*“Sebum”* - that’s the name of the oil produced by glands on your skin (including hands). It’s something I’ve become increasingly aware of as I dive deeper into my obsession with paper, and I wish more paper reviews included it as a qualitative factor - anyway, thanks for mentioning that. I ended up getting a glove (from jetpens) which covers my bottom couple fingers, palm, and part of my wrist. it’s great for longer writing sessions, protecting the page from sebum & smudging :)

Artists tip, you can also tear a small piece of paper and rest it between your hand on the page. It's how we keep graphite from smudging, but also works to keep oil off the page.

I love these journals and I hope they'll be a huge success, because variety in paper is so important to me as an artist and someone who just likes to write with fountain pens. Thank you for doing this very practical review. I was especially impressed by the little amount of bleedthrough and how nicely the colors of the inks came out.

I had forgotten about onion skin. In my early calligraphy days back in the 80's, we used it. My go-to paper for fountain pens has been Rhodia and Stalogy, so I appreciate the comparison of other papers, too.

Onion skin is a lovely paper. It’d be nice to see the pad and journal come with a sheet of blotting paper

I always loved onion-skin or airmail paper - Brings back great memories. I found Sodaxx translucent vellum. It's 75 sheets for $8.

The now hard to find Esleeck onion paper is heavenly more smoother than even my 52gsm Tomoe River, I love the Esleeck. The Tomoe though if you look through a magnifying glass has sharper line edges but I still truly prefer the smoothness of the Esleeck onion paper made even smoother if you smoothen your nib with , the only one that can trump it when it comes to smoothness is photo paper. Onion Skin paper would make excellent tracing paper! Does it wrinkle (crinkle up?) significantly after applying a wet ink? That could be interesting when writing letters, but it would distort any image that had been traced.

I love this paper, and use it to send letters to my penpals. It gets very crinkly with a B nib, or stub nib so I would guess that it would be quite crinkly if it got wet all over (like with watercolours).

Ooh! The paper seems to not absorb ink much, which can be interesting. I'd probably stick to using very fine nibs on it.

I appreciate that you don't use the terms "pages" and "sheets" interchangeably the way some people do (one sheet = two pages). By the way, as someone who retired from the printing industry after 40 years, everyone I dealt with in the industry always referred to it as smyth sewn, not smith sewn, but in any case I knew what you meant.

isn't that basically the paper that animators use? funnily enough, the potentially dangerous cellulose synonymous with fountain pen is also possible to be made into clearer cel paper. we really are going full circle

Woodpulp isn't dangerous; all plants are composed of cellulose. Cellulose is a component of celluloid. The material animators use is usually a mylar or paper vellum, or if using tissue, which architects and draftspeople also use, in the industry it's called "bumwad."

@@jacobus57 I meant to say celluloid and other processed stuff using cellulose(or maybe not/different from wood pulp cellulose?) like nitrocellulose, old films that are combustible, etc., but good to know what you said, it's old things that just aren't never really common knowledge.

Interesting paper! I wonder how it can be so different from the other onion skin papers you tried and didn't like. That would mean that not all onion skin papers are the same. 🤔

Thanks for the review. I have used this paper years ago. It is fine for ballpoint pens but for fountain pen ink, I would have to pass, being left-handed and an overwrites.

Oh boy this seems to be not be for me. Even with normal paper i sometimes have a big issue with being extremely oily I kinda don't wanna try how this paper would work with me.

Curious as to how ‘onion skin’ paper differs from regular paper?(do have preference for lighter papers like Basildon Bond airmail and tomoe river 52gsm, so suspect this would be right up my street!:); thanks for this

It's the weight and translucency. This doesn't look like traditional onion skin, which is "crunchy" like onion skin but not fragile.
