Worth to note that the original didn't look this bad on a CRT. Otherwise this "remaster" looks only a touch better than the emulated version (with increased internal resolution ofc). I would be more concerned with different music, while not including the added content from xbox version (genma warlords edition).

I'm buying this! I remember playing all of the onimusha games my freshman year in high school. Capcom by far is one of the BEST devs with a proven track record! Hopefully if the game does good they will make a new one for next gen, I can only imagine the potential.

Yeah. I remember being terrible at this game. Now that I play it, I find it enjoyable. I played the first one on ps2 (and just the ps2 lol) so when this released on the ps4, I was excited. Even if they only sharpened the textures, it's still a great game/series and it's difficult to improve off those types of games.

Highschool? I remember when they first came out, I would watch my dad play them and occasionally he would let me play if he couldn’t beat something and wanted a break. I miss those days; Onimusha, Devil May Cry, the original Spyro,God of War. I would sit and watch him play for hours and I would look up and print out dozens of pages of walkthroughs and read through them to help him when he got stuck. He’s pretty much given up on life nowadays and just drinks and smokes all day. I’ve tried to get him to play the new God of War so we could relive those moments a bit before he inevitably drinks himself to death but he just won’t for some reason. I miss the old days.

Quite obvious they took the uncompressed final renders and scaled them up + sharpened, dehaze, clarify etc. Not re-renders (which would be a lot more work). Not complaining, I wasn't expecting more. But also saying it's pretty much just bare minimum amount of work put into it. Feels more more similar to a port than a remaster. This is why pure 3D remastered games are usually easier to remaster as you can gain more through the upscaling, although the 2D assets of textures are still subject to the same as above.

they added other things. modernized controls. some quality of life options, re recorded va and bgm in addition to the artwork being (as I understand it) re exported and the fmv scaled. Remaster fits the bill I'd say.

Even though capcom has done minimal work here, except redone soundtrack, voice acting. This re-release NEEDS TO SELL WELL!! so we get more onimusha, Capcom clearly dosen't want to put the effort in if there's no market for these games anymore. I'm gonna buy this on steam even though It could of been better, it could of had the great enchanments from the xbox version but alas I will support it. and you all do the same pretty please! don't ruin the lovely rebirth of onimsuha.

I love Onimusha, but this is a pretty bad remaster. Take an example of CoD Modern Warfare or Shadow Of The Colossus. Or make a proper and complete remake like Resident Evil II. I think they put that game on the market just to see if there are still enough fans or possible buyers of an bigger remaster. Seeing Capcom putting huge effort and work into the best possible remake I've seen to that point with Resident Evil 2, I can just assume that Capcom is looking forward to remaster their classic games if there are enough possible buyers. If there would be an better remake of the Onimusha series I wouldn't hesitate to get a copy of that beatiful and nostalgic game.

Pretty solid looking remaster, nothing fancy but the upscaled (or assuming and hoping it's actually the native artwork's resolution) pre-rendered backgrounds is good and overall higher res for the 3D models is clean and nice looking.

Cheapest remaster I've seen in a while. Those pre-rendered backgrounds don't hold up no matter how much photoshop they used. They should have redone them in real time even if the camera would remained fixed. Lazy af.

Redoing this the way you are suggesting is called a remake, not a remaster. A remaster is literally just upping the res, using the same old assets for the most part or entirely. In other words, just what they have done here. It's not lazy, it's what a remaster is by definition. If you're going to build the game from the ground up using all new assets, that's called a remake. A remake is basically a brand new game based on the old one to varying degrees. If it changes too much, then that is what is known as a reimagining.

Just found out this remaster existed, and I think I'd have to agree with comments saying that the PS2 version on an emulator would probably look the same (or close enough...definitely not the improvement you saw in the remake of the Crash & Spyro games where they actually remade the renders). This looks like all of the PS3 "HD" releases that you barely notice the difference while playing (2D graphics & logos are stretched looking, on the emulator, but when you're deep in play, it's not a big deal. The 3D elements look fine, properly scaled to 1080p).

Love to know how you got such a beautiful background on it. My ps4 looks worse than the Ps2 version for the background/ environments. The characters and enemies are the only thing that has graphically improved on the ps4

The background looks so good - even on PS2 - because it wasn't rendered in running time. The backgrounds are 2D prerendered images.

I think I prefer the original oddly enough. The artwork looks horrible at a higher res, and my mind does a better job of filling in detail than an actual higher resolution does in this title. Doesn't help that the shadow maps look wonky in the remaster. Also, is the PS2 captured from composite video? The quality looks worse than it should, but maybe the game just looks worse than I remember.

I am hugely disappointed...When it comes to Onimusha, I didn't want remasters (same graphics just in 1080p/60fps, 4K/60fps or whatever). I wanted a "Remake" like they did with the "Resident Evil 2 Remake". Onimusha is way too old and it's graphics simply look awful and watching them in HD only makes them look worst in my opinion. Literally, their faces look way worst in HD, the only good thing is the anti-aliasing and the fact that now they allow the players to use the left analog stick to move the character (something that they should have done since the beginning perhaps?!)...Like, seriously, I would never play this game unless it was for nostalgic reasons. So if they're going to bring Onimusha 2 & 3 back to life, I hope they make actual REMAKES of those two (number 2 was my favourite).

ummm... why comparing remaster to PS2 version while Onimusha Warlord did get a PC release back in 2003? Yes, it was only for CHN region, but you can change language to english from game setting. I'm really curious the difference between 2003 PC release with 2019 aside from the very obvious widescreen support for 2019 release. I did take a quick look and I can hardly see difference. :?

Several things went wrong in the making of the ps4 Remaster the combat is the same yes the music not so much. this game is supposed to be an action thriller type game and switching the music just made the ps4 version a lot worse for me. you don't get that "Nostalgic" feeling like you felt in the original all you hear/feel is that crippled Beethoven music the original in my opinion definitely outclasses the remastered seeing that people still play this game makes me joyful and makes my heart churn but I mean SERIOUSLY this is one of the worst remastered games I have ever seen the trailer for it is hot garbage and that's saying something. it's overall nothing like the original OR like Genma Onimusha for that matter. even the main menu was tampered with! they changed it. the original main menu just feels more Normal to me it feels more Nostalgic and most of all it gives me the feeling that I am addicted that I want to play this game over and over and over because this game is a chad it had a gorgeous story and I loved ever part of it. I grew up with this game the classic the original. the ps4 version should be sued for it's bad quality it's just that bad if you look into the original Onimusha Warlords soundtrack you'll know what I mean. it honestly pains me even knowing no even THINKING that children of this era this major modern age is growing up playing the ps4 version of this beautifully gifted game it is the absolute gem of all ps2 games in my opinion and they just went ahead and ruined one of my most favorite games of all time?! the ps2 version Is best for anyone who invests and is interested in the Onimusha series I highly recommend the ps2 version because this disgrace of a remaster does not deserve to be in copies let alone in stores Genma Onimusha was awesome except for the fucking dolls going through a psychosis throughout the entire game I really hated that part but GO and the Original definitely rock the house what I can see based of the remastered version is the graphics are somewhat likable (is what I'd like to say) no..... they are not likable they are absolutely horrible. developers were lazy and did not put in any ideas in the remastered whatsoever I mean you have to be just born yesterday to actual like the remastered version.

Exactly. I was wondering how they would pull out 16:9 for a game with rendered backgrounds like the first 3 resident evils or final fantasy 7, the answer is the same they did for all Dragon Ball and One Piece released on Blu-ray, just crop it. Sadly those original assets are not available anymore, or maybe it's just too expensive to draw the rest of the screen and update the dimension of the game play field to support that.
