"Blue" was Onew's solo debut and it was released Dec. 5, 2018, which was less than a week before he enlisted in the military, so he didn't even have any promotional activities for this song or album. Onew officially left for the military Dec.10, 2018, so his Voice (name of the album) was meant to keep us warm in this "Blue" world for the next 18 months, until he was discharged. What a powerful sendoff Onew gave us with this song and MV. (Unfortunately, no live performances of this song yet, because he didn't want to make a big deal about his enlistment, so he just released the album and quietly went off to fulfill his duty.) You are right, "Blue", both as a song and MV, is a masterpiece and it's full of symbolism. Not only does it tell the story of everything Onew and SHINee went through over the past few years, but it also is a sort of goodbye song to all the fans and a song to show how much Shawols' support has meant to Onew and how the fans are what gives him strength, etc. As you know, SHINee are known for their vocals, and as an SM Entertainment artist it is no surprise that Onew is shocking you with his voice. How I interpret the story in the MV is it's all about the struggles Onew has gone through over the years and how he is searching for a "sense of belonging". As you know, SHINee's official symbol is a diamond, and that's the official symbol for this song and album -- a diamond with 5 faces. And, if you hold SHINee's lightstick up to a solid surface you will see the reflection the diamond makes is a five point star, with each point representing one of the members. As you also know, SHINee's fan color is pearl aqua blue/green. So the blue light he refers to in the lyrics is talking about SHINee's blue light that represents the fans and the members and everything to do with them as a group. Hence the multiple meanings of the title of the song, "Blue." In the MV, in the beginning you see the diamond sitting on a pedestal and it is being reflected in 5 mirrors, however, one of the mirrors is cloudy or covered in dust, which probably represents Jonghyun and the fact that even though he is not with us anymore, he is still part of everything SHINee does and he is still very important to Onew. The way I see it, the blindfolded people represent Onew's scandals and how the public is judging him. They are judging him blindly, without actually seeing him, and don't even care about the truth. About a year before this, in 2017, Onew was involved in a sexual harassment scandal where he was accused of groping a girl at a nightclub when he was drunk. The story that was told is that he was extremely drunk, to the point where he couldn't even stand without help, and while trying to stand he grabbed the girl's leg. She eventually dropped the charges, but the police still investigated. Onew spent several months in seclusion, out of the public eye during the investigation and it wasn't clear whether the Korean public would ever forgive him or allow him to come back. However, he was eventually cleared of all charges, etc. And just when it looked as though SHINee would be able to get back to normal activities again, it wasn't long after that that Jonghyun died. And just to put it all into context, Onew's birthday is Dec.14 and Minho's birthday is Dec. 9 -- Jonghyun died Dec. 18, 2017. So, as you can see, a lot happened in the span of 2 years. "Blue" reflects on all of that. There are 3 fish floating in a protective glass bubble which I see as representing the 3 remaining members -- Minho, Key and Taemin -- which Onew feels like he needs to protect as the leader and oldest of the group. The white rose is also in a box, and some say it represents the fans -- and possibly Jonghyun -- and how by putting them in a protective case Onew is saying how precious the fans (and Jonghyun) are to him and how he wants to protect them. The shooting star, represents many things -- his family, his members and fans, etc. -- that are guiding him back home, after his scandal were he lived isolated. It was almost as if he was saying he was trying to follow the star's path but then something happened that derailed him and made him lose his way -- probably Jonghyun's incident -- and for a while he was no longer able to see his "home" from afar anymore. His expression is sort of shocked and afraid, and then he sees the same people that judged him once again looking at him, but more intensely, which was represented by the fact that the blindfolded people grew and became more menacing as things started to pileup. It was almost as if they were judging him, like they were blaming him for everything that happened. And that is probably how he felt all along. But then you see the shooting star make a path directly to where he was standing, which lit up his path and allowed him to see again. The star also provided light to the diamond once again, which helped Onew finally find his way back home. Back to a place where he is starting to feel safe, accepted and loved once again. He put the diamond on the table, and in its reflection there was shown 5 diamonds. If you notice one of them is blurry ... but even though you can't see all 5 of them clearly anymore, they are still 5. I also see the fact that in the end when he puts the diamond back on the pedestal it's almost as if he is saying he is putting the fans and his members and everyone that is precious to him, etc. on a shelf for safe keeping while he is away in the military and he will be back for us once again when he comes back. I think in the end what he is saying is that he has finally accepted everything and is starting to come to terms with it all. However, he is still not 100% OK or happy yet, but he is slowly getting there. It's the power of the light that is produced by the "diamond" -- which represents the power from the fans -- that has helped him to find his place in this "Blue" world and to come to terms with everything. That's just a little bit of what I took away from this MV, but I know there is so much more that can be discovered from it and so much more meaning behind every detail. We could probably go on for days analyzing everything and come up with multiple meanings for it all. :D Onew did pretty well with this song and album, he received some pretty good feedback for his first release from his solo debut, and we wouldn't expect anything less from a member of SHINee. :D I am so proud of him!! Onew topped iTunes charts in 28 countries, topped the world charts and was No. 1 in the U.S. with this album all soon after release -- and that was without any promotions. :D

SHINee really is a bunch of all rounders.. and to add how each of them have their own vibe and own sound.. like each of their solo stuff are so diverse.. and when they get together as SHINee it even becomes more colorful. Their synergy is just amazing. They are like 5 solo artists with their own styles but when they get together as SHINee they just compliment esch other so well.

At the time that "Blue" came out, Onew was about to enlist in the military but I think what was on most of our minds was the fact that the first anniversary of Jonghyun's death was also coming up that month. I think Onew put all his emotions and grief from the past year into the song, which is why you can feel its meaning deep into your soul. I get chills every time I listen to it. Also no one else has mentioned it, but the chorus has the lyrics "pureun bam", Blue Night in English, which was the name of the radio show that Jonghyun hosted for a few years from midnight to 2 am. On his radio Jonghyun would play comforting songs for listeners and even composed some songs based on their stories (which you can find in his Story Op 1 and Story Op 2 albums). He would also give advice/comfort to people who were struggling and he also talked about his own struggles (like depression). To me blue night is that time of the night, or a time period in your life, when you feel alone, depressed, and trapped. That's why having it in the chorus has so much meaning to me. I don't mean to talk so much about Jonghyun on a video about Onew, but I do feel like "Blue" had a lot to do with Jonghyun and coping with his death. Onew also has a song called "Shine on You" on the same album that shawols believe was written for/about Jonghyun, if you ever want to check it out. “Blue” gives me chills every single time. It’s beyond stunning. “Dice” is so freaking fun and really screams Jinki to me. lol. You definitely should watch him perform “Dice” live-he proves every time his mic is HOT, despite being on the music shows where they’re notorious for pre-recording live vocals and lip synching for the performance. There's a lot of symbolism in the "Blue" MV for shawols. Blue obviously has lots of meanings as a color, but also pearl aqua is the official color of SHINee, so the idea of a blue ocean has added meaning there. Diamond is also a symbol for shinee and we see it reflected by five mirrors. No one knows the exact meanings of all the things in the video, but it's theorized that the fish and the rose might symbolize other members. I personally like the symbolism of the large people with blindfolds, it looks like they are judging him but they are blind, so how could they see everything to judge the whole situation? I think these represent people who speculate on celebrities' lives, because it's really impossible to know what's going on unless we are in their shoes. Then lastly, we see the light come back from the blue/pearl aqua sky and I think that represents the fans giving Onew energy to keep going. The whole name SHINee has the ending "ee" like the opposite of "er" so instead of "shiner" meaning someone who shines, it's "shinee" meaning someone who is receiving light.

Yayyy!! Finally!! Thanks for reacting to this king! Blue came out in his Voice album as a gift to fans just days before he enlisted in the military. Voice is very sad ballad heavy but also very beautiful. Almost 3.5 years later, he came out with Dice and wanted to show that he can be diverse and can do not just ballads. I appreciate what you said about him being a dancer too, he had said during the Atlantis release that he should do a dance because he's SHINee too. People sleep on his dancing like how people sleep on Minho's vocals. SHINee is full of talented men who can do almost anything and everything that they do get kind of overshadowed by the other members when really they could be main dancer, main vocalist, visual, etc in other groups. They just released his dance practice for Dice if you want to check that out! He also has live stages of Dice and one of the B sides called On the Way if you want to watch those as well! Hoping we can finally get him his first music show solo award.

I first found shinee through Taemin a year or so ago. I put on their Spotify mix playlist while working just to get feel for the groups music. Blue came on and I started crying. His voice is so mesmerizing and beautiful. I don’t understand Korean but I felt that song. One of my favorite songs of all time.

How I interpret the story in Onew's "Dice" MV and song is that every time Onew rolled the dice his fate changed. That is why you saw him changing his look every time he tossed the dice. Throughout the MV Onew tosses the dice thinking he needs to change his fate in order to find the girl and rescue her. However, in the end, when she steps out of the elevator, you see she also has a dice, which means she also is in control of her own fate. You discover she rolled the dice in order to defeat the monsters and to allow her to meet Onew. I interpret the song and MV to be about taking control of your own fate, and if you don't like the circumstances you are in at the moment, just roll the dice and change things. You don't have to continue to be stuck in the situation you are in if you actively work to change it. At one point you see a monster with a smashed dice in his hand, which I think is supposed to symbolize how the monsters, or bad things in your life, don't have control of your fate. If you don't give those bad people and things control of your life, you will always have a say in how your dice is rolled and where your fate takes you. They literally just released his dance practice video for "Dice" earlier today. And in true SHINee style, it is fire. You should check it out. :D

All his songs are great. He also sang I one of the Shinee concerts an opera song Nessum Dorma. He also sang in a tv show called Sea of Hope with other singers by the beach. A lot of the songs were covers not all. He sang Lucky from Jason Mraz with Rose’ from Blackpink.( recommend) He also does OST’s. Love Onew/Jinki’s voice. ❤️

There is no definitive answer of what Blue is about To me This song is about the cycle of grief. And it absolutely wrecks me every time I hear it. Waking up and seeing a comet One diamond reflecting in 4 mirrors with no light. A balloon in limbo with 4 white Betas possibly the SHINee members. A single white Rose in a box never to age. White is the color of mourning, people blind to their own grief. With holes in their hearts It’s like he’s looking in from the outside until he sees himself and sees that he is grieving too... suddenly realizing the world is watching him. And a light falls from the heavens lighting the diamond again... Back to the home putting the diamond back in the stand shining it’s light in all 4 mirrors.. Turning and seeing the comet again... starting the cycle again. “In this silent moment I feel everything about me. I understand the joy of loneliness”

Dice was a change up from Jinki's ballad style Voice Album. He wanted challenge himself, show diversity and range in the songs he can deliver and not just be seen as a ballad/OST vocalist...even though he smashes that ..I think On The Way from the Dice album really showcases his vocal control..It's vocal gymnastics lol..but Dice is a perfect title track. I love the MV it's quirky and represents the lyrics in a fun and interesting way..and it's very Jinki.. All members of SHINee do say whatever genre, solo or as a group, there's always a SHINee-ness to it. Blue is beautiful and Onew's voice is amazing but it's not my favourite. I prefer Sign and Shine On You from the Voice album..I'm loving his new vibe, kinda new wave funk sound and the whole album is amazing...but it's difficult to appreciate fully on the first listen (apart from possibly Sunshine) as there's so much going on production and vocal wise but when you re-listen you get all the nuances and vocal skills ...I'm totally in love with it and really proud for Jinki that he's stepped away from expectations and challenged him with this. Shine on Ontokki. I'll post the eng translation of Blue as a reply in case you haven't already seen them..the MV is kinda a direct visual representation of the lyrics.

Shinee is an insane group of people and collection of talents, because Onew IS the weak link for dancing in shinee. Like, that's objectively how it is, he is the worst dancer in shinee. But in no world does that mean he isn't an _insanely_ good dancer, in any other group, lead if not main dancer material, he's just stuck competing with and getting compared to Taemin and Key. Same for Minho and his voice, again, he is objectively the weak link in the vocal line-up, but he too is an _insanely good_ singer, he's just up against Onew and Jonghyun, arguably the two best voices in kpop. SHINee is just SO MEAN to the rest of SHINee. And we are all the more blessed for it.

I can't even watch the BLUE MV without getting emotional. His voice is so hypnotizing and just beautiful. I agree with you on your comments about DICE. Blue was a song written by an artist that lost his ability to sing after his voice surgery Onew went through that some voice surgery and was able to sing again. You should check out the live version it truly brings you to tears. It was the first time singing after the surgery and he was afraid his voice would give out.
