I also think that Richter and Olrox’s arc reflects the theme of freedom in terms of their psychology. The two of them are imprisoned by their trauma, and are left unable to pursue self actualization without facing that trauma head on. I think this is why Annette is so important, as she subscribed to the method of pushing through the pain and growing from it. I’d also argue that olrox faces his trauma and grows through his relationship with Mizrak, facing the fear of loving someone who’s life is in danger. These characters don’t just have to free themselves from others, they have to learn to be free from their pasts.

Something i look forward to next season is Maria's arc. Not only does she suffer the loss of a parent, she will suffer the need of revenge the way Annette, Alucard and Richter did. Difference being that Annette managed to let go, letting Vaublanc die without malice in her heart. Even as Rash and cock as Richter is, after he manages to regain magic, his bad blood with Olrox didn't entirely unbalance him. But Maria? She is young. She is idealistic, and she sees every one who opposes the revolution as bad. Her arc may lead her to a dark path, a path our previous heroes avoided. This show continues many themes from the first show. 1 ) Not letting the world corrupt you. Trevor regains faith in humanity, while Sypha and Alucard struggles to see the desire to continue fighting. Juste sees no point to be a hero no more, while Richter is still young and has a family to go back to. 2 ) Not letting revenge lead your path. Trevor's was less about commiting vengeance on the people more so indifference. Afterall, they pushed his family out. Dracula hated himself and the people who caused Lisa's death and and decided to put it on every human being, thanks to his already lack of faith in them. Olrox killed Julia because she killed his lover. Richter was too traumatized at first, but obviously he still has bad blood with Olrox. The cycle began with Olrox. A fun nod to this theme is that by killing the Marquis, Richter set his wife to hunt after his family, had he been too late, Tera would have gone. And now Maria, the girl who is on the side of the revolution, but hasn't seen the brutality of it, was betrayed by someone who is not only on the side of Vampires, but is also on opposition with the revolution. Next season we will see her having to learn the same message we had seen previously in the series. But unlike previously seen, Maria might delve deeper

Olrox is an opposite to Dracula, I like that. Dracula didn't turn Lisa and when she died, he took it out on the whole world. Olrox turned his partner against his will, and when Julia killed them, he took it personally. Sad part is, his partner was probably a good person who was fighting for freedom, but was killed simply for being a Vampire. There are probably some good vampire's out there, like Alucard. Yeah they need blood to survive, but they are just like any other creature who need to survive somehow.

Great analysis. The name “Robespierre” echoed in my mind when the Abbott mentioned “Reason” and alluded to the Terror that would come to pass. I find that Nocturne intelligently places itself in this historical period. I also love the rest of your thesis. Really well done, thank you for sharing. Can’t wait for season 2!
@BluntBanana273 ай бұрын
Yeah, I like how this video did a great not to the historical context, especially Robespierre. When I first watched Nocturne, I absolutely hated the Abbot because I saw him as just another fanatical, hypocritical clergyman, and I couldn’t fully understand his motives of allying with someone like Erzsebet. However, after I learned more about the historical context of the French Revolution and where it went wrong, I saw the Abbot differently. The revolution ended up doing more harm than good for the ordinary people and lots of its promised reforms never came into effect. I can now understand a lot more why the Abbot was desperate enough to ally with the vampires. I also began seeing a lot of parallels between him and Robespierre. Both of them were originally idealistic men who truly wanted the best for their people (the Abbot helped Tera when she first arrived in Machecoul when no one else would; Robespierre once wanted to abolish the death penalty and slavery), however the turbulent circumstances and the promise of power and prestige caused them to twist their morals and commit horrible acts. He still absolutely a hypocrite though. The Abbot claims to hate the revolutionary republicans - like Robespierre - that are currently in power, but in reality he’s become just like them, whether he realises it or not. Additionally, Tera is absolutely right when she says, “You’re not doing this for the sake of the church. You’re doing this for the sake of your own vanity,” and this video is also right that Abbot’s position of power blinds him. At the time of the revolution, an abbot or abbess might be paid a salary as well as getting their hands on a personal slice of the abbey or convent’s income, both in cash and in food. Some of this wealth might be distributed to the poor, but a lot would end up inside a habit. Because of the revolution, his power is under threat and also, like the video said, he believes his powerful position makes him the ‘saviour’ these people need and justifies his actions by claiming the people have abandoned God, when most people in France, especially in the Vendée region, where Machecoul is located, were actually very religious and wouldn’t have chosen to abolish Christianity.

I like how castlevania offers philosophical ideas about good and evil. This makes it far more than a just styleful actionpacked animation. I think a lot of evil people think of themselves as strong more so than evil and have to show power because they believe that is what life is all about. Their vision is limited because its shrouded in darkness.
@chroniquephilousophique9983 Жыл бұрын
Yes! The first one articulate a really good alegorie with their depiction of power. With Dracula on a suicidal genocidal murderous revenge on humanity, but still strugling with the idea that his generals needs the blood of humans nonetheless. And with Carmilla, who, even with a wiser approach didnt see she was repeating the same mistake as the same evil figure she was strugling with. Power is different then strengh. Power needs to be feed and fear by others. Strength only need to be.

One thing I hope they do build on next season is Maria’s outlook. She’s got good intentions but her words are indeed careless and don’t account for all on both sides and it doesn’t sit well with me she’s being naive to the repercussions and pain her ideals bring. I’m not saying she shouldn’t fight for the betterment of the revolutionaries. Annnette and Edouard have a better ideology of freedom than her. Just to be aware of the harm it also does for the everyone. To the extreme, look at the Abbot. It’s Maria’s ideals(to the extreme) that influenced members of the church, good and bad, driving him to resort to Devil Forging. At least in part. Maria is going to be hit hard with the loss of her mother so I think it could catalyze her growth into a more mature character.

I loved Nocturne and I'm so happy Netflix has already confirmed season 2! Julia was holding her own against Olrox, she may have still died, but I think Olrox would have been hurt if Richter wasn't there. Erzebet is freeing the vampires from the rising sun but she wants to be worshiped. Forced worship is another form of slavery, the vampires are trading one cage for another - Olrox knows. Amazing analysis! I did think we needed to spend some more downtime with the characters, I didn't feel as connected to everyone as I would have liked. I have a weighty complaint, but, I will not talk about it because the video left me with such a positive feeling that it almost feels rude to mention it!
@hab0272 Жыл бұрын
For the audience it is very clear that Erzebeth is an oppressing force. though she probably genuinely wants to be seen as a hero and liberator for vampirekind.
@BluntBanana273 ай бұрын
Olrox’s history as an indigenous man living in a time of colonialism and indigenous cultures and beliefs are suppressed or bent is very important in why he decides to turn on Erzsebet. It’s why he doesn’t bow to the sight of power. Why he isn’t in adoration of things that are powerful, or elite, or that everyone else will follow. Why gods don’t matter to him. He has seen what happens at the hands of people that they know the answer, that they are powerful, that they are gods, or that god is making them do this. He has a distaste for it. For Olrox, this is the thing that drives him. This is why he feeds on the rich, why he doesn’t bow down just to anyone. Additionally, Olrox definitely seems to dislike Erzsebet on a personal level for her narcissism and her god complex. In the scene where he’s introduced to her, he interrupts Drolta when she’s reciting all of Erzsebet’s various titles. I absolutely love that moment! It’s so funny! He’s like, ‘I am so done with this, can we please just stop.’ He’s disgusted by this show of how powerful she is that she has to have all of these different titles. Cutting Drolta off is a huge sign of disrespect, but he doesn’t care. He can’t actually stomach it. Also, when Olrox says, “I’m flattered for a god to have heard of me,” you can tell there’s a touch of sarcasm in way that he speaks. He doesn’t actually respect her. That, for Olrox, would have to be earned not just given. Through the entire conversation with Erzsebet, Olrox, even though he’s reserved, isn’t able to mask his disgust and his scowl deepens the longer the conversation goes on. Luckily for him however is so self-involved that she doesn’t even notice what he’s doing or not doing. That fact that he would be betraying her, or thinking anything else, or not worshipping her doesn’t even come into play for Erzsebet. She expects it, so much so that she doesn’t question his loyalty as much as Drolta does.

Really happy to finally start seeing actual analysis of the show rather than inane winging about superficial changes that don’t materially affect the quality, themes or story. I also find it interesting that morality and ideals-wise, Richter and Maria kinda begin the series right where Trevor and Sypha had left off in the original. With Trevor growing from cynical loner drunkard into monster Hunter happy to follow the lead of the more idealistic Sypha. Richter starts off exactly like that, happy to just kills monsters and follow Maria and Terra’s ideals, but we are already starting to see glimpses of his morality growing further, beyond simply caring and following those he loves, into crafting his own personal idea of justice, which goes beyond what Trevor had attained at the end of the original series. Similarly, i think Maria starts full of this strong, but rather simplistic black and white idealism that Sypha developed, but as the revolution she supports inevitably becomes more brutal and violent, I expect her idealism will become more tempered and well rounded. Needless to say, I’m really interested to see where the series takes these characters in future seasons.

However, i continue to think that despite the deepness of the thoughts the show his carrying, it was badly delivered. Some highlights you bring needed more time to be convey properly or in a more satisfying dramatic way. That's where the comparison with the first show is infuriating. Of course in 4 seasons Castlevania have touch a lot of subject and philosophical at that, but like all great gifts, it was unpack carefully and thoughtfully. Nocture was busy with too much for eight episodes and, in my opinion, had done a much better service to their ideas if they take their time with it. Ps: Just a thing on the french revolution. It was true that Robespierre give up on his initial thoughts on death penalty and bring much people to the guillotine. But in the context of the rage and murdering spree of the people bring to crazyness by the monarchy's opression, it was a quite political decision by Robespierre to calm the civil war.

Only slightly better than Ratko but no rivalry. 2. The shows Universe treats Christian faith as entirely fake compared to Haitian Faith and Egyptian Gods. It kind means the Belmonts beliefs are secondary or partly fake compared to Annette’s proven Godhood and true faith connection to the afterlife. 3. The shows treats the French Revolution like a fancy backdrop not showing much detail about the divide between the Aristocracy and the poor. Annette’s flashbacks dilutes Colonial Slavery with Magic and the Supernatural, treating that like a superhero origin story and hero’s call to action. Basically, Annette gets both Show & Tell and everyone including Edouard are supporting characters.

Adamic (language Sypha can read) is the language given to Adam/Eve in *THE* Garden of Eden before getting cast out, tower of Babel ETC. Clearly it’s the practitioners not the faith that’s the problem… you know the Catholic Church has done way more fucked up shit than could ever be allowed on the show right? Mass graves from residential schools where the motto was “kill the *nd**n save the child” ring a bell? Witch trials? The Spanish Inquisition (genocide)??? We’re JUST talking about Catholics here too, don’t get me started I could go on! Again, it’s people using the religion as an excuse to do evil (like the Bishop, Sala from Lindenfeld, the Abbott) that are the problem… not the ordinary people (like the holy water minister in Gresit for example) who use their faith to help protect people however they can from actual literal vampiric hellspawn (because Christian Hell also exists in universe, if everything else I listed wasn’t enough canonicity for you there’s that too!)

Lol, of course, you have to wonder if he’d able to find out even with the internet existing. Since more likely than not he’d gravitate to sensasionalist misinformation sites like truth social 😅

The only two black characters are stereotypes... One has bright color gaudy attire placing emphasis on hairstyles and the other is portrayed as an oppressed victim... As a black person, I find that to be insulting af.

Nah. Just binged watch the whole first season of Nocturne and just…nah. Wish I could get that time back. Truthfully, my knowledge of Castlevania is fairly limited, I didn’t even know any characters were race swapped until I started looking at reviews to see if I was just crazy about this show being terrible. Maybe I’m a cynic, but I absolutely hated everyone in the show, the plot, the plot holes, the logic holes, the personalities, the goals, the motivations. The only saving grace were some of the character designs and the fight scenes, that’s it. I don’t hate anyone for enjoying it, but I think I’ll just stick to the first series and be grateful they got it right at least once.

Is it though? Every story has a message. This story is about what things can bind someone, whether it is mental, physical, spiritual or societal, and what it takes to break those bindings to achieve true freedom.

The would it not benefit that message way more and make clear sense if the ones who feel so strongly about these "messages" portrayed them through original characters traversing there own story ? That way they have something authentic, insuring those involved along with the audience, that the so called "message" (obviously all important) is conveyed properly and in line with the core values and themes of the overall narrative ring true into the final product!?! That used to be the respectable ,common sense way to go about sharing/portraying a message, originality was praised and intuitive people everywhere with the determination to create and the will to make it happen conveyed there messages of all kinds in every way imageable. Some still are but not nearly as many as just a few years ago. Now in there place are lazy greedy short minded people who have a seemingly hard time providing themselves with an original message of any kind . Only thing coming out nowadays is literally rebrandings of older better worksbleeding them and milking them into unrecognizable completely different works ruining the original message and forcing this r distraction and purposely inrageing , depressing and divideing all who unwittingly encounter it ,most recently being Castlevania poor thing had a simple but awesome message none the less ,that being good vs evil ,badassary , magic kicks ass , Belmonts don't fuck around and will whip your face off of your head ,and most importantly eradicate, slaughter, and attack vampires!!!... especially Dracula! That immortal powerful bastard is a bastard!!! P.s I'm on drugs , do with that information what you will 🧑🔬

It's an ok animated show, even with the pandering agenda and poor writing. But it's a really shit Castlevania series. I'd have rathered them have called it Vampires of the Gay and done their own thing, than tarnish the Castlevania name even further.
