Correction about VRR range on Ally - its panel uses LFC for lower FPS (29-48 or something like that). LFC allows FreeSync technology to work when the framerate falls below the minimum refresh rate of the display. so it is still smoothing things out even at low FPS.

My only problem is that OneX has a poor history of customer service from what I can find when something goes wrong. It has really good specs, but it's too easy to become an expensive paper weight considering your chances at support. That's why I went with Valve's steamdeck because I decided with the games I want to play portably I didn't need the extra power and if something goes wrong (and something did for me) I can get good support (which I did) and replacement parts.

And that's probably why the Steam Deck stays the undisputed king of handhelds for the masses. It's basically unbeatable performance + battery life + value on the entry level 64gb model costing $400 USD new or even $319 refurbished by Valve. Its crazy/ Yes, there are more POWERFUL handhelds out there, but none hit the same sweet spot compromise between performance + battery + price. They are either near double the price, or eat through battery within an hour due to the insane chipset. We REALLY need more steam deck competitors in the sub $500 price range with equal or better performance or battery life. Anything more expensive than that are just tech demos that will be ignored by the masses.

A thing with thunderbolt. You need to have a 0.5m cable, increasing above 1m will make it take a big hit so just stick with 0.5m and take no hit jic, also with any of these hand helds YOU NEED 32gb of VRAM for any modern games. Windows alone will consume 6-8gb as a base but modern games require up to 8gb. Now with that 32gb is the sweet spot it gives you the ability to max out the chips VRAM to 8gb and run a lot better. With the thunderbolt too you can update the usb 4(v1) driver also you gotta also plug it in and run it at max wattage (disabling most of the vram). ALSO disabling the integrated graphics in device manager for some reason does help with this. (With nvidia GPUs - Better for this - you can disable the integrated GPU once detected and plugged in).

Would I be able to squeeze more frames out of more graphically demanding games than the Ally? As impressive as these are, all these +$700-$1000 USD handhelds are just making me appreciate the Steam Deck's insane price-to-performance value at $400 USD new (and now $319 USD refurbished officially by Valve). Currently the ally does regulate the tdp. So if you set up the tdp at 25 and you play blasphemous it will got down to 7w... Seems you are not up to date.
@RetroGameCorps Жыл бұрын
It’s a nuanced subject but it depends on the game and its power demands. The same phenomena would happen with Blasphemous and other handhelds, that’s not something unique to the Ally or any sort of TDP regulation, the game just won’t take more power than it needs. A better game to test would be Hades, which will often eat up more power than it requires. Currently only SteamOS or third party tools like Handheld Companion (with AutoTDP enabled) will regulate the power profile to match specific fps goals. The Ally can also set fps limits but then it just adds a cap to the top, which isn’t the same as regulating its power profile on the fly.
@yusepbcn Жыл бұрын
@@RetroGameCorps what I meant is that currently you don't need to setup a specific tdp for the Apu, because it regulates to what the game needs under a certain workload. It was not like that at the start, but recent changes have improved the ally tdp self regulation. Honestly, try it. I was playing murder by numbers at a 25w turbo, but the ally was automatically lowering it to 4-5. It was not like that at the launch. You can check that at my last video, las minutes. 720p (and depending on the game 30fps) has always been fine for PORTABLES. Nintendo was frequently criticized for their console horsepower post Gamecube and for not updating the Switch so deep into it's lifecycle. Its about weight in the hand. If you want another 50whr just carry an external battery or mount one to the back

The things that make the Ally that make it a non starter for me is the SD card being unusable and for some stupid reason it has a 2230 m.2 I really wanted the Ayaneo Kun but i cant justify north of £1000, especially when the oneXfly is the same price as the ally and I've had nothing but good experiences with onexplayer.
