I had no problem switching to the "writing" 12 v output. However, if my 616 is plugged into AC power, the fan is now constantly on. I find it too noisy as well. If I unplug from AC, of course I shut down the stand by feature, and can't use the remote to power up on demand. My questions are, how do I find out why the fan outlet wasn't working or did my 616 never get hot enough to kick in the cooling fan, that I personally find too loud. I've watched a couple of hacks to install a speed controller to the circuit but it's shown in at least three different configurations. Recommendations?

I have found that switching the HDMI through OFF then it doesn't stay on when switched off hope this works for you.

@@hudsonrobert49 I must tell you, I just got this from a guy who was going wireless and small. He sold it to me for $20 because he couldn't restart it after boxing it up a few months ago. I don't know how I got it going other than I disconnected the black HDMI cord, swapped it around for a tighter fit on the board it plugs into, kept pushing buttons till it finally switched on. This was before I opened the remote, cleaned the contact button insert and wiped down and scrubbed the 'board' and battery contacts. Needless to say, I have not connected this to a video screen, and therefore have no idea about the set up menu or the types of customization I can put in place. So Rob, is this where you go to first shut off the HDMI like you say in your response? I don't see a remote control button that is labeled in a way that suggests it could shut down that 12volt power. I do have a PDF of the manual but I'm too lazy to scroll through it this morning. Someday though. Thanks man.

KZbin won't let me load a slide show of my phone pictures, I could post to another audio site that you follow or should I just take a phone video and post that? I wouldn't be able to show all the details but I know you would be able to get the idea okay. I'm having no problems starting and stopping the 616 any more since keeping standby on and the temperature very consistent with the fan, which now I don't hear at all.

I wanted to add my thanks for your very helpful video. I just encountered a scary "auto shutdown" of my Onkyo 616 from what I could tell as overheating with no fan spinning. I'm not sure what caused the fan to no longer work under heat load as it used to, but now I have a permanent fix. If the fan even gets too loud or a bearing goes, I'll probably replace with a comparable Noctua PC case fan in the future. Thank you again, the connector was exactly the same and I was able to slide the casing off without having to unplug everything from the receiver... somehow.

I moved the fan connector on my NR626 to the same place you did Robert. But the 12v connector was smaller. The pin spacing was the same so I just broke the tiny weak walls off of the connector. The fan connector just barely fit. It spins very quietly. The 626 runs stone cold now !! Not any heat to be found around the outside of the receiver !! Thanks for the tip Robert !!

Hey thanks for posting this. I had to shave my connector a bit for it to fit, but it works. One of the transistors burned before and I had to repair it. Hopefully that won't happen again.

TURN OFF THE POWER before opening a receiver! And DO NOT touch any of the components - capacitors have a lethal discharge even when the unit of powered off! Also try not to carry or move the receiver when the lid if off. The chassis is poorly designed causing the boards to move and cause problems - or at least cause the HDMI's to fail. I added a fan from a TX-SR608 (that had the HDMI failure) to the inside of a TX-NR515 using the 'writing' 12v port and its working great. The connector fits straight in. There is also a dedicated fan 12v - but I dont trust it firing up the fan early enough.. The NR515 has the indentations on front fascia to accommodate the fan cage - - but the back chassis has no screw holes to fasten the back of the fan cage. I was against drilling new holes as of the metal filings that could cause a potential disaster. I used a good blob of hot glue instead which holds fantastically well. The unit is running cool and the fan is super quiet. Im amazed the TX-NR515 has no fan on shipping- after all, the ports are available and the front fascia has been built with a fan in mind. Penny pinching I imagine.

The question is, why my fan in TX-NR828 wont kick in, when plugged to the right power socket? Will try to heat the thermostat with hairdryer to check if fan will kick in.

It will turn on after the right thermal value is reached, it's common to act this way because no one wants to hear the fan when idling or not pushing the AMP on these equipments.
