so thanks again for the excellent breakdown.

If Arydia can somehow make it to us before the end of the year this will definitely be the best year in board gaming imo

Kings of Ruin also came out recently too. While I’m in alignment with Mike (as I understand it) that it’s not on the level of Agemonia or 7th Citadel, it’s really solid and there are a lot of years where that would have been the best adventure game of the year. 2024 🎉

Also loving 7th Citadel over here! Almost through the first threat. So good although I wish there were more ways for players to get involved in actions together in coop mode. Can't wait to bust out Agemonia, glad to hear the high praise on that. Did you back Arydia as well?? These were the 3 campaign games I was most excited for

A bit of a tough question :) - Would you have a preference and recommendation between 7th Citadel and Roll Player Adventures? Thanks Mike!
@OneStopCoopShop

Oh man, those are two of my favorites, for very different reasons. Roll player has some of the best narrative and branching choices out there, while 7th citadel has that expansive feeling and the amazing exploration… buy em both!!

I'm in the middle of the 1st threat, and I'm loving it so far. The biggest pro for me is that im contrast to 7th continent, you generally have clear objectives and a direction where to head to, so you're not completely lost, which makes for a more focused gameplay.
@OneStopCoopShop
@OneStopCoopShop 9 ай бұрын
Oh absolutely. But I’m sure some people will prefer the more discovery-based continent play. Wandering around and finally finding your goal can be immensely satisfying (or totally frustrating, depending on how long it takes!)
@ptabduction
@ptabduction 9 ай бұрын
This can be a pro and a con, me and my partner do like to explore “on our own”, so fulfilling when you get it right or find what you were looking for after a long time. The fact that we play with several curses at once (7th continent) also changes if direct objectives are given, as in that case we would focus only on one at a time. Right now we can be doing 2/3 curses at once, little here and there, sometimes you can progress on one quest while doing the other by accident.

I love both games but I'm not sure Citadel is objectively better. For example - I actually like Continent's "grind", when you master it you can pretty much survive indefinitely, while Citadel's "timer" is much more merciless and constricting. Also, I disagree Citadel's characters feel "more unique" - not only did Continent offer a much larger cast of characters, they also played very differently, as opposed to Citadel's who are IMO extremely samey. Also, the initially chosen "class" offers very little practical impact, and since gaining Advanced skills has an RNG element, you can't even specialize easily so you always somehow end up with a mishmash of cards with no discernible identity. This doesn't take away too much from the experience just... it's tough to say decidedly that Citadel is an objective improvement on all fronts. :)

@svachalek it’s less about qualifying and more about reminding people that the whole pro/mix/con thing isn’t meant to mean “this game is good for everyone”. Some people watch my reviews and count the number of pro points and use that to determine what they should buy, when what I actually want them to do is ask themselves “did the stuff he said about those 5 points sound good for ME and what I like?

Yeah, you can stop mid-adventure and save your location. That said, since most of the scenarios can be finished in an hour or so, I never needed to use that system.

You spend cards with every action, but you decide how many. Damage can also speed things up, but if you have armor or defense skills you can cancel it. So it varies and you have some control over it.

I don't really know too many modern video games - but I am old school... I would compare 7th Continent to the original "The Legend of Zelda" on the NES - where you are wandering around aimlessly at first - before you find the castle to fight in! 😀 I don't have an old school comparison which I would be familiar with for 7th Citadel, though!

Old school adventure games tended to be all about wandering around and finding your way, like you said. So something like Citadel that gives you more defined goals and objectives didn't really exist in those older games :)
