Ongewenste Vreemdeling (Unwelcome Stranger) was the film adaptation of a radio serial from the early 1970s.
However, Rautenbach transformed it, incorporating many of the themes from his earlier avant-garde "Jannie Totsiens" - a stranger entering a closed community, an unrequited love triangle, the juxtaposition of sex and death and the theme of running from something inside yourself.
The result is a film of great lyrical beauty, shot in elegant long takes. It contains one of the most famous film sequences in Afrikaans: the dance/suicide scene set to the "Song of the unwelcome stranger"
